Do you play vidya on a gaming laptop? Are gaming laptops good?
>>
what the fucking kind of third world language is that?
>>

>Do you play vidya on a gaming laptop
only VNs once in a blue moon

>Are gaming laptops good?
Imagine computer parts that you want and how much space do they occupy and how much cooling do they need. Do you think gaming laptop has enough of both?
>>
>Do you play vidya on a gaming laptop
not if it can be helped
>Are gaming laptops good?
they are only optimal for a very narrow set of constaints
>>

had to go cross country for around a year a few years ago. there was going to be lots of down time in between so i thought it would be good to buy a gaming laptop.

bought an acer nitro 5. decently priced with okayish performance. was able to get cyberpunk running at 75-90 fps on very high settings.
>>
Yeah, the laptop I bought like a year and half ago still serves me well as a portable gaming machine. It's not something you want for anything really demanding but otherwise handles indies and games from past years at high detail and framerate no problem. Also a very good emulation machine.
>>
bad use of money but can see a very narrow set of situations where it might be the only decent option
would honestly just prefer to play low intensity indie games for a while then put money into a pc when life is more stable though.

I do, but why is that image in jeet?

I've heard gaming laptops are pretty good these days but they just don't make sense to me if you play often
>>
>>738658062
Because they run on decade long outdated information or are tech illiterates who tried to run cyberspunk on uncappped ultra graphics on a middle shelf gayming laptop
Not as good as having a dedicated PC still but you can get surprisingly good results in a small, portable package
>>

>I've heard gaming laptops are pretty good these days
They aren't. They're built like shit still.
>>
>>738657382
i boughted the older legion 5 with an rtx 3060 and in terms of performance its pretty decent actually. my main problem is that it runs so incredibly hot, and the airflow is sub optimal unless you place it in a way so the bottom is heightened. i regret buying it a bit because i actually have a desktop so i dont use it for gaming at all anymore. still nice to to have a good pc that you can actually carry with you but a waste of money. also draws so much electricity that the battery lasts like 2 hours max under load and the fans sounds like a jet engine

costed me about 2000$, i can play mh wilds at 1440p 60fps on high settings even though that game is optimized like fucking trash so i can play basically anything i want. i'm also too lazy to think about setting up a desktop even though it would probably be better in the long term. if you're going to get a gaming laptop, get a cooling pad, this is mandatory unless you like the thing running hot as fuck and throttling, just the gaming laptop tax unfortunately

They're decent nowadays.
Nowhere near as strong as a pc, but thankfully most good games don't have hyper realistic graphics anyway so it works.
>>
Yeah they're not bad if you use them to remote into your real gaming desktop PC

If you don't have a rig (aka student), gaming laptop is your all-in-one.
If you're already working a desktop is a better choice

I use a gaming laptop to easily game with my friends at in person get-togethers. Beats lugging around a huge desktop and peripherals.

Its definitely a luxury though. And I paid 3.5k in 2020 to get something comparable to my desktop PC. However, it still runs what we play great so I'd say it was a good investment.

The downside is, it isn't great as a regular daily driver. The battery dies in less than an hour unless I go through and disable a lot. It is a 17" for the screen for gaming, but thats a bit big for me for cafe use. And even though I got a very thin one, its still kind of heavy.

I find myself wishing I had another smaller, lighter laptop for couch use or for on the go.
>>
>>738658298
And it's still built worse than a MacBook which will last 7+ years

I had a laptop for gaming and it was miserable to play anything even relatively new on it. It died on my within 2 years if I remember right.

I had a couple over the years (1 Asus and 1 pcspecialist custom build), they get the job done just fine, the last one was mostly hooked up to an external display anyway which is when I realised I didn't need to worry about space and mobility anymore. If you can get a decent rig for the same price pc ram sticks go for these days, even more so
>>
>>738657382
No. Those things run FUCKING HOT. Unless you really have no other choice, like you have to travel around a lot, I wouldn't get one. And I wouldn't play at 144Hz either, your GPU will most likely not hit that framerate target with newer games either and full load would just heat-rape your fingers. Personally I just limit every mobile device to 60 FPS, nothing more. Though it really won't matter for battery life on your laptop, because it doesn't have any fucking battery life.

undervolt and use a cooling pad, this is basically not an issue anymore
>>
I've been daily driving a budget one for 3 years.
Performance is shit because gtx 1650.
Recently the screen got a thin flickering line on the bottom so i got an external monitor and use that.
The vents get clogged to hell in like a year so i have to open up and clean it, i just did that today, i hate thermal paste.
Should've gone with a cheap prebuilt and upgrade later.
>>
i only buy gaming laptops but its not really for gaming i just like having powerful hardware and i do photo/video editing as well as local auto1111/comfyui. tldr id rather have more power than i know what to do with than have not enough power.

A desktop is better if you can afford one, and by that I mean space more than money. I had a desktop when I lived with my parents, but now I have moved out, and I drift from place to place, so a gaymen laptop is an obvious choice. I would never be able to drag that hunk of shit around with me without breaking it.

