When did the decline of Sega begin?
>>73870562032X
>>738705620Right when they exited the console market
>>738705642this is probably the answerthe real killshot was saturn pricing before ps1
>>738705620how many threads are you going to make?
Now that they're re-releasing the AES, i hope they re-release the megadrive. They could do it coz they both use the same CPU.
>>738706501I'm skeptical, the new Neo Geo is most likely a modern chip running an emulator with functioning ports.
>>738705620I would argue from the start. Sega never had all their marbles assembled. They always lost them from the start. They always entered the gaming industry ill prepared. Think about it, Sega started the gaming industry not with Sonic the Hedgehog but that monkey boy character who was exceedingly lame looking and because he was lame he failed as a mascot. He failed so much that Sega NEEDED Disney's Mickey Mouse to lead a game for them one year before Sonic the Hedgehog debuted in gaming. You read correctly Mickey Mouse Castle of illusion was released one year before the first Sonic game.Sega was NEVER ready to be a game development company. They winged it and while they had luck on their side at times, it was never going to last. Luck never lasts. And naturally other issues destroyed them like how even now Sega gets into fights with Sega of America. Basically Sega even surviving until the modern day is a huge fluke. The real question is when will Sega truly die?
>>738705620The transition into 3D. There are interviews where they admit that no one at Sega, except for the producer of Virtua Fighter, really understood how to code 3D games. The Saturn was a frankenstein console because Sega realized late into development that they had to make it a dedicated 3D machine. It's a beautiful dumpster fire of probably the most trasitionary time in gaming history.
>>738705642sega cd was the beginning. pretty much as soon as they had a good console competitor they started blasting themselves in the foot over and over again.
>>738708884>Virtua FighterThe new game will fail. No one cares about this series especially given the good sales of Street Fighter and Tekken's latest entries. You can bitch all you like but neither series failed to sell. So this new game will fail similarly to the latest Fatal Fury.
>>738708884What about Sonic Adventure?
>>738708818counterpoint:Sony doesn't have a mascot. Microsoft doesn't have on either.
>>738709145Whoa, Sonic Adventure for the Sega Saturn?!?!?!?!
>>738709256crash? the lesbian? masterchief? forza car?HELLO????
>>738705620Sega was never good to begin with.
>>738705620Sega peaked with the Genesis
>>738709256>Sony doesn't have a mascot.
>>738709316who?
>>738709965this nigga right here
>>738709105This makes me sad because VF is an actual fighting game. But people would rather suffer through kusoge shit like slime rush and meter shit and fucking Heat mechanics. Even Soulcalibur wasn't safe from the super move meter faggotry, and that was the last fun fighter ip and they ruined it to chase the comp crowd when they already have fucking Tekken.
>>738705642I was gonna say saturn but you hit the nail on its head. should have stopped that stupid console expansion race. it makes 0 commercial sense to shrink your customer base with hardware expansions and revisions
>>738705620The console ports of Mortal Kombat 2.
>>738708884>Sega needed to hire an European studio to make a 3d game
>>738705620When the Japanese devs were too racist to work with Americans.
>>738705642>>738709038Somewhere in this period of time. I forget which came first, but focusing on this bullshit made Sega fall behind Nintendo with retarded internal politics and other nonsense that fucked up the development and the release of the Saturn, which has haunted Sega ever since.
they overextended in the mid 90s. They split their focus across four different platforms (16 bit, 32 bit, handheld and arcades) and got raped on all of them
>>738709256Sony had a bunch of mascots they were just third party exclusive and then they became retarded and either A) didn't develop themOrB) lost them to multiplats once the consoles homogenized Or orC) shit like knac, sack boy, and astrobot that worked for maybe a month before everyone stopped caring Microsoft arguably has Chief.
I recall my dad having to constantly return my 32x because of various issues. I'm sure the concept would have worked better if the parts did
>>738705642>>738709038They bounced back with Saturn though. First year of gen 5 they were neck and neck with PS1's sales. I'm not sure why they started flopping the coming years though.
>>738705620Dreamcast is still one of the best consoles ever made.
>>738705620In reality there was nothing they could do after Sony altered the market and stole their client base and later some jRPG niggers from Nintendo.>>738716329>They bounced back with Saturn thoughlol
>>738716515>lolProve me wrong Saturn didn't perform well the first year of gen 5. Obviously they failed super hard that overall gen, but first year they were performing well. This is not an opinion but a fact.
