well it is a spellcasting class sure, so it has that going for it, but it's more clunky to use than other spellcasting classes and the spell list isn't particularly great. I'd take him just for the banter. Sosiel is a Cleric and pretty OP with some clever domain choices. Seelah as a Paladin is really strong vs demons if you go the mounted knight route with her, better than Regill but unlike Regill she's a valid target for smite good.


Lann is pretty shit, he's strong early on but he falls off in a way that wenduag doesn't. Arueshale has some of the most busted stats but her class choice is pretty shit and you can't rebuild her. Dwarf Assassin is pretty garbage though, melee but can't survive in it, DPS that loses full attacks reaching the enemy, poor saves, etc. No reason to take him. The Thiefling is a rogue which makes him shit by default, he loses most of his rogue abilities to be a shitty mage but early on he's got his uses supplying more grease to the party and being somewhat of a dodge tank. Sosiel's brother is a secret companion and kind of a joke one at that, don't use him. Galfrey is a secret companion and your seelah replacement for the endgame, you choose her because you want a white woman taking up your Paladin slot instead.

MD can be be very fun even on Unfair but the very early game is a bit annoying due to the fact you gain no bonus spell slots from any stat and your early spellbook is not that good outside of spamming Sleep + Color Spray or Hideous Laughter + Sleep.
As soon as you get Mythic Abundant Spells+ it starts getting better, especially as you unlock Slow.
Slow + Hold Person basically trivializes most enemies barring Undead (it bypasses Demons/Outsiders not being Humanoids and just werks...)
Same for Slow + Phantasmal Killer later and ultimately Serenity + PK for Weird at Home (except it bypasses immunity to mind affecting/fear from Demons like Gallu & Locust Swarm)
Problem is damage wise it's shitty due to how much specialization high spell damage requires in WOTR, feats, gear, mythic feats, spell level...
Throwing a Fireball + Lightning Bolt for example will tickle demons while a Slow + Hold Person of same level will instantly take many of them out for the fight
Chain Lightning + Disintegrate combos is when spell damage gets really good with MD but that's level 16 only or so (Plague of Madness Staff is a must have since it's free Empower + Maximize for the 1st Chain Lightning combo you cast bypasing the no Metamagic limitation of MD!)

Adding to this, these boots also work with fused spells. In fact the game considers all fused spells to be the same spell for the purposes of triggering these boots' effect, so after 4 spells you get a quicken for free.

Get both Focus Enchantment + both Spell Pens early or Ambuscanding Spell, max CHA and DEX for Initiative and DC
Go Azata for Favorable Magic
Make everything into Enchantment early
There should be a Staff in Act 1 for +1 to Willpower spells, also a Heaband of +2 CHA and Robe with extra spell pen, and Covenant of the Inheritor Relic at Act 2 start
But the reality is like any DC caster, spell DC gear is mostly Act 3 onwards, plenty for Enchantment however.
So the key early is to focus on AoE CC as usual, combine shit with Sleep like Color Spray & Hideous Laughter for no friendly fire circle targetting.
Once you get Slow it's much easier, Slow + Hold Person is golden, due to how many enemies you're hitting at once at least odds are you'll crowd control a few of them even on higher difficulties
You can also use Freezing Touch or whatever that level 2 touch cold spell is to force Staggered as that doesn't require a saving throw
Have Ember and Cam drop Evil Eye on a boss or powerful enemy before you cast for a -4 to -8 to their saves

Unfortunately Aeon is indeed rather subpar than Azata who can always force enemies to roll twice and pick worst result for ANY of your spells permanently, same for spell penetration checks.
Aeon has a Gaze for higher save but... it's much better on a fighter/mage type of character, not a pure DC caster.
Demon would have also been a better choice but Azata is by far the best for MD
Also, Azata gets a unique buff to stats that MD can further abuse by going the Chronomancer route, because you can cast it way more often, including another unique spell that refreshes ability uses + spellbooks and that shit just loops back and forth with Chrono MD which is hilarious and reminds me of good old days of BG2 with Project Image and spell clones
