Starting with /v/‘s favourite>be RTCW>made in 2001>one of the earliest games that uses high fidelity audio making it sound modern even today>game dosnt force you to go stealth but has shitloads of hidden enemy dialogues if you decide to go stealth, not even half life 1 and 2 are capable of this>no ragdolls but it has some of the best enemy death animations ive seen>enemies run away if they see you use flamethrowers and rpgs, very rare enemy ai at the time>actual boss fights that felt like youre fighting big threats and give you immense satisfaction after defeating them>fun af gameplay, plenty of weapons to experiment with>lots of hidden scripted events and secrets>enemies can throw back grenades>one of the few ww2 games that humanizes nazis as normal people with feelings despite being your enemies, the german soldiers are never seen doing atrocities, most of them are usually seen talking about normal soldier stuff and how they want to see things go back to normal pre war
>>738688524Wolfenstein ain't hidden
>hidden gemtldr games aren’t hidden just because they came out before you were born.
>RTCW>hidden gemThen again, might as well be when even the games of shooting nazis "before it felt forced" will be verboten on /v/ soon enough
>>738688524I agree with all of that, but it's not hidden>one of the few ww2 games that humanizes nazis as normal peopleI always felt so bad for the ones that were trapped in the catacombs with zombies while they heard their friends screaming in the distance.
>>738688524Retard this game was hugely popular when it was released. It was all over gaming media and magazines, and was critically acclaimed at the time for many of the reasons you listed.
>>738688587>>738688731>>738688881>>738688978>>738689043I'm a based oldfag and can confirm OP is right, it did fly under the radar
>>738688978>Retard thinks nazis getting what they asked for unleashing occult horrors they thought they'd rule the world with was meant to humanize them
>>738689216You think the rank and file guys had any control over that? There's a scene where a dude is begging Helga not to go through with retrieving the dagger because of what could be unleashed.
>>738689043No its not retardRTCW was a fucking flop that got 6/10 primarily because it didnt show the Nazis doing evil things. Like holy fuck when I play the game on stealth all the nazi guys were literally just normal people.Plus popularity of GTA and NFS games eclipsed the shit out of it causing it to make even less money and causing Gray Matter to go bankrupt resulting in modern Wolfenstein games being made by libs
>ACHTUNGThe true hidden gemmy is ET
>>738688524I had a pretty good time with Moon Child after that fanmade PC port came out a couple weeks ago. It has some of that classic retro platformer jank but it's pretty innovative for its time and it doesn't pull its punches
>>738688524this game is so fucking bad I have no idea why is it regarded so highly, if you played multiplayer maybe but sp is dogshit, what the fuck is with the weapon selection a pistol that becomes obsolete within 5 seconds of picking up and three smgsonce in a while you get a cool weapon like the infrared sniper but you get like 5 bullets and no one drops more so you'll never use itgenuienly the worst arsenal of any fps
>>738689409It got 6/10 on the PS2 port because it was an inferior port of the campaign with no multiplayer. The Xbox port got 8s and 9s, and the PC original got a lot of 9s. That's not a flop retard. Also RTCW was originally a PC release, and PC gaming was always less popular than console gaming. No shit it wasn't gonna light the industry on fire, but it was still a highly-rated and beloved game, albeit one that didn't innovate the genre like its predecessor Wolf 3D.
>>738688524One thing Id like to add to rtcw is how killing each enemy feels like youre taking down someone of great value. Unlike in Half life and cod series where killing enemies feels like youre mowing grass, RTCW makes killing enemies feels like youre doing something important. Like every single one of those Nazis are just as strong as the player.
>>738690550>once in a while you get a cool weapon like the infrared sniper but you get like 5 bulletsYeah, cause it's an American weapon. You use it for foggy or dark situations where it shines over every other weapon. Even in the three smgs you dismissively list, there's thought put into the balance. >MP40+ plentiful ammo= average damage = good against groups of low-tier enemies>Thompson+ does more damage+ more accurate- limited ammo due to being an American weapon>Sten+ does more damage+ plentiful ammo- overheats quickly so you have to have trigger controlAdd onto that the Venom Minigun, the flamethrower, the rocket launcher, and the FG-42 which are all crucial for the tougher enemies you fight later, I don't get the complaints. Even the grenades are good because you can cook them and time their explosions so the AI can't run away.
