Just tried playing Deus ex for the first time and holy shit its genuinely so insufferable and unfun. It doesnt stand the test of time at all. The combat is frustrating chance-based bullshit, and the stealth is incredibly boring and bland. There is no way anybody enjoys this game for any other reason than for pure nostalgia.
>>
>>738649556
Do you have a single fact to back that up?
>>
>>738649614
Is this some shitty quote from the game?
>>
>>738649556
It was pretty shit in terms of gameplay when it game out if you don't do stealth

Stealth isn't that bad compared to what the fuck was out there and no, MGS doesn't count as a stealth game since it was basic as fuck - kill a guard and it vanishes forever but get spotted once and keep killing guards and they have an infinite supply and know where you are at all times

Just get the laser pointer to the pistol without any upgrades. It gives 100% accuracy.
>>
>>738649764
The story did seem really interesting. Its a shame I wont be able to experience the rest of it due to how ass the gameplay is.

>>738649726
The stealth didnt seem to be any different from any other generic stealth system in video games from what i played. Then again, i rarely ever play any stealth games so what would i know
>>
>>738649962
>The stealth didnt seem to be any different from any other generic stealth system in video games from what i played. Then again, i rarely ever play any stealth games so what would i know
Depends on the game
For what was supposed to be a FPS with actual shooting mechanics, it delved into the stealth quite good
Shame that it's broken like it's sequels due to being able to go into vents to reset the AI
>>
>>738649556
skill issue
>>
>>738650109
Ah yes, the luck-based combat system is totally a skill issue
>>
it's good gestalt fun but you should beat the first level at least
>>
>>738649556
>The combat is frustrating chance-based bullshit

You sound like an absolute moron, just hit them on the head, you can literally do the entire game with just the pistol.
>>
>>738650173
NTA but it's not entirely luck based - if you invest into pistols you can usually hit torso shots 99% of the time within a second of aiming unless you have a bad grip

That said, the fps mechanics were pretty bad and if you dislike the rpg parts of needing skills and weapon mods then I can see you getting frustrated by it
>>
>>738650226
Too bad the game only gives you like three fucking bullets for each gun lol

>>738650174
ill try again, but entering the base entrance just to see a bunch of unavoidable enemy spam makes me really dread playing more of it
>>
>>738649689
You obviously didn't even reach the top of the statue of Liberty.
>>
>>738650285
>ill try again, but entering the base entrance just to see a bunch of unavoidable enemy spam makes me really dread playing more of it
are you stupid? you set off an alarm and are crying because all the enemies are reacting to the alarm? you know theirs like a million other ways into the statue that don't involve you going in the front door and setting off the alarm
>>
>>738650174
Yeah, I think the game's biggest problem is that the first level is really abrasive towards new players. It didn't bother me when I was 13 but zoomers don't have the kind of attention span it expects from you.
>>
>>738649556
hahaha you are stupid

The first level is easily the worst in the game. Big, empty, only two real ways to enter the statue. Deus Ex is a game you need to be patient with. You are playing for the story and atmosphere, not the gunplay or the stealth individually.
>>

It's not luck based, though.

My brother in law who is several years younger than me and missed out on all non Nintendo games up until about 2007 when he was old enough to get his own Xbox and started branching out, finally got to play Deus Ex around 2017 when he bought his first gaming PC. He fucking loved it and played through it multiple times choosing different paths and dialogue options, builds etc. He had 0 nostalgia for it and played it at a time when it was already deemed very old and retro. Still saw it for what it is, a masterpiece of world building, conspiracy, incredible soundtrack, interactivity etc. Only a braindead retard with no imagination and no taste could turn their nose up to what is widely considered one of the best games of all time.

I don't understand when people tell me the games that i liked playing are bad in general if i still spend long hours playing them. Large portions of /v/'s gen Z and presumably gen alpha posterbase continually say nothing i liked stood the test of time. But in 99% of cases they cannot point to any modern example that did it better. Whenever they point to a game they think did it better it's also dumbed down to oblivion.
I'm not speaking about Deus Ex exclusively but just older games in general. Although one thing i notice about those who hate the older DX games is that people who liked the Jensen games ignore the fact that those games had all sorts of undesirable cinematic slop traits like playing cutscenes for takedowns instead of allowing you to perform it yourself. Or significantly dumbed down the creativity in gameplay.

played for the 1st time during covid lockdowns and I loved it
the gameplay mechanics are a bit janky but they're adequate, plus the rpg layer of skills and stats is very well designed and amount of interactivity puts most games to shame
but the star of the show really is the level design and writting/worldbuilding - the former is immaculate and ties every gameplay system together with mission/quest/activity flawlessly ; the latter can be a little kitchy at times, but it is always simultaneously very entertaining and surprisingly layered
>>
>>738649556
Just play it for more than 10 minutes, anon. Every game has unique controls you have to get comfortable with.
>>
>>738649556
I played it last summer for the first time and really enjoyed it. I'm a weeb so I have to force myself to play western shit but I'm glad I finally forced myself to play it. I don't know why, I also enjoyed the gothic series and some others, I guess cause you can more easily mess up your stats in a lot of these games so they need more planning. This game gives you plenty of skill points though, I only remember being limited in the beginning.

