a game controller
>>
>>738727197
I got mine yesterday.

Pros:
>Steam input is nice and flexible
>Sticks feel good
>Trackpads feel like a more useful innovation over the PS4/PS5 touch area
>Back buttons feel good
>Controller has a lot of support
>Puck is convenient for charging while you play
>Battery life is great
>Custom inputs, like assigning a weapon wheel to a touch pad, are really cool

Cons:
>Steam input isn't its own thing, must run with steam
>Plastic is not very good; my hands sweat when holding it too long
>Feels less premium than a Dual Sense PS5 controller
>Some coarse/sharp edges; machining isn't best
>My right trigger squeaks out of the box, will probably have to open it just to fix that
>Trigger housing is not very good; it's quite easy to pinch your finger between the trigger and housing
>Magnet resistance on the charging puck is not strong enough to resist pushing a cable in; run the risk of scratching your controller with the copper contacts if it slips

It's a very feature rich controller but does not feel very premium.

RPCS3 has an SDL input, which allows native steam controller support. You still need steam open in the background for the steaminput software. It's possible for devs to support it without having to launch the game through steam. Alternatively, most emulators will recognise it as an xinput controller otherwise.

what can you even do if you want to play gamepass games. i remember wanting to use my ds4 on an xbox game and steam wouldn't let me add that

>what can you even do if you want to play gamepass games. i remember wanting to use my ds4 on an xbox game and steam wouldn't let me add that
I've not used GamePass in years because they kept jacking up prices and removing games I was half way through playing, so I don't know on GP games specifically. Other launchers, like GOG, Epic, ActiBlizz, Ubisoft etc. all still install games in a normal way, so you really can just 'add to steam,' so I wouldn't put the fault entirely on Valve and Steaminput. I'd say it's equally the fault of Microsoft for having games through their platform install in an esoteric and awkward way.
>>
>>738728930
You can just add game pass games as a non steam game and steam input will work
>>
>>738727796
Do you think its premium price is justified? Be honest. I know a lot of people will act like "yeah, it's totally worth it! I'm so happy with my purchase!" just because they're embarrassed to admit they fell for the hype and made a mistake in purchasing an overly expensive controller.

It is a very feature rich controller, but it is not the best feeling controller I've used. As said, it's not as good as the DualSense in terms of 'feel,' but then the DualSense doesn't have a very good battery life, nor the level of features of this controller, and I'm confident the sticks will fail on the DualSense before the Steam Controller.

I've had a few controllers - an Xbox One controller, an 8bitdo, I have a PS5 and Switch Pro controller too... The difficulty is, no controller gives you a full feature set on PC. So for instance, emulating Breath of the Wild is difficult, because trying to find a controller that works properly with gyro on PC without sacrificing other features is weirdly difficult. I wanted a controller that I could play anything with, with anything meaning current titles, older games, and emulators. The last one was a hitching point for finding the right controller.

So, if like me, you really want a controller that just does everything, you don't care about competitive shit (like trigger locks), then yeah, it's quite likely worth it. The other option is buying multiple controllers and switching for the best one for the situation. But if you have a premium controller, then the lack of premium feel to this one will probably be a disappointment.
>>
>>738729549
refute a single point if you can
>steam deck is an underpowered piece of shit
>steam box will be an underpowered, overpriced piece of shit with no upgrades
>steam is DRM
>steam controller requires steam DRM
>steam sales are dogshit and prices rarely drop unless a game flopped
>steam store has more shovelware than apple and android app stores
>pc mustard ricers once the kings of technology now rely on fake frames and fake resolutions
prove me wrong

>Emulators
If you have SDL, it recognizes the controller with or without Steam (if you remove Steam, you can't use the trackpads), and the same goes for Puck. The only thing is you have to do is close Steam so the virtual keyboard doesn't open, or add it to the Steam launcher (or configure it so the keyboard doesn't appear).

>Games outside of Steam
On Windows, you have to add the game to Steam, and not all games work well if they come from Epic or have a third-party launcher (which you have to add).

It has a very good response time, or so it seems to me. In Soul Likes and emulators, I feel it responds somewhat faster than the Xbox controller or the DS5 and DS4. It's comfortable despite its appearance and doesn't feel too heavy; in fact, it seems a bit lighter than the DS5 controller, although the DS5 is 12 grams lighter.

Damn, this feels way better than the deck. The d-pad, triggers and bumpers are all a big upgrade.
My only complaints come down to mine arriving with a slight scratch on the back (not a big deal) and the right side of the shell having a slight lip (which was also the case on my Deck).

>>738728012
>>738728203
>>738728469
Hold start and it'll make a beep like a hit in pong, that makes it emulate an Xbox controller. Repeat to switch it back to desktop mode.
On Windows you need Steam running for this, on Linux it just werks without even holding start.
Alternatively, just add whatever you want as a non-Steam game and forgo this entirely.

