Get a mac mini instead
>>

Depends on what you do in a daily basis. Shit post and gaming maybe some streaming but I don't expect it to outperform an actual set up
>>
>>738634775
to play undemanding games, sure
>>
you can probably install windows on it, so i guess it should do daily stuff fine. for video games it's entry level machine, wouldn't have my expectations too high
>>
doubt it. the steam machine is meant for games so the CPU probably isnt configured to process word or email.
>>
>>738635543
It's literally running a Linux fork and you can install another OS on it if you want to, this was literally touted as a feature of it.
>>
>>738635637
that doesnt make sense, its valve's game console. does it play games or not?
>>
>>738635725
It's a prebuilt PC by a major gaming storefront that have a very strong interest in making a prebuilt PC that doesn't suck dick. Not a console.

So yes, it plays games, and you can turn it into a Windows or Mint or Ubuntu or whatever the fuck driver.
>>
>>738635018
No gaems
>>738634775
It'll be fine. You could partition it and install microslop windows. Or you can install any old Linux distro if you find the immutable nature of Steam OS too limited for your tinkering and software

But you'll probably not need to do either.

What applications do you want to use that you consider necessary for "daily PC"?

It's a moderately okay PC
If you built a midrange or higher computer in the last five years you already have one better than it
It also almost exactly matches the performance of the base model PS5/Xbox Series X
>>
>>738635838
so if its a PC why is it being compared to PS5? sounds like a console to me. I guess some consoles like ps2 and ps3 had linux on them so this is a lot like a playstation.
not sure why you think it's a computer, but okay, to each their own.
>>

>2.01%
>>
>>738636352
it's a PC that can optionally be treated like a console, which is the entire selling point.
>>
>>738636352
Because when you first turn it on it probably boots right into steam in controller mode and if you never do anything else with it will be like a little steam box hooked up to your TV for couch gaming.

It will be brainless like a console and clearly that is appealling to many.
>>
>>738636352
For normalfags and retards is a console, for someone with more than two brain cells is just an overpriced cube shaped PC.
>>
>>738636524
yeah, so like i said its a console. if it doesnt have a keyboard and mouse bundled its a console, not a computer.
>>738636504
i think you have it backwards anon. it seems to me that its a console that can optionally be treated like a computer.

Quintessential pick for people who fucking hate video games

It can be whatever you want it to be. By default it mimics a console.

No, Big Picture Mode is a very thin emulation of a console, if you toggle it off you're in a default KDE desktop.
Like the anon above you said, normalfags will never leave BPM besides to maybe install emulators.

Windows recently stated that 32gb is the new normal so no i guess
>>
>>738636808
I'm not talking about big picture mode, even a computer can do that, I'm talking about steam's actual OS they created for the steam machine which only runs a specialized version of steam for the os
>>
>>738634775
Yeah.
I got a PC 6 times more powerful than this and all I do is shitpost here on 4chang.org and browse twitter. I wish I didn't spend all this money.
>>
>>738636958
SteamOS is a complete Arch-based OS. Everything you need is there.
>>
>>738634775
It would actually be a upgrade for me so if it's a good price I'll pick it up.
>>
Everyone is missing the point of this. It gives developers a target system to optimize for. Having it low shitty specs benefits everyone.
>>
>>738637109
no idea what arch is, but yeah it has everything I need. I own two steam decks so I'm pretty familiar with steam's os.
when I get the steam machine, it'll be the same thing. I turn it on, and all of my games are right there, just like a console. I don't get why those other anons are over complicating things. valve is in the game business, they have no reason to build a computer.
>>
>>738637340
Arch is a linux distribution. It's well supported.
>>
>As an office PC
Yes.
>>
>>738637325
>shit specs didn't exist before
damn thank you Gabe
>>
>>738637628
Of course they did but they were never standardized. Devs have an incentive to get the "works on steambox" badge.

Steam cube has better hardware than 70% of steam users, for me personally that would be a huge upgrade for me, high-end builds is very niche, I'm excited since I to get away from Sony ever since they increase there PS plus price and release hardly anything exciting to play.
>>
>>738634775
Just get a Mac mini if you need a pc there isn't anything better
