Why is everyone so obsessed with controllers? Is it some kind of mental illness like audiophilia?

He is exactly what I pictured a steam controller owner would look like.

Why do people want this thing anyways, I truly don't get it.

It's the same retarded shit as like people arguing over car bands: nothing interesting going on in their lives so brand wars are necessary.

Are you stupid? You know what's the second most important thing to a game next to gameplay? How you control it. We get it. You don't have a PC or Steamdeck so you're upset that people are excited about a dedicated PC controller. Move on, Rajsneed.

Because it's the most significant change in feature set and capability in game controllers we've seen for PC in ages, with the software backend necessary for it to work.
Multiplatform titles i.e. the vast majority of games have to cater to the lowest common denominator - the Xbox controller, because both Xbox and Windows use xinput.
Now you will have more options and choice in how to use your controller to play.

Well, it's more than that, at least 7-8 hours until your battery stops to hold charge after a couple thousand hours of use.
But, that's why I have a second controller and a charging dock, when one runs low I just grab the other and charge up the first.

So, you bought two controllers to have the functionality of 1 steam controller.
You paid roughly 1.5x the price (2x$74) to have effectively half the battery life (made up for by your system) and twice the number of things that can break... and none of the reparability?

Bro if you just like the controller that's fine but don't try to make any arguments about the whacky system you made to COPE with the controllers limitations.

>and twice the number of things that can break... and none of the reparability?
Much better repairability than a steam controller. I've changed the batteries on both controllers more than once, you can completely disassemble a Dualsense with ease and replace almost anything inside it. When I had some "drift" several years ago it turned out that I just needed to disassemble the controller and clean out all the dust and stuff that got inside of the analog sticks.

Also, I only paid for one since the other came with my PS5 :^) 6 years later and both controllers still work fine, only my current batteries are starting to hold less charge after so much use, that's the only issue.

>>738745212
I'd rather just replace AA batteries, proprietary battery formats, even if they're easy to replace are anti-consumer.
Especially 10-15 years down the line when the device EOL for years your only options are sketchy chinese vendors.

>>738745410
Do you have an actual argument?
Since the launch of the steam deck we've seen people play fast paced shooter games with gyro aiming and even RTS with the touchpads and now you can do that with the new controller.
That's quite a big deal, more so than just adding a couple extra buttons on the grips or swappable sticks or other gimmicks.
You can be mad at Valve for tying the controller to Steam Input or be mad at Microsoft for not updating xinput in like 20 years.
>>
There are countless YouTube channels dedicated solely to controllers, but when you watch the reviews, the guys don't play a single fucking game with them. They literally just fiddle with the controller while it's turned off.
It was these channels that concluded the new Hori Fighting Commander was crap, yet at the same time, a Japanese player won EVO (Tekken 8) using it.
For anyone who really cares about controllers, there's not much of an alternative other than testing them yourself.
I had to spend money on two 8Shitdo controllers before I realized just how bad those controllers are in practically every way.

a more expensive and cumbersome way.
they also would need 3 batteries, not 2, to get the same or better battery life.
a pair of AA's have at best 6 watthours in them, and at worst 3.
steam's battery has 8.39.
So it would be bigger than that pack, more cumbersome to fit fingers around, and more expensive overall as you need to keep buying batteries and changing them, or shell out periodically for some NICE rechargable AAs
and if you do THAT you might as well just be using the flat rechargable battery all over again.

Sure the 360 solution is a cumbersome tumour, but they could have figured out a way to implement it if they wanted to.
You don't have to get disingenuous to justify why AAs are actually worse or more expensive in the long run.
Ikea LADDA batteries are Panasonic Eneloop for half the price, 5 EUR for a pack of 4 and will last 1000 cycles, and more importantly even in 50 years you'll be able to get them at any store, probably.
I get 30 hours at least on a charge in my Xbone controller, sure the Steam Controller would probably get less, but still comfortably more than a DualSense.

I'm not fanboying for anyone I'm looking out for my own interests and I prefer AA over proprietary batteries, or maybe it's because I'm almost 40.
I probably won't be getting this generation of the steam controller because the lack of audio seems like a big oversight, I do use the headphone jack on my xbone controller and bluetooth has too much latency for games.
>>
>>738747260
>sure the 360 solution is a cumbersome tumour
I didn't say the 360's solution was.
Their solution was a standard idea made in a time when disposable batteries were king and rechargables were worthless dogshit.
back then it was RECHARGABLES that were the cumbersome tumor.

also ikea's eneloop batteries are not what they used to be.
the high end battery market is more volatile than you think. I know because I seriously looked into it for a bit because my work uses flashlights a lot and I have a nice one I like that uses AAA

>because the lack of audio seems like a big oversight
I completely disagree.
Audio solutions are their own beast to tackle and the market of people that buy Valve Hardware don't use something that simple.
I had a very interesting conversation with a friend breaking down how audio drivers and soundcards and DACs actually work.

Valve is the kind of group that would want to make their own entire Headphone+DAC combo
>>

>>
>>738744564

>>
>>738742927
steam controller 1 was neat because it was a new input method and better than sticks by a longshot
steam controller 2 is puzzling because they put the then new input method in a place where the sticks that they supercede interfere with the function of the controller, being not just uncomfortable but also not being able to glide your fingers to the face buttons/dpad without the bulky protrusions in the way

>I didn't say the 360's solution was.
I'm saying it is.
The wired version is significantly more comfortable, the wireless version was a necessary compromise Microsoft had to make at the time.

>also ikea's eneloop batteries are not what they used to be.
Yes, they are.
The only thing of note is that the 1900mAh batteries are more durable than the 2450mAh, you're trading capacity for longevity.
But they are still the same quality as before and they're still made in Japan.