I don't know why they do this shit. Microsoft store stuff has always been needlessly complicated.

Aldo on Android, it only recognizes trackpads, dpads, and the A and B buttons.

Steam Controller 1 is better. Steam Controller 2 was made to appease console retards who still find value in the right analog stick.
>>
>>738729967
>the right side of the shell having a slight lip
Adding to this, I just noticed that if you apply pressure to the side of the front chassis then the whole front faceplate can shift left or right, most noticeable on the grips. A buddy confirmed his also does this.
>>
>>738730951
>>738729967
Mine doesn't shift, but I have some coarseness to the edges of the lip and the screw holes.
>>
>>738731301
The shifting is quite minor and probably nothing to be worried about, I can only really see it if I hold it on its side and look closely at the bottom of the grips.
I was just surprised as I'd never seen it on another controller.
>>
>>738731512
>The shifting is quite minor and probably nothing to be worried about, I can only really see it if I hold it on its side and look closely at the bottom of the grips.
>I was just surprised as I'd never seen it on another controller.
I guess it's because of the construction design. It's just held together with screws right? No glue/million plastic clips. I do hope they do a revision of this controller to improve manufacturing and materials.

Also someone mentioned about bringing up the keyboard, and now I can't figure out why there isn't another face button (like the start button) dedicated to bringing up the onscreen keyboard.
>>
>>738728526
Doesn't work for everything. I had to download SISR to make it work with D4 on Bnet because even if I try to add it to steam all steam does is launch the Bnet launcher even if I'm using the d4.exe because Blizzard is retarded and that's how the game is setup. Because the launcher is not the game, the steam input doesn't work. I had to download SISR to get the universal Xbox 360 controller emulation to make it work with the game. And I don't understand why Valve can't just have this functionality baked in, apparently it works like this on Linux, but not windows.

Other stuff like Guildwars and Cyberpunk which I do not have on steam I was able to add and it worked just fine like that.
>>
>>738731656
>Also someone mentioned about bringing up the keyboard, and now I can't figure out why there isn't another face button (like the start button) dedicated to bringing up the onscreen keyboard.
Steam+X will bring up the keyboard
>>
>>738731807
>And I don't understand why Valve can't just have this functionality baked in, apparently it works like this on Linux, but not windows.
This bit is microsoft's fault. Some piece of software has to run to make the controller work. Xinput is a system level implementation by Microsoft. Valve can't implement that.

Haven't used it long enough to give a strong opinion, especially considering the lack if diverse games played with it.

Personally I think there's a learning curve with the trackpad, trying to use it mixed with gyro in shooters and I'm definitely worse than my old regular controller but I know I need to practice and adjust settings manually, issue is how long.

If you're not someone who wants to "re-learn" how to use a controller, then stay the fuck away from this thing.

My 60 year old mum likes to play on a Steam Deck and I have to show her how every time she needs it (because it's rarely she does need it).
>>
>>738727197
Haven't got mine yet but looking forward to doing the exact same shit I've been doing with my steam deck for years. I already know this thing will be great. Might play cataclysm dark days ahead on my big tv from the sofa using touchpads as radial menus.
>>
>>738731807
at what point does the steam input not work? have you tried launching the game anyways and check if steam input still works? never tried blizzard launchers but i have heroic launcher (launcher i use for epic game store) added as a non steam game and it works even by launching the game
>>
>>738732242
Yes, I tried multiple times. I know about the action set swapping by holding the menu button because I do that on my steam deck but even in the Gamepad action set it was not recognizing gamepad inputs only keyboard ones in the desktop layout. I tried launching the Bnet launcher as a non-steam game and it wasn't working until I installed SISR.

No it fucking didn't.
It's a 24 hour drive from Utrecht to where I live, less than 12 to the border.
It's been 126 hours since the package left Utrecht and they still haven't handed it over to the local courier.
What are these swampniggers even doing? Everything I've had sent from Germany gets here within three days.

The steam frame is making me, someone who hasn't tried VR even once want to finally give it a shot. So I feel like others might be in the same boat, I think there's a lot of people that have been holding out for the next valve headset and I wouldn't be surprised if that is sold out pretty fast. But I'm assuming for those products they will do a deposit reservation system like they did when the steamdeck first launched.

i use mine on my linux pc (aka homemade steam machine) and i love it, i honestly dont think im getting an actual steam machine anymore. it works great for stuff outside steam too since its built into the kernel. also cool i can wake up my machine with the controller too, it sucks you cant turn the machine on with it like a console or actual SM but its not really an issue since i usually leave it in sleep mode anyway. its lighter than i thought, but maybe the heaviness of the steam deck makes holding this feel weird since im not used to it. overall, dualsense is my fav controller ever but this is neck in neck and sliiightly edges it out due to track pads.

