Why did character action games give up on having actual game design? I just finished a playthrough of DMC3 and I was struck by the fact that it has actual levels, you have to go places and do things to move forward.

There's cool little platforming bit, puzzles, and every other mission has a novel gameplay scenario like the bit where you have permanent devil trigger chipping down your health or enemies that are invulnerable unless you meet a certain condition.

By contrast DMC5 is just a big corridor that drops a bunch of dudes in front of you as you walk along it. Platinum games are probably even worse, because instead of coming up with full ideas within the framework of the actual game it just wrestles control away from the player in order to put forward a shitty clone of Galaga or Afterburner or whatever minigame that completely kills the pace.

I'm not reading all that

Don't you mean J-Style? "Character action" means literally any real time action game where you control a character

The correct term is Hack and Slash.

DMC never had good level design and neither did any other action game except for God of War.

Because it filters the ADHD casual fags that became THE target audience for AAA industry after 2007.

Zoom zoom and GenA homos literally get filtered by even a hint of non-linearity and puzzle solving.

DMC 3 and ninja gaiden have the best level designs of the genre, they're all set in one place that you explore gradually, and can come back later for new areas, everything is interconnected and feels like a real place, there's some platforming areas, some puzzles, lots of secrets, etc. This kind of level design is so kino, shame no other game tried doing it. I guess dark souls 1 did, but it dropped it right after and never looked back.
>>738651149
they suck, a game should never change the controls for a gimmick.
>>738651663
This, so many people bitched about the platforming sections in doom eternal, which were so easy my brain barely qualified them as platforming sections.

That was literally the standard level design back when game size constraints were a thing
>>

what other action games do this?
I know the first onimusha does and it's really good too, but can't think of any others.

Lady was such a bullshit character.

Like how can women even compete with her?

They can't. Pretty angry teenage woman with a thirst for retribution GOOD.

Character-Action is a subgenre of games that score you at the end of the level or encounter. Like Viewtiful Joe. Okami. Metal Gear Rising. Bayonetta. Sonic Adventure 2.
>>
>>738650957
It's just the gameification of video games. They are trying to maximize appeal to generate the widest appeal. At least what they hope is the widest appeal. Combine that with the entire industry putting in lower effort for (((reasons))).

>>738651205
We call games like Diablo "Hack and Slash" though. Perhaps there could be a better phrase or term for a third person, free form combo focused action game.

Yeah it's called mashing in bloody palace, brainlet

its beat m up
>>
>>738652952
About as well as IRL human males can compete with Dante. Most of us would be lucky to compete with Enzo from Bayonetta. At least he leads an amazing life.
>>
>>738653408
No, it's called "combo labbing on a singular immobile mook enemy in training mode for your youtube clips" you fucking IDIOT.

They had DVD format storage size to work with during the PS2 and Xbox era. This wasn't a problem by then. There were games from the 90s like Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight that had absolutely massive areas and the file size was much smaller. Actual map files do not use that much storage. It's the textures and other things depending on how detailed they want to get.

>defines the beat em up genre as a sidescrolling 2d game in your path.

Honestly though, i don't see how a game like DMC isn't just a 3D evolution of something like Double Dragon. Might as well call it beat em up.
>>
>>738653731
There are actual 3D beat em ups though
>>
>>738653791
You mean 2.5D? My point is that if you take the traditional "beatmup" and put the characters in a fully 3D environment with omnidirectional movement, you basically have a DMC game.

I just want games with manly buff men and badass sexy females doing crazy shit that is edgy and cool.

Why must the lefty normies ruin something that we all enjoy subconsciously. No one is like that irl both men and woman so why not just enjoy it?
>>
>>738653880
There are 2.5D games and also 3D games that play like the old beat em ups which play a lot different from games like DMC and Ninja Gaiden. God Hand would be an example I'd say.
>>
>>738650957
Did 3 have that vertical room with the floating cubes you had to climb up? I remember that part being ass.
>>
>>738653128
So Devil May Cry 1 and God of War 1 are two different genres? Whereas Okami and Cuphead are the same genre. That sounds kind of a retarded classification system
>>
>>738654194
Maybe the genre is actually called speedtranny since the ratings are based on how fast you completed the level.
>>
>>738654130
>like the old beat em ups
Ah yes: because final fight, battle circuit, AvP, turtles in time, panzer bandit etc. play LITERALLY THE SAME.
>>
>>738654428
Speed is a criteria but there are also other score metrics usually, like in DMC style score, red soul orbs collected, damage taken (less is better) etc.
>>
>>738653334
Diablo is a Dungeon Crawler.
>>
>>738653731
Yakuza is a better example.

>>738650957
dunno, 5 fucking sucks because it got rid of all that shit. dmc was way better when it was resident evil with guns and combos. and they didn't make dante fuck lady and reproduce which is fucking retarded.
>>
>>738654842
Sonic and Dante are the same character
>>
>>738654130
Would you say Mario 64 or Sonic Adventure isn't a 3D platformer, because a 3D platformer is something like Crash Bandicoot where it's designed much more like a 2D platformer?
>>
>>738650957
I personally didn't like the gimmicks in dmc3. It is much preferable to games like bayo3 that do everything in their power to stop you from playing as bayonetta. 5 is okay, but it isn't near as satisfying of a challenge as the previous games. It certainly is strange that dmc1 still hasy favorite level design, bosses, and pace out of any DMC, considering its development, but it is the case.
I'm a big fan of ninja gaiden 2, where the game throws enemies into the levels more organically than the series of big round rooms you get in dmc5, but it's still very focused on the combat.