>>738691489This is almost as retarded as OP lmao.
>>738690550you had to be there
>>738690630Some more polls to show it was highly regarded at release.
I've tried to get into it a couple times but the gamefeel repels me.
>>738691548Why do you keep malding at the game, retard?
>>738689204No it fucking didn't, retard. I was there on release day and played it for YEARS. It was very popular.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teey_me48A0
>>738689204it didn't fly under the radar. it was briefly very popular before it got absolutely mogged by every other fps being better.
>>738691874Unironically, replay it on Don't Hurt Me. Something that never seems to get mentioned with this game is how the difficulty modes were designed when it comes to making the combat easier or harder in subtle ways. Both the difficulty mode and the strength of the weapon you use impacts the rate of pain states, which I'm assuming is what you're referring to about not liking the gamefeel, where the shooting isn't satisfying enough. There's other things that go into it, but all you need to know is that if you play on Easy, your shots will stun enemies way more often, and you'll enjoy the gunplay more.
>>738692332>posting a video with 300 viewsHoly shit youre actually retarded
>>738692645It's because Counter-Strike held the title for team-based multiplayer shootan, and there was nothing that was gonna surpass it. It's where all the money was in the CPL tournaments too.
>>738692728even among ww2 fps it was the odd man out. as far as multiplayer was concerned, it was eventually competing against bf1942, cod, mohaa and dod
>>738692717https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RStHv63xgWk
>>738688524>I wasn't born yet when this game came out so it's a hidden gem
>>738688524>>one of the few ww2 games that humanizes nazis as normal people with feelings despite being your enemies, the german soldiers are never seen doing atrocities, most of them are usually seen talking about normal soldier stuff and how they want to see things go back to normal pre war Wow, you just had to ruin your post with Nazi apologia. Fuck off, you're not welcome here.
>>738691890Who’s malding that shit just sounded gay as hell.
>>738692717Obviously the original had more, moron.
I played RTCW because it was the top pirated file on kazaa and i downloaded it. It didnt fly under the radar. It was wildly popular for a time.
>>738692826Ehh, RTCW multiplayer itself had a really short 1-1.5 yearlong window before it totally died, but don't forget almost everyone went to ET when it came out, and since it was free, it had a pretty strong run in the mid-2000s there. Battlefield 2 is when there was a clear separation from the pack. Not a WW2 FPS, but Team Fortress 2 really ran off with the class-based, team-oriented shootan in 2007 too.
Bunch of hipsters and contrarians on /v/ larping as old men.Medal of Honor Allied Assault came out two months later and decimates in pretty much every single category. It isn't even funny. The linked video is unironically what it looked and felt like to play on a random ass PC in early 2002. https://youtu.be/b0LhYNZjMXAIts ironic. The makers of RTCW went on to make a Call of Duty expansion but the publishers of Call of Duty threw them aside for the creative heads of Medal of Honor and we ended up with Call of Duty 4 because of it.Gaming is where it is today because Grey Matter was worse at making games than Vince Zampella and Jason West.I don't even hate the game, I think its fun as hell, but I do love how much glaze it gets when Medal of Honor was just far and away the superior game. It still holds up too, unlike RTCW which needs to be blessed by crypt demons to run on modern hardware without mods.
>>738688524I played the Cursed Sands chapter for RealRTCW last night since I heard it got ported. It's mid
>>738690550> if you played multiplayer maybe but sp is dogshitThe entire point of this game was the multiplayer. Almost every game lauded from this era is because of the multiplayer you genuine, honest-to-god social pariah loser.
>>738689504A true gentlemen. I also foundly remember that game. What a gem !
>>738692826ET was better than literally all of those
>>738694586The SP is also wonderful though. It's a great campaign with good variety and really good levels. Shame the bosses are typical FPS bosses and just kinda suck. Especially the final boss, he's pathetic and often dies before doing anything.
>>738694993eh Game Revolution gave it a B
>>738688524>you now remember the Elite Guard