Yes. It works OOTB on Linux and you can use something like SISR if you're still >using wangblows in 2026

Not use gapeass for one.

>steam deck is an underpowered piece of shit
Today? Sure. When it launched? Not really. It's also still the best option since all the competitors seem to be hell bent on not having trackpads for some reason.
>steam box will be an underpowered, overpriced piece of shit with no upgrades
Agreed. I don't really care about it.
>steam is DRM
Wrong. Steam offers DRM for devs. Devs can choose whether to implement it or not.
>steam controller requires steam DRM
Wrong. It works as you'd expect on Linux. Om windows it needs some software. This can be Steam Input or something else.
>steam sales are dogshit and prices rarely drop unless a game flopped
They're definitely not as good as in the golden days, but still pretty good.
>steam store has more shovelware than apple and android app stores
True. You can just ignore it. I'd rather curate myself what I want to buy than not have the option.
>pc mustard ricers once the kings of technology now rely on fake frames and fake resolutions
That's consoles. Only on PC do you have a choice not to use that.

it was never built for AAA gaming and if you ever intended on using it that way then you're brain dead. It was (and still is) great for simple titles, indie games, and emulating older systems.
>>

That's fair, and honestly, despite the Deck's hardware it can still play some pretty high end games provided you're willing to settle for 30 fps, it's just unreal slop and similar that falls on its face
>>
>>738741284
>Next gen consoles will use the same shitty dual-joystick layout.

It's so backwards that this could be true. Touch has been the dominant input method for a long time. Not just phones and tablets but everyone I know with a laptop has become extremely proficient with the touchpad and they don't even use a mouse in the home. But even when playstation adds one its deliberately placed to be useless.
>>
>>738727197
>paid 100 dollars for the same thing my xbox 360 controller does

i dunno
>>
>>738745273
It absolutely was intended for AAA titles but the Nvidia mafia set out to kill their 10 series via gaytracing and the Steam Deck (and every graphics card) was brutally caught in the crossfire.

It ran Elden Ring and Baldurs Gate 3 perfectly fine, two years later it needs upscaling from a lower rez to run a Sonic kart racer? The performance of anything under the 3070 was directly sabotaged (which in reality sabotages the performance of all cards because you can't get as much out of your top of the line card because)

Without gaytracing a 10 series card (and a steam deck targeting it's native rez) would have worked for 1080/60 for a decade longer

I don't even get what you're trying to do here. If the puck is attached to the controller, why would the puck be unplugged?
And I wouldn't want the magnet any stronger because as it is now, I can pick the controller up with one hand and peel the puck off with the push of a finger which feels very nice.

how do the trackpads feel to use compared to the original steam controller?
Trackpads are a game changer and I try to configure most games I can to only use dual trackpads and no face buttons or sticks. But on the 2.0 controller I'm worried about them being in a more awkward spot to use as a primary input

I really dislike concave sticks, but the Steam Controllers are the least bad to me. Still going to get some caps for them when they start coming out though.
>>
Can confirm for all 5 freaks including myself, that you cannot pair the old controller to the puck (which I figured would be the case and am not upset about this)
>>
>>738755708
I quite like a concave stick, but the Steam Deck has a pretty slippery plastic surface on theirs, which forces you to thumb the edges rather than the centre (which is good sometimes, but not all the time). I prefer the new design on the steam controller.
>>
>>738755708
>>738755892
How do the sticks compare to the dualsense? If you've tried the dualsense.
Specifically the resistance. I don't like how easy it is to move the sticks on the xbox and 8bit do controllers.
>>
>>738755231
i can see why they dont have a headphone jack. the high data transfer from playing sounds would probably mess with the controller latency and thats one of their marketing with the steam controller
>>
>>738756316
The dualshock 4 has a lower latency rate and has a headphone jack.
>>
>>738756151
I just did a side-by-side with my dual sense, 8bitdo ultimate, and steam controller. The dual sense has more resistance on its sticks, but the steam controller has more resistance than the 8bitdo.

In terms of the thumb-pieces, I'd say the dual sense wins again; it's got larger and more comfortable thumb-pieces. I would probably put the Steam Controller last in this regard, but it has a reason to be last; the surface of the thumb sticks is capacititive, so they can't use rubber on the centre of them.

In terms of placement, my 8bitdo has an xbox layout. I would say it is PS5 dual sense that wins again, but it's fairly close to the steam controller. Again, the steam controller has good reason for this with the touch pads, which are easily in a better and more accessible position than the PS5's touchpad.

Feel free if you have any other questions bro.
