why do steam games still use xbox face buttons as the default even though xbox is dead
>>
>>738760239
because it's intuitive for people whose language reads left to right

your language does that, right anon?

You mean, Sega's face buttons, zoomer?
>>
cheeto dust would destroy that in milliseconds
>>
because of xinput
>>
Backwards compatibility is important. Not all games have remapping, sadly, so control schemes when playing older games would be unintuitive because of the switch in placement.
Wanting to be different for no reason is faggotry, Valve doesn't tend to care about this over widespread support.

PC gaming is Microsoft owned

This is such gimmicky stupid bullshit. Why not just have a small button somewhere that changes the layout/lights instead? Or make it a double tab of one of tghe already there buttons.

Autism. If my bindings don't match my buttons it bothers me a lot.

The confirm button goes on the bottom. It's the first button, the first letter, the first place your thumb goes. It's the foundational button. You move your thumb from A to B or to X and Y. It is the universal action button, it's where jump defaults to, if a game only needed one button it's going to use A. Only Japanese insanity could decide on making the cancel button your main button. Sega got the hardware layout right but all of their games just did their own thing anyways. Fuck it C is jump now, fuck it every button is jump, lol lmao

In an alternate nightmare timeline, sure. Thankfully we live in a reality where Microsoft being greedy incompetent retards killed their iteration of PC gaming, and then Steam sprung from its rotting corpse like a Greek deity.

because it's the default from inertia, one of the only things xbox 'won' with.

Do something on your PC that requires confirmation. Is the Ok / Continue / Confirm button on the right or the left?

If answering a Yes / No question, is the Yes on the bottom or the top?

When driving a car, is the gas pedal on the left, middle, or right?

When flipping a light switch, which direction is On?
>>

what are you talking about?
99% games are still made for windows
MS retardation in ruining W11 is real, sure, but that literally hasn't had any significant impact on gaming whatsoever, even with all the recent increased popularity of linux gaming distros and steamOS, linux gaming is still only 3-4% of the total.
Literally 100% of games released on steam are made for Windows PCs

Some controllers use magnetic caps that can be switched around. The problem is, this makes the buttons heavier and louder. It's also just not worth the effort to re-arrange things all the time. The best solution is to stop looking at the controller like a retard.
>>
>>738760239
I'm pretty sure the SEGA layout on PC predates the Xbox with stuff like the SideWinder, maybe even further. Changing the layout now when nearly every single PC game with controller support uses the Sega layout is retarded.
>>
>>738767425
Dual pole lightswitches generally aren't used in rooms, but in hallways. That way you can turn the light off without having to walk back to the other end of the hall. Rooms tend to be smaller and as such this is not an issue.
>>
The 360 controller was so ubiquitous during the rise of Steam that it became the default PC controller layout.
>>

I was a playstation guy and I haven't had one for the past decade, but no matter what controller I'm using it's always going to be ecks, circle, square and triangle

do people look at the face buttons when playing
isn't the only thing that matters is the button prompts in the game itself

a microcontroller is way cheaper than that and your gamepad already has at least one anyway
>>
It's actually the dreamcast layout.
Nintendo's double backwards layout is dumb
If anything the buttons should be N(orth) E(ast) S(outh) W(east)

>>
>>738771856
>Is there
>>
>>738771885
I get it's more universal, but I think it looks ugly and is severely dependent on games recognizing and correcting the layout of your controller to a universal standard.
>>
>>738771979
hence the hope
i dont really think it looks ugly but also it has problem of controller input apis and controller themselves flipping the button depending on the mode-that you really cannot really know the physical placement of the button-there is always some ambiguity with many 3rd party controllers and its selected compatibility modes
it is kinda chaotic even on steam deck, which is grim tb h
>>
>>738760239

It's SEGA's layout. You can kill the company but not the idea
>>
>>738771765
I rather playstation icons became the default icons. Shapes are just better than all the shitty swappable lettering
>>
>>738760239
I still don't understand why more multiplat games don't have an option to directly change the button icons in the options menu.
Modern Capcom games uses this now, but other games are still stuck on relying on the game itself to detect what controllers you use, which can be janky if you use a third party controller or sometimes Steam just decides to make your controller an Xbox controller since it's the default option even though I'm using a PS5 controller.
>>
>>738775541
This jesus just let us choose and give us the option to force controller icons to stay when using mix controls. Holy fuck it cant be that hard of an request.
>>
>>738760239
The Xbox (aka Dreamcast) layout is simply better. Deal with it. And I say this as someone who prefers Nintendo platforms.

Is this designed for retards that have to look at their controller when they play a game? I've gotten used to having to flip-flop between the Xbox/PS style controller icons, I don't think it warrants some weird feature like this that adds some probably uncomfortable groove to the controller grip.
>>
>>738776032
you genuinely don't understand how stupid the average person it
>>
>>738765993
The problem is that in Japan they mark things that are "correct" or whatever with an O, so O being the confirm button isn't really weird, with Nintendo though they're really retarded for their A/B X/Y placements, For PS though I really don't think they needed to change the default confirm to X overseas.
>>
>>738776131
I know people are retarded but even this seems like such a stretch to me, I guess it's no different than people that have to look at their keyboards but it feels more depressing hearing about it with a controller specifically designed for you to comfortably hold and manipulate it.

And that's why confirm goes on the right button.

>option to directly change the button icons in the options menu.
>Modern Capcom games uses this now
And even they half ass it. For example Pragmata released on Switch but the PC release doesn't have Switch icons as an option at all. It took them more effort to pick and choose which ones to include, than it would've been to add all of the sets they made.
Even MH Rise, which started as a Switch game, the "Switch" controller graphics setting on PC still uses Xbox's LB/LT instead of the L/ZL that they had ready

xinput - it's the default API for Windows (and Xbox), Windows is still the default platform for PC games and Xbox is still not dead (yet).
Most games are multiplatform and have to cater to the lowest common denominator - xinput.
Some games do support Sony's implementation, but only if you connect your controller with a cable, otherwise they fall back on xinput.
Even fewer games support the Dualsense over Bluetooth as well, I think BeamNG.drive and Pragmata do.

In my ideal world all games that have a PS5 and PC version should support Dualsense on PC.
And all PS5/Xbox games that have a PC port should support mouse and keyboard on consoles too.
The work is already done, the only excuse is artificial segmentation and developer laziness.

Also as of last year microsoft no longer recommends xinput for games. Took them long enough considering they introduced Gameinput on xbox back in 2018
