All the extra "story" (aka banal dialogue to skip through), the casualization of the singleplayer campaign by making tms unlimited and gym leaders have small weak teams, the linearity, the lack of puzzles or interesting dungeons, the hideous stretching sprites, the new ugly monsters including 50 new legendaries (each one less memorable than the last), the soulless tacked on features like PWT or Pokestudios. New items like the shiny charm that encourage grinding. Horrible stinking dog shit top to bottom with no redeeming features whatsoever. And since online multiplayer was now the be all end all there was no reason to replay the game ever (not that anyone would want to)

it's tough because every era(except the 3DS) are good at specific things. the GB games had generally the best world design despite the lackluster type and stat implementations. the DS games are much better mechanically, but the world design isn't as good. The 3DS games are just stinky, and the switch games have really good PVP, at the cost of basically everything else.

if you're just a casual pokemon fan, the second they went full 3D is when the games fell off for sure. tougher answer if you like pvp

Overall Ruby/Saphire felt like a massive downgrade. I did play a bit of Pearl/Diamond and Sun/Moon but dropped off. Didn't bother with any other game.

Recently I eventually play Scarlet/Violet because, on paper, it was basically how I imagined how pokemon should be as a child.
I *almost* enjoyed it as I did Gen 1 and 2, with the major issues being the uglyass artstyle and the tons of talking, tutorials and messages, specially in the early game.

XY was boring and could have really used used a Z
Omega Ruby pissed me off so much it's the only game where I didn't even bother to refight the elite four and soured me on gen6 and all future titles completely. I pirated moon and that's the end of it.

They just didn't seem to be able to fully realize what they were attempting to accomplish and it was never given its full development time like the other gens were with their third versions. They were working on new hardware in 3D for the first time, made the campaign end up lackluster.
I believe all that is true for XY. But once Ohmori got behind the wheel that all went out the window. That nigga doesn't give a shit about the game he just wants to relive his childhood trauma.

I wasn't fed anything. Even at the time it released when I thought XY was putrid shit and it could never get worse than this I could see they just left some things unfinished, most blatantly being the things relating to the gen's mythicals. There were probably going to be events for them like previous games around the power plant and that big ass pink crystal that's pointed out to you then does nothing, but it never ended up happening.
It was only backed up by seeing files in the teraleak where much more of the map was considered, but was too much to properly implement.
They wanted you to be able to ride pokemon, but ended up having to settle for only having a couple set ones (gogoat, mamoswine). They attempted to further develop the battle mechanics with megas before Ohmori settled on a battle gimmick of the gen formula. They implemented the best online in the series with the PSS and the brilliant wondertrade. Berry growing was made into more of a legitimate farming thing. Plenty of minigames with amie and super training. I genuinely believe there was somewhere they wanted to go with this game, and were just unable to.
It's a far cry from further entries where everything seems so shallow and done just because they have to. No whimsy, no adventure, no dungeons, nothing. The moment they handed the series to Ohmori was the moment it died.
