I remember both Surges being games that were ALMOST good, but not quite. Games made back when everyone was trying to ride the wave of popularity that Dark Souls had for "tough as nails" action rpg games...but didn't quite get why those were fun in the first place.

Yeah I'd say so. The NG+ system is very cool and it now has optional boss rush modes and other modifiers. Enemy placement (main issue with the game) has also been reworked, and in NG+ bosses get new movesets and stuff to keep it fresh.

Plenty of random shit added (secrets/quests/etc) but I really liked it. Everything about it feels very intuitive. My main recommendation is

They can make the difference between an area being a slog and being fine.

LOTF has more straightforward lore than many Souls games, but its confusing as fuck because the new game has the same name as the old game and is styled as a reboot but is narratively a direct sequel. Basically:

Pre LOTF1:
>Humanity is oppressed by Adyr, big evil god
>They rebel and push his shit in, Adyr creates a demon army (Rhogar) to suppress it
>3 human heroes called "Judges" (warrior, mage, rogue) lead humanity to victory and kill Adyr (see: put him into slumber)
>3 Judges (and their descendants) now rule humanity, golden age for humanity marked by *balance* between good and ebil
LOTF1:
>Centuries later, guy called Antanas (a descendant of the judges) wants to become a god, starts doing spooky experiments and creating monsters
>Balance of the world gets fucked up, but Antanas claims its fine its all just holy stuff
>This wakes Adyr from slumber; he's back, and so are the Rhogar. They invade the world
>Adyr is "intervening" to stop Antanas specifically, claiming that he is going to fuck up the soul of humanity forever
>Enter Harkyn, LOTF1 protagonist, hardened criminal released to help Antanas repel Adyr's invasion
>Late game, Adyr "reveals" to Harkyn that Antanas isn't a good guy and that he's doing fucked up shit
>Gives Harkyn a Rune that can destroy Antanas; asks him to do so and allow Adyr to return fully
>Suddenly, its unclear if Adyr is truly good or evil. Antanas also wants the Rune for himself.

It's alright. It has some pacing problems though and even with the high difficulty mode and extra mutators, the enemy placement is pretty mild. It only really becomes a problem later on because enemy design is really fucking boring and towards the end you just see the same monsters including former bosses over and over.

Me too anon. I'm a simple gamerman, you give me good, or at least decent, non-linear *non-open world* to explore and I'll like it even if other aspects were a bit shit. LOTF reboot has the kind of world design the DaS1 circlejerkers love about that game.

I pirated this when it first came out, played it for about 4 hours. I thought it was inoffensive but also an annoying concession to all the soulsfags that got filtered by the original LoTF. Reason I ended up not sticking with it is it didn't do enough to set itself apart, too by the numbers, didn't push the genre forward in a meaningful way. But then I decided to give it another try years later

The original game had 3 endings:
>Harkyn uses the Rune to lead the humans to victory against the Rhogar
>Harkyn uses the Rune to destroy Antanas and restore Adyr

>Harkyn does neither, and gives the rune to the Blacksmith (canon; Blackmith is Sparky in LOTF2), supposedly leading to a restoration of "balance"; neither antanas autism or adyr shit dominates
So in LOTF1, the Rune of Adyr is entrusted to the Blacksmith. Later, Harkyn took the Rune back as he hoped to personally safeguard it due to growing worship of Adyr within Calrath-particularly among slaves. You can see in Upper Calrath there's a Stigma of the Iron Wayfarer entrusting the Rune to Judge Cleric-and we know what that lead to.

iirc Umbral is a new thing introduced with LOTF2. It is (in theory) ruled over by the Putrid Mother, who acts less as a God and more as a mother parasite; she (and the rest of the Umbral realm) feeds on any shit that goes wrong in Axiom (living world).

The Gods in LOTF are all kind of fucked up, with the Putrid Mother serving as the "outside bet" that the other two major forces are simply unequipped to face. So you have Orius who's "good" but a dick about it, and Adyr who's "bad" but knows what happens if humanity goes unchecked. Then there's Umbral/the Putrid mother, who just want to devour everything and return the world to a state of total silence by breaking the barrier between Umbral/Axiom. Putrid Mother is far more dangerous than Orius or Adyr.

Not really, especially using the vestige seeds. Most bosses have an umbral flowerbed very near them so you can make a temporary bonfire there if you are sick of it.

Worst boss run in the game imo is just the slog through the sewer place to kill the 3 mystery niggas, they're barely a boss anyway

depends what you hated at the start. Main changes I've noticed

A lot of NG+ or modifier stuff; when you start a new game you can set modifiers for your playthrough that change the difficulty (usually to make it harder) or some QoL stuff. There's also a crucible aka boss rush mode and you can replay boss fights once you beat them, I guess.

In my experience some of the bosses still have weird tracking but its mostly when they do the whole

so they just buff the fuck out of them. Skinstealer, Flame Enchrantress, etc. It doesn't translate to their regular enemy form, though, so who knows.

Actual bosses are more aggressive now, but the rebalance generally means that as long as you aren't constantly running away or panicking you're fine. As in, rather than it feeling like they're just spamming shit you can now far more easily spot when they're doing a chain of attacks and pick your moment. However they also added "Veteran Mode" which makes bosses even harder, but it's optional. Upside is it means all the boss weapons have new special attacks, usually tied to finishing certain questlines or getting certain endings.

iirc Pieta's sword is extremely good if you do the Umbral ending.
