>Initial reviews of Outpost were enthusiastic about the game. The American version of PC Gamer rated the game at 93%, one of its highest ratings ever for the time.

>James V. Trunzo reviewed Outpost in White Wolf #49 (Nov., 1994), rating it a 5 out of 5 and stated that "Outpost excels in every way. It plays like a great science fiction novel reads. The graphics, sound and game play are state-of-the-art. I am extremely impressed with the game's depth and variety of approaches to problem solving. The game is also educational without being intrusive. I learned amazing (almost frightening) facts about our space program's capabilities. It was almost like looking into the future."

>Following the release of the game, the game's general bugginess and perceived mediocre gameplay, along with the lack of features described in most of the game's reviews and the game's own documentation, led to a backlash against the computer game magazines of the time by consumers who bought the game based on their reviews.
>In 1996, Computer Gaming World stated "the design was so incomplete that many of the actions you took made no difference in the game’s outcome. Poor documentation forced players to buy the strategy guide (conveniently authored by the game’s designer) and the interface design was no help either" and also claimed that the game had been "vilified as 'the greatest screen saver of all time'". >The same issue declared Outpost was the worst computer game ever released.

The design and color language on most all of them is particularly dreadful.

You have in order:
>literal airsoft player in football pads
>yondu from MARVELS GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY TWO TEE EM wearing a life vest
>blue waifu midriff pink haired mere-elf-maid
>chunk, the polynesian plant in an oversized bear suit (corporate said we can't show women skin if its not a primary or secondary color"
>The Stigg's non-driving, non-lifting, suicide-by-rocket sister
>Outbreak (1995) featuring biblically accurate HEV suit helmet
>Lost on her way to a fantasy RPG (we forgot to fuck up the colors of her outfit)
>The hat man forma de teal
>Baz
>Actually copied from Overwatch instead of nearly copied from Overwatch
>The trash parts from custom robo gamecube, now with 100% more rubberized padding

If it takes skill and experience and they ended up like this, clearly they needed more skill and experience or something was actively fucking them up.

I still want to know how any of that shit passed the approval stage.
One retard thinking this hideous color vomit actually being appealing to anyone - whatever, I know retards like that myself.
But this had to go over the desk of many many people, plenty of whom will have been detached enough from the initial social bubble that came up with it to be able to see how shit it looks.

How did all of them give their "okay" for that? Whenever I get a retarded, dysfunctional proposal on my desk I call my boss and let him know that this shit isn't going to work out and we'll regret it if we go ahead with those plans.
Usually they get changed.
>>
>>738670319
>But this had to go over the desk of many many people
That's the problem.
No one thing is the big issue that you can point at, it's just 'this looks boring'. But the more people have given their approval already, all industry veterans and "experts" (i.e. the people who made that shit), the more you look like an ignorant idiot if you stick your head out and say this is shit, and the more you damage your career.
But also, we know that a lot of people were quietly very embarassed by this. That's why no one heard about the game ahead of launch. If they all thought it was good, they'd have put effort into marketing.
>>
>>738670241
And why wouldn't the employee rat on you unless he got paid the inflated rate?
>>
>>738670319
Wasnt this shit being ran by a retard who demanded to be called a professor because they identified as one?
You don't really talk back to your boss in an environment like that. You just close your eyes and produce the slop they want.

fresh off the press

>made by the former game director and project manager of Piranha Bytes (responsible for Night of the Raven, the Risen series and the two Elex games) and his wife, both who have almost minor lolcow status amongst Gothic fans
>and ONLY those two
>and neither of them has any programming experience whatsoever

>game costs 20 bucks
>EVERYTHING is made of free, default and store-bought assets and most of them are terribly implemented like graphic and sound options being tied to save games, the UI scaling wrong at higher resolutions, assets hovering or clipping into others, the final boss having misplaced textures, default Unreal Engine font etc.
>absolutely horrendous writing that feels like as if it's written and aimed at retarded 5yos, collectable "lore" tidbits that apparently were taken from fucking Wikipedia and an absolutely shitty main story where people figured out the big plot twist FROM THE DEMO
>apparently one of the worst combat system in recent history made where enemies can kill you even when dead because shit gets calculated AFTER an animation played, enemies dodge by just shifting backwards without any animations and everything can be killed by simply walking around them
>most voice actors are decent to good and some are even old Piranha Bytes staples but the main character is voiced by the dev and sounds absolutely atrocious - and if that's not enough: he also voiced the first NPC and the main bad guy, resulting in him constantly talking to himself with changed voices
>tons of game systems that are completely pointless like sneaking that only is required and useful during its tutorial
and much more

One of the former PB devs is currently constantly shitting on it and sharing anecdotes like how when he was writing the lore entries for Elex 2 he DARED to describe one enemy as maybe being the descendant of dragons which made the game director tear him a new one since even just mentioning dragons would make people compare it to Skyrim and they'd have no chance against that one because according to him it has the best dragons ever in gaming.
During his Cralon-playthrough he got massively fed up by it because the first thing that happens in it when the main character sees a statue of the main bad guy is him saying: "this creature looks like a dragon..."

I know, but for a government funded videogame? it just feels so surreal, as if there aren't a billion other things tax payer money should be spent on.
Everyone always says "No taxes without representation" and then they never get representation and just deal with it

>a government funded videogame?
You're acting like there was some bill enacted to fund it or it was some government department making it. It's a privately made game that availed of a government grant for art projects. That's what it's there for. Why would a "taxpayer" have a say in how that game was developed?

Why WOULD they? You do know where it's going; to a grant for art projects. This isn't complicated.
Like here, we have a grant for people who buy derelict houses and renovate them, if they met certain requirements. My taxes contribute to that, but you're acting like I should have a say in how someone availing of that grant designs their kitchen. Or a grant for college education meaning I should have a say in what their degree is.

Apparently Björn Pankratz was kinda hard to work with and considered himself more competent thsn he was.
People who worked in the office below often had to go outside to get a clear head because things got a bit TOO loud up there, be it phone calls with the publishers, keyboards flying through the room or conflicts with his wife.
He considered the Elex series his baby, his own Gothic, to the point where he claimed " "I" am Elex", hence why the main character is even bald like him (and yet again in Cralon).
All the shit main and party quests and "Oh, look, a lever - I wonder what THAT one does..." writing in the games can be traced back to him and it's basically nothing BUT that in Cralon.
There's also a running gag with him and Elex 2 where he claimed that the issues of the first one will not only be ironed out but doing so will be "Chefsache", i.e the boss will handle it - a lot of that stuff ended up being even more laughable.
And finally, there's the issue with him and his wife constantly being referred to as "the creators of Gothic" by countless magazines and websites, mainly due to becoming somewhat of the face of the company over time, despite him only joining later during G1's development as QA grunt while Jenny joined somewhere during the Risen games.

Looking back, I don't get what the issue was with this ad. I've heard people say it was somehow insulting or rude to his fans, but I fail to see how. It's bold and a bit juvenile, but when I hear fags say it was some "betrayal of trust" I'm just left confused. The game was shit and released unfinished, but aside from maybe exuding overconfidence in the product, "John Romero's about to make you his bitch" isn't really offensive - it's hollow deathmatch trashtalk, nothing more.

I don't think the ad is offensive, it's just embarrassing due to the final product. It's someone talking a big game, that people already had high expectations for due to its long development time, and failing to live up to any of it.