I bought the cheapest LOQ (2050 but 24GB RAM lol) before the apocalypse for dirt cheap. Before I only had cheap office laptops but I wanted something sturdier, the 2050 was kind of a bonus. I though I might try a few older games because I had a lot of free time during work (which I usually used to shitpost or watch something).
Wew lads I was missing out. The 2050 can actually deal with almost all indies and even AAA at 1080p/medium/60fps like Yakuza 8 or games from the PS4 era like God of War. Oh and emulation. Everything below PS4 seems to be fine. In hindsight I should have bought a 4060 setup but I was planning to build a PC back then. I have an insane backlog of just the above games so I'm not salty.
I'm really impressed with the LOQ, it is very quiet (mostly because the cooler is the same as for the highest end GPU model).

>>738657382
I got one last year. It works fine for me, but I would only recommend one for the portability.

Had a 3 year old Asus A16 that I got tired of and sold not long ago. The issue wasn't even gaming but how annoying it was when not gaming. You'd think they have idle power consumption dialed in by now but not really. Even after I repasted it with PTM7950 and repadded with both pads and putty several times, the thing would frequently kick the fans off because it had trouble keeping temperatures under the 60's, and it wasn't particularly quiet about it either.

Acer Predator

Got it 7 years ago. Am due for a replacement.
Redid the thermals twice, switched out the 1 TB HDD for a 2 TB SSD. Regularly open it up to inspect and to clear out dust.

Still runs like an absolute champ. Some friends have had issues with their newer configs causing games to crash. I don't think I've ever had a crash on this thing.
Only ever had issue with the HDD starting to fail, hence the replacement mentioned above.
I don't know how good or reliable the Predator series is now, but if I really wanted to - this thing could run for another 4 years no problem. Every time I redid the thermals, it felt like I was running a new system.

Never owned a proper gaming laptop. I find fiddling with desktop computers pleasant and I can upgrade parts of instead of replacing the whole system. Laptops don't usually let you change hardware beyond RAM and storage.

>Do you play vidya on a gaming laptop?
not currently but i have before
>Are gaming laptops good?
no but potentially yes. i can't speak for the current state of the market since my experience was in 2019/2020, but used gaming laptops tend to be a steal
i bought one for $500 from someone on fb marketplace, used it for a year, then sold it for $650 when i was ready to buy a pc
>>
pic related is the laptop is bought last black friday.
is it loud and hot during aaa gaming? kinda.
does the battery drain fast? kinda.
is it bigger than a memebook at 2kg? kinda.
does it humiliated even top of the line memebooks with its OLED? absolutely.

but it's a very capable, portable, complete PC for 1400 euros with zero hustle. laptops are absolute ace if you can find one at a good deal.

I personally dislike laptops overall. If I didn't need one for work I wouldn't own one period.
>>
>>
>>738657382
Yeah, I got one with a 5080, an OLED screen and shit. Laptops are more convenient, I can play from my bed and take it with me when I go back to my parents' home.
>>
Its a luxury. I have a 4090m and a desktop 5080. Surprisingly the 4090m is used more often due to sheer portability and convenience
>>
>>738663281
It's the latest iteration, It's not really an xbox, even if it has xbox in its title. It's just a portable pc focused on gayming.
>>
>>738657382
Yeah I got a 14" with a 5080 and it runs pretty good, though I've mostly been playing at 30 with RT. It can also run fortnite at 60 dead silent so that's nice.
>>
>>738657382
Indi games yes, high graphics demanding games you'll be able to cook an egg on your laptop. You'll also spend an arm and a leg if a part breaks
>>
>>738657382
I bought a refurbished mobile workstation with specs strong enough to handle older AAA games(works well with Witcher 3) and stuff like Vintage story on high settings. Technically the GPU is rated for professional graphic/3D work.
Fans are noisy with just like 3 steps of speed, but strong enough that cooling pad can't help much at all besides raising it for airflow and can keep CPU at like 75C at near-max usage, it gets better when I use ThrottleStop to curb down the insane wattage and set temp limit to 90C.
I went with it because I'm too lazy to handle the desktop and I don't have that much desk space in first place.
Not sure if I should bother reinstalling the OS from Windows 11 to 10. It works well enough so far.
>>
getting pro7i with 5070ti, mobile 5070ti is equvalent to 4070 so it should run all games decently well.
>>
>>738657382
You need 5060 or 4060 at least
>>
>>738657382
Yeah old games mainly, it’s fine for long trips and such.
>>
>>738657382
I did when I was a poor fag, switched to desktop and never looked back

>>
>>738658062

>>
>>738657382
Gaming laptops are crippled by design. Power supply is lacking, so is its cooling. Everything is fucked. You're paying a premium for parts that can do more so you could do less on the move.

they are a compromise you could make if you have nowhere to put up a proper tower or are moving around a lot, but they are objectively inferior to a regular PC

I used to live and die by gaming laptops. As far as the worth, it depends on how much disposable $$$ you have. Ran with an Alienware laptop from 2013-2020 and really liked it. The battery life absolutely sucked but ran everything I wanted so for my purposes it absolutely did the job. Overpriced as shit and was begging to be put out by the end of its life but I never regretted buying it. You can do better price wise than Alienware tho. Also idc what anyone says but I also just love the designs of the older Alienware. Really ran with the Alien motif, shame they fell off that. But ya they can be really good just be sure to be near a power outlet. Also buy an extra replacement battery while they still make em. Even if its still perfectly fine, it wont be.
