Keep in mind that Soulcalibur VI outsold both of those franchises' previous game (2 million by 2021, under a "shoestring budget" according to the game's producer) and that there was a recent job listing for a fighting game built by the inhouse Bandai Namco Studio (all the anime games are made by third party developers), with an emphasis on character customization and NPC-driven story modes. I doubt that the next Smash Bros game has any of that.