Deus Ex has such amazing level design that in a second playthrough I found myself barely using skill points because I could navigate everything easily just by exploring thoroughly and being smart with my resource usage. I mostly put points in explosives to max out my GEP gun, but I was left with a bunch by the end.

It's crazy how many keys and passwords and little hidden hatches there are. If you use LAM ladders and grenades/GEP gun rockets to open up doors you really can breeze through most levels.
>>
>>738649556
The combat becomes less janky when you invest points into the skills.
>>
>>738669289
That's the thing. True level design. Even forgoing the vents/laser tripwires/power boxes for a minute here. You can find almost every password/login to nearly any door or pc. You actually don't need to use the hacking skill or multitools.
Meanwhile a lot of other games just assume that you are going to hack everything, because their devs can't wrap their heads around the idea of actually putting codes in. HR being a good example, the base hack is unlocked by default and game depends on it for progress. Forces you to use hacking to get through certain doors; it actually even rewards you for hacking every door, even ones you do have codes for. And a lot of those doors straight up don't have codes that you can uncover anyway.

Deus Ex, like most good sci-fi, analyzed and satirized (then) modern-day events and and political trends and extrapolated without making it seem like political pandering or caricature
Every time I play it, it seems prescient to modern events, but that's because the future is a function of the past if one is smart enough to see it, which the writers were.
I only played it for the first time in 2012, so there was no nostalgia for me.
If a game like Deus Ex could be made by a major studio in modern times, then it'd be a confirmation of a new golden age of gaming. But only indies are capable of scratching the surface of the depth of Deus Ex which is a shame.

I'm like op, but less gay. Playing deus ex for the first time currently. I must admit that I bounced off the game like 7 years ago and never even finished liberty Island. Now I'm back and loving it, currently trying to escape from the research facility with the little green niggers. I think the difference this time is, instead of exploring every single square centimeter of the map for potential loot and content, I just let myself get drawn to whatever seems interesting to me and let the chips fall where they may. If I miss a secret datapad or pair of lock picks so be it. It's a lot more enjoyable to just play rather than try and get everything perfectly on a first playthrough. 35 years old btw.

Story is interesting. Prescient, even.

The same thing happened to me with Thief when I got to the thieve's guild, but then I got back into it and beat it last year and loved it.

>>
>>738649556
If u want your guns to hit shit then start over, "untrain" all skills and then put all skill points into small guns or whatever its called. Now your pustol will actually hot what youre aiming it

And btw play the tutorial, it has story parts in it that ure missing otherwise
>>
>>738650173
Not luck based. If u havent leveled up in the skill for that weapon type then crouch and wait for 10 seconds and ur reticle will shrink

Or just put all ur skillpoints into guns and it will work like any other fps
>>
>>738650285
Sounds like u dont like stealth. Start with a new character ans put all stat points into guns.

this conversation is particularly prophetic

I also like how often JC Denton gets owned in these conversations, he's smart but obviously brainwashed
>>
it literally isnt chance based, there is an accuracy meter
untrained it will take a while to aim but you can crouch with a silenced pistol and take out most of the grunts with a single headshot
if you get some gas grenades you can throw them at the wall of the base which will make soldiers run out and open the door, allowing you to skip the first island altogether (but you miss out on a fuckton of xp, money and items by doing this)

>>738673879
The game basically took all right wing conspiracy theories of the second half of the 1900s and put it in a video game. Its like john birch society: the game

Deus Ex's story is the one thing keeping it relevant today because the gameplay kind of is a jank ass

It's jank, but it's not ass. See Cruelty Squad, which is practically a sequel in its mechanics and themes.

Brother.

That is ridiculous.

Cruelty Squad is also a jank ass, feels like you need more weapon slots and more augmentation slots

No, he's right, Cruelty Squad is definitely a modern day Deus Ex thematically if not in its JANK ASS gameplay

Yes, so what? I play many, many old games, some much older than deus ex, and i can still easily enjoy them.

I enjoyed cruelty squad quite a bit. It certainly feels far better to play than deus ex, thats for sure.

Well the thing about deus ex is it does shooting (badly) it does stealth (badly) and roleplaying (semi-competently) but it was THE FIRST to do all 3 (Fallout sort of counts but it's not 3D or real time) so it gets a pass from a lot of boomers
Zoomers have games that have shooting, stealthing with some light RPing as STANDARD so nobody really thinks twice about it

Is it really? I've been burned once by buying E.Y.E.
Not every game with augmentations or a theme of transhumanism is just like Deus Ex, and they shouldn't really be compared, I think. E.Y.E. is a good game on its own right but there's few actual similarities between schizo's bizzare adventure in his own head and spying&conspiracy simulator. You are absolutely not supposed to take it slow, for example.