>>738705620Mid 90s, starting roughly around 1994/95 when the PlayStation came out. That was the gen when they really started running things into the fucking ground
>>738716559>the first yearSo only in Japan, because of VF. And the "first year" didn't matter because Sony, even in the early days had games that people wanted.
>>738716693So what if it's only in Japan? They still competed with Sony's Playstation (7M vs 10M units sold by end of 1996) and had all the tools to expand. To say that Sega's downfall started with CD and 32x is simply false.
It's always people that actually had a Saturn as a kid that defend the Saturn the hardest today. Reminds me of people who fiercely defend the South decades after the Civil War
>>738705620Yakuza & Total WarIt was over exactly then.
>>738705620In the early 2000s when they were merged with Sammy and became Sega Sammy Holdings. That's basically when classic soulful Sega died, all of the external studios like Smilebit and Amusement Vision were shut down and the entire game business just became a front for Pachinko. People attribute the decline to the Dreamcast dying, but they were still putting out some great stuff for other platforms consistently pre Sammy. The convenient timing and the old name still being used basically avoided all scrutiny, but in reality what happened to Sega was a tragedy worse than the Square/Enix merger.
>>738706501The Saturn would be more interesting since the games are harder to emulate and get legit copies at affordable prices. If Sega can re-release games for it, it would be worth getting. Including making the console not region lock and re-releasing JP only games.
>>738712174The angry video game tranny made a video about this game. It looked pretty shitty.
>>738716814nah it's more telling who the playstation kids were. There were no good playstation games prior to 1998, only reason Sony won that gen was because they could out produce Sega and Nintendo and had the pull to bully retailers into favouring their products.Sony was never affected by parts shortages like the other two were during the nineties, which is the main reason their momentum stopped dead
>>738718381I say around 96 when it started to get good games with Crash 1, Twisted Metal 2, and Tomb Raider.
>title screen
That monitor and keyboard look awesome I want them
>>738718381>There were no good playstation games prior to 1998The fuck are you talking about? Who doesn't consider Resident Evil or Tekken 2 good games? Prior to 1998 you had those, you had Tomb Raider, Command and Conquer, Symphony of the Night, Soul Blade, Suikoden, Parappa...The first games I played on PSX in 1995 were Jumping Flash and Battle Arena Toshinden and they were both fun at the time. No good games my ass. Where do people get this from?
>>738705620In order: CD, 32x and Dreamcast.
>>738716329>They bounced back with Saturn though.Your kind is so unintentionally hilarious.
>>738718381>their momentum stopped deadb-b-but they bounced back after the momentum right?
Sega was never a premium game developer. They got lucky during the genesis era.As much as i like the Dremacast non of its games hold a candle to PS2/PS1 exclusives.
>all these retards saying the 90sWish I could beat you all to death with a hammer. They were fantastic until about 2004 or so, which is when the arcade division fell off a cliff with the sammy merger. Similar sort of story with Namco merging with Bandai in 2005.
>>738719912>As much as i like the Dremacast non of its games hold a candle to PS2/PS1 exclusives.
>>738720084>They were fantastic until about 2004Delusional, and I actually had a Dreamcast.
>>738720198I don't know why you're talking about the Dreamcast when I'm talking about arcade companies, faggot.>b-but...You love the Playstation, right? How many of your favorite Playstation titles were developed by Sony? Go bite the fucking curb and ask someone to jump on the back of your head.
They could've had something with the Game Gear, but it was released too soon. It required too many batteries, and it would drain quickly. If they have waited a few more years to release the Game Gear with better batter life, it would have done much better.
>>738720347So, the Neo Geo Pocket? Or the Wonderswan? Or are you talking about the fucking CCFL backlight, which would literally never be reasonably portable, given Nintendo had to wait for a fucking GBA revision to add a frontlight, and even longer for a backlight?
>>738720282>arcadeIf you think arcades were at their height in the 2000s that tells me exactly how old you are. That is to say, a bit young to be discussing this.
>>738716329The Saturn had a notorious shadow-drop hardware launch that caught retailers and software publishers off guard, and unable to fulfil customer demand. The western Saturn library is literally one quarter of what was available in Japan.
love the sex jester
>>738720183They ware fine for the time they came out in.I played booth of them on steam again last year. They aged badly and i am convinced i only like them today because of nostalgia.