>Valve is the kind of group that would want to make their own entire Headphone+DAC combo
Oh for fucks sake. Microsoft had a solution 13 years ago that uses a modified 2.4 wireless NIC.
You can actually use the receiver as a network adapter in Linux; it streams CD quality audio (or maybe it was slightly better idk), it's low latency and works just fine.
Nobody's asking for audiophile quality DAC to drive 320 ohm planar driver headphones.
>>
>>738748467
>I'm saying it is.
then you are advocating for valve to do something you describe as bad...
right.

>Nobody's asking for audiophile quality DAC to drive 320 ohm planar driver headphones.
you don't know anything about valve's hardware customers at all, as I said already.

also no.
audiophiles use weird analog solutions they often rig themselves.

You are not as smart as you think you are or you're simply disingenuous, I don't know which one.
If Valve wanted to they could have found a way to implement AA without impeding ergonomics like Microsoft did with their newer generations like >>738748701 pointed out.
I only used the 360 as an example, it's what they had to do to get AA batteries at the time, but they improved upon the design.

>you don't know anything about valve's hardware customers at all
I've learned that apparently they're tech illiterate fanboys and I'm not one of them.
You act like streaming audio to the gamepad is some insurmountable challenge, when it's been solved to a sufficient degree over a decade ago, by Microsoft of all companies.
Even the 360 pad could stream audio from a Windows PC to its headset, but the bandwidth was unusable for anything but voice chat.

Valve simply made the decision that most people don't care enough about having a 3.5mm jack, so they didn't bother implementing audio.
My decision is that I care about it, it's a real use case to plug in nice wired headphones to play on the couch at night.

there isnt.
>I've learned that apparently they're tech illiterate fanboys and I'm not one of them.
You act like streaming audio to the gamepad is some insurmountable challenge, when it's been solved to a sufficient degree over a decade ago, by Microsoft of all companies.
No, thats just you being a retard and hallucinating arguments that were never made.
Again.

I was talking about decent audio that you would spend more money on than shitty headphones for that get all their power from a 3.5mm... which would also fight for power from the controller.
Valve wanted amazing battery life, so they chose it.

>my decision is-
nobody cares about your decision.
I care about your arguments when they are shitty or lying. Nothing more to it.
You not buying means its slightly easier for all the other people to get their order faster.
>>
>>738742927
>Why is everyone so obsessed with controllers?
Maybe you're young. But in the past, we used to get like 3 different generations of consoles like every 5 years, and they'd come with distinctly different controllers every time.

But if you had to wait like a decade only to get a new generation of controllers that were still largely like the past controllers? For games that still look like games that already exist. Then maybe the idea of new controllers wouldn't be exciting.
>>
>>738744564
I'd buy one for my PC if it wasn't for stick drift.
These things are fucking expensive. I don't want to pay that only for the controller to cease working properly in 0-3~ years.

>so you just assume there was room in the new steam controller.
I never did, from the start I said they could have designed it in such a way as to fit AA batteries if they wanted to.
Clearly not in the existing design since it's built around a lithium battery, do we have to argue the most basic and obvious stuff?
Same with the 3.5 mm situation, literally what the fuck are you even arguing for here?
Are you actually claiming all headphones that connect via 3.5 mm are bad? Or that the impact to battery life is so significant that it doesn't make sense to implement?
When this has been a standard feature for 10+ years?
>Muh arguments
You've not argued successfully against any of them, in fact I think most of my points went over your head since you live in some alternate reality where Valve can do no wrong.

Its supposed to be one of the biggest selling points.
It doesn't use clips that degrade or adhesives (aside from trackpads) and is collaborating with a common electronics repair company to provide replacement parts.

So if something on this controller breaks, you won't have to ship it to valve.
You could have a local place to go to.

The entire thing is held together by something like 7 torx screws
There are already a bunch of guides with the company they are working with up on how to replace everything.

/thread - the PS5 controller is the best and you can use it with bluetooth on Windows 10/11 - you might need a 3rd party app to map it to windows correctly - there is no reason for this shit to exist
>>
>>738753313
Huh, that's cool as hell, thank you

>Starts talking about $89 out of nowhere and starts projecting about his inability to afford it
Oh no no no, how embarassing for you lil bro
Man you are going to be mad when you find out I bought the Index and will be buying the Steam Frame too, in fact I hoped the controller would cost more to price out peasants like you from ever being able to afford it
>>
>>738753374
one thing to keep in mind (that all the antivalve shills hilariously don't even try to push on) is that the firmware for this controller is still unstable and in beta.
They are still fixing small shit with it via updates.
For example, the left trackpad had a small deadzone that was entirely software based.

Right now the supply is backed up massively, and the first major wave of deliveries is about to arrive.
So you are best off keeping an eye on it for a little bit, seeing what people actually make of it when they get it in their hands and fuck around with it.
And what valve continues to provide with its updates.

I already got mine and I'm happy with it, does exactly what I wanted it to do.

Because it used to be something fucking simple. You got the logitech, the dual shock, or the X360, possibly with adaper. And the madcatz ones sucked. Now the OEM controlers are fucking terrible so we need to find some good shit.
>>
It's very little to do with the controller itself. It's because it's a new player in the console space. We haven't had this since the original Xbox came out.

I bought the steam controller for my PC because I only have one xbox controller that I hate, and so far it feels and plays awesome. I don't really feel regret buying it; only regret having the xbox controller now.
>>

That doesn't really add up. There's no initial buy-in for Steam, you just download a program and can play Dota2 or some shit for free. If there's no high buy-in, there's no prestige, if there's no prestige, then it's not Apple-like.
