Dragon Quest was a huge inspiration for it along with Satoshi Tajiri's love of collecting bugs. Designs needed to be able to be scaled down to Gameboy-friendly portraits with a very limited color palette (or none at all with the original Game Boy), so designs don't get overly complicated and are easily recognizable.
