I wanna learn Japanese but moreso to recapture that childhood nostalgia of being a young American kindergartner military brat stationed in Japan. I miss the sites, the wonder of not really knowing where I am or why everything is so strange but liking it anyways, Seeing a bunch of anime that I would later find online and all those candies that I loved that might be out of production. Being a young boy with a crush on a Japanese girl who kissed me. I know that everything has changed drastically and no matter what, I was a young kid and even if I went back in time to that era, it would be so different now that I am an adult, but fuck I miss it and learning japanese was one way for me to relish the nostalgia while I remember it. I hope I can rekindle that when I relearn japanese as I am preparing to go back in college. Haven't studied nihhonese since the first couple months of COVID

>>738686292Dont want to bother learning 2 or 3 alphabets that I'll realistically never use. Wanted to learn japspeak so I begrudgingly learned hiragana but then the lessons went on to katakana and I said fuck that. Would be nice if there were good resources to learn with only romaji or hiragana, because I'm just not interested enough otherwise
Every time I go to Japan I do great keeping on top of my studying, it's so easy, but every time I return to America it's difficult to get the daily immersion and also I get incredibly depressed from leaving Japan and returning to America.

>>738690993because its true
As a non eop, Japanese has a lot of ways to convey tone in text that simply don't exist in English, and localizers have to cope by making the dialog over the top because if you translate literally it sounds pretty dry. Even the "literal translation" in the op is ornamented, not as much though. It's only when the localization starts to remove or make stuff up that I draw the line.
>>738690885Is wanikani good?
>>738691383Eh, its pace was okay. And for better or worse, I liked that the site had little writes up and mnemonics to try to help you remember the characters better. And I'm pretty sure you can go through a core 2k deck on Anki a lot faster than you can with Wanikani - with Wanikani I'm at about 950 days of daily reviews - but I would have probably burnt out before even completing that 2k deck with Anki in comparison. Early on, I had tried to do about 10 new cards a day, then at the middling portion I tried to just add as many new cards as possible, got blasted with a huge 300+ reviews a day, then tried to slow down my daily reviews to about 200 a day and that's more comfortable for me.
i got filtered years ago... do i try again bros?
>>738691202just by playing gaymu, reading mango, and watching animu you can pick up the grammar on your own. n3 is doable without opening a book, but reviewing for the exam is recommended. dedicated study is strongy advised for n2 and n1 since some n2 grammar points are relatively uncommon (i.e. you don't hear people using だけに, だけあって, ことか, あまりのXに/で, にあたって, に先立って, etc. every 5 sentences or so) and you need to be careful with groups like にともなって/とともに/にしたがって/につれて, and half of n1 is formal/literary stuff which you won't see often unless you're into reading books or stiff ceremonies (かたがた, かたわら, そばから, てからというもの, の至り, 極まりない, が最後, を皮切りに, かと思いきや, ようかまいか, こととて, にあって, XあってのY, をもって, にひきかえ, etc.)the real challenge is actually using the fancy words you're forced to cram but that's beyond the scope of the jlpt
>>738687905>If somebody came up with a course which used only romaji and focused on listening comprehension and interaction it'd be a top sellerIt wouldn't because it's a dogshit idea. When you're a beginner, kanji are daunting, but once you are trying to read books for native speakers they become your best friend.Vocabulary is going to be an issue far more often than anything else from intermediate level and beyond and kanji really help in giving you an idea of what a word means even if you can't actually read it.
>>738686292The more I studied Japanese, the more I began to dislike the culture to the point that I developed a disdain for it even. They're excessively fake people. >>738708592true, however its only because there's not a good way to figure out how to read Kanji at least on the western internet, someone should organize an online database with different Kanji being categorized into two forms for learning purposes:>Place you encounter the Kanji in real life at/type of context.>Sound-based reading, as in, categorized by the sound the Kanji make.these two would speed up learning massively.

>>738708615if you are talking about live machine translations, those will never be accurate. you need the whole script before translating japanese since the most important part of the sentence comes at the end, not at the beginning. so a japanese sentence could sound 1 way 90% through the sentence, and then be completely different with the context provided at the last 10%, that fucks with LIVE machine translations. the only way i could see it being possible is if there was like a 5 minute delay in the livestream, and if ai translations become powerful enough to translate fast, they could have a buffer period where they translate the whole sentence before showing it to you

