The only time you'll use it to knock the bolt in is when you're playing with it really quietly and don't want to wake mom up with a loud CLACK of the bolt slamming forward. Past that, a jam is probably because of a stove-pipe, a failure to eject the casing properly, and slamming that forward assist with a store pipe will just make the jam worse.

Normally the FA interfaces directly with the bolt to push it forward and form a seal under adverse conditions but it can't do that here when the bolt would be waaaay further back.