Does Cruelty Squad have similar level design and stealth like Deus Ex? Are there like, alternate routes that require codes and stuff you can actually find?

Can't expect zoomers to find items and also read item descriptions (and also rebinding the laser sight key because the default sucks)
>>
>>738649556
It's an old ass, janky RPG. Yeah the gunplay and combat is straight up not good, but it still is a pretty deep game with a lot to it. If you get used to the systems and get immersed into the story it's a lot of fun.

Btw it's really not chance based at all, it just has a strange aiming system and you have to play the game very tactically.

"Deus Ex is dogshit" is about as popular of an opinion as "Citizen Kane is dogshit".
>>
>>738649689

>>
>>738681658
Citizen Kane is dogshit, but I think Deus Ex has enough to like in it to please any kind of gamer
>music
>atmosphere
>setting
>worldbuilding
>story & characters
>even the hammy voice acting
Are all worth a consideration if you straight up hate the gameplay
How can a shitty 90 minute boomer flick even compete?
>>
>>738654809
Deus Ex systems work fine but even as a masive fan of the game I gotta admit there's some massive jank in there. The aiming and the gunplay is shit, and there is a bunch of stupid shit like how you have to hit guys in like a specific vertabra in their back to knock them out with a dart or baton. It's a great game but it's the sum of its parts.
>>
>>738678963
Cruelty Squad borrows a bit from Deus Ex as well as Hitman but is definitely its own thing. The levels are almost all assassination missions which you can go about however you want. Not as heavy on hacking and passwords but plenty of side entrances and creative use of augments. It’s far more focused than EYE’s game design.

>Citizen Kane is dogshit
Nah it's an incredible movie, it's just very unconventional in its structure and storytelling (it was at the time, and it still is now). It's basically the same story as Deus Ex where it filters plebs automatically because it's dated, unusual, and it doesn't hold your hand, but once you get past that it is very rewarding and interesting.

I seriously have never heard a good argument against it being a good movie, it always just boils down to "boring"

I thought the gameplay was fun, and found the story to be meh.
Sure it has memorble quotes, accurate commentary on society, and Illuminati alien shit was cool, but the overall plot was kind of basic, and endings were half-arsed piss that's barely a conclusion.
>>
>>738683730
Honestly the actual substance of the story is a lot of rambling schizo bullshit. The depth is in how interactive the story is
>>
>>738682712
I hope you realize citizen kane was mostly praised because it had a lot of production techniques that were unique at the time.

NTA, but yeah. A lot like Deus Ex had unique gameplay for 2000 but not so much in the modern day.

It did all those new techniques flawelessly and on top of that it's just a really good and interesting movie too. Everything about it is really well executed, even the stuff that seems weird and clunky at first is actually completely intentional. It looks great, the acting is great, Kane is a great character, there is so much to love. I feel like people dismissing it is just because it gets hyped up so fucking much so people who really can't handle a weird artsy unconventional movie from the 40's end up seeing it and they end up getting filtered. Basically the movie is so overrated that is became underrated
>>
>>738686486
I did a project on Orson Welles in high school, mostly this movie, so I watched it and I thought it was good.
>>
>>738649556
you're right. but the game is more than the wonky combat.

In fact, the combat gets better as you put points into skills, making your guns less rng based.

Play the tutorial, it teaches you everything.
>>
>>738685409
Deus Ex actually does have a level of interactivity and immersion that you practically don't see today, not even in the new Deus Ex games. Only Fallout: New Vegas and Baldur's Gate 3 compare really.
>>
>>738686765
>Deus Ex actually does have a level of interactivity and immersion
Duke Nukem 3D also had that, it's not what made Deus Ex stand out

I say this about the Star Wars prequel trilogy
>>
>>738686882
It's true for the prequel trilogy but only half the time. A lot of the weird shit in those movies are legit fuckups but there is some genuibely interesting and clever shit going on too. I recently rewatched them and I was stunned that Hayden Christianson as Anakin is actually straight up good because I finally understand what Lucas was going for with him but there is still a bunch of shit with his character that just doesn't work dramaturgically

>>
>>738689807
Why does any of that matter when your pistol kills them from outside of their hearing range at a much faster and farther rate?
>>
>>738689889
Deus Ex actually has a very terrible bullet drop mechanic. So your pistol shot outside its max range will hit the feet regardless of how you aimed the shot. There's no bullet drop but it will always hit legs if its out of range. One way to stop you from carrying a sniper rifle in a 1x1 inventory slot.
>>