>>738713420What you have to understand is shitskins are ruled not by trust and honor but by izzat, it's also the same for literal jews by the way.For a non-jew white or a japanese person, being able to do something is the point itself, this is why you see so many craftsmen and inventors from these races across history, if they do it, they do it properly, and god have mercy if they have autism for a particular something, because they will move heaven and earth to make it possible even if it's for something the rest of the planet would consider pointlessly inconsequential, and likewise failures are something not to be ashamed of because you can always learn from them and continue improving further and further in a lifelong attempt to reach perfection. It's almost the complete opposite with shitskins and jews, with them it doesn't matter if they "cheat" by literally throwing it at AI and calling it a day, they did the thing with a fraction of effort you did, therefore they are better, massive mistakes be damned, who cares about inaccuracies in slop anyway? They got their pay and got away with it, you should be kneeling to them for being so smart to cheat the system in fact. Just please ignore when infrastructure literally starts falling apart at the seams from so many corners cut and so much corruption pocketing resources meant for maintenance and building new infrastructure. It's similar with chinks and gooks by the way, but chinks have their own specific flavor of brain worms that focuses more on reputation and gooks are extra fucked because they have the worst of both chinkoid izzat and the shitskin izzat.

>>738713515>how to end up with hundreds of anki reviews every day that you will get 90% wrong
I'm genuinely incapable of learning other languages
>>738714135unless you are diagnosed with a genuine learning disability, no you arent
>>738713515rtk ignores so many useful things it's not funny>readings. completely ignores phono-semantic compounds, one of the things kanken autists prioritize>the structure of compounds. they fall into 5 categories: similar, opposites, left modifies right, left is complement or object of right, left negates right. another point kanken autists take advantage of>words. the quintessential building blocks of a language>kanji meanings. instead you get arbitrary keywords. i.e. it won't explain 状 as letter/document (e.g. 招待状, 召喚状, 書状, 令状), 状 as form (楔状, 環状, etc.), 状 used in stuff like status and situation (状態, 状況)>offers arbitrary stories instead of examining the naritachi and etymology. no diagrams or pics that aid recall like pic related either>does nothing about ateji, aka when the runes are not used for their meanings. 多分, 滅多に, 真面目, 滅茶苦茶, 矢張り, 矢鱈, 出鱈目, etc.tl;dr rtk is trash
>>738699240Absolutely not, this anon is right >>738694793You're a genuine idiot.
>>738686292I don't have a use for it and I don't want to learn 3 different writing systems.
>>738715623Of course it ignores them, they're not necessary to learn the kanji, spaced repetition is the most efficient when you're learning as few things as possible and RTK is laser focused on getting you to associate a kanji with a keyword in the most efficient way possible, everything else you can do after learning the kanji and starting to learn vocabYour complaints are equivalent to bitching about why a starter pack doesn't contain advanced material, because it's a starter pack
>>738715623nta but, i did a trimmed down/condensed version of rtk called rrtk 450 and it helped me immensely with learning new vocab, so it's not all bad. it was really fast too, completed it in like a month
>>738716180>Of course it ignores them, they're not necessary to learn the kanji, the things I mentioned aid recall. e.g. much easier to remember 水泳(suiei) if you already know 永遠(eien)>associate a kanji with a keywordyou're literally wasting months of your life to learn arbitrary keywords instead of learning to read. congratulations
>>738716985>you're literally wasting months of your life to learn arbitrary keywords instead of learning to readthe whole point of something like RTK is that some people CAN'T remember these squiggly lines and match them with a word. these people would waste way more time if they just tried brute forcing learning vocab since they don't even remember the kanji. if you were one of those people who were able to learn everything through vocab, then great for you. but there are genuinely people who could study every day for months of vocab and not remember anything because they just see kanji as weird squiggly lines, they don't retain the memory whenever they see similar looking kanji. so it would be better for them to take a couple months to do independent kanji study, then move onto vocab. as opposed to grinding vocab from the beginning just to be stuck with a 40% retention rate at 200 vocab for MONTHS
>>738713064yes anon everything is propaganda and evil and out to get you. we truly live in hitler times
>>738686292The "literal" translation is also wrong. Eop peons just can't catch a break
>>738717217I couldn't remember 檜 if I didn't think of a tree 木+会う(あう)'s old form(會). luckily it's called hinoki tree in English as well, so it's not hard
>>738718148Ok, this is what you want in your games right?>(Hey!/wait a second/exclamation of exasperation), that's a discourtesy (sentence ending particle used for conformation)>For me (particle that marks the topic of the sentence, providing contrast to something/one else) lightning magic is usable (potential form of the verb use, but notably using the object marker on "magic" when this grammar typically uses the subject marker particle instead because of potential verbs actually being intransitive, thus showing the ergative nature of Japanese)>Boey (followed by an adverb that expresses disdain), nothing but fire magic is usable, is that not so (use of the typical double negative for conformation)
>>738720009Yes, I know I wrote in conformation instead of confirmation. I am a dirty phone user. Eat my dick.
>>738718148>>738720009>>738720108This made me realize they missed the message. It's not that Lightening Magic is better than fire. It's that she can use 2 types of Magic while he can only use one.
