What is the best version of RuneScape to play?

I wanna get back into it but it seems like people hate RuneScape 3? OSRS is the go to choice?

What about RSPS do people still do those? I saw 2004scape and it looks extremely kino.

anyone?

RS3 has been enshittified by over 15 years of bad decisions, predatory microtransactions, gambling, pay2win, cosmetic shit, and underneath all of that bullshit is a game with 25 years of feature creep, multiple failed attempts at modernization, and a fundamental lack of vision and direction for their product.
HOWEVER, since around the start of the year, RS3 has begun a major effort to rehabilitate its image, purge all of the horrible bullshit infesting it, and work on the fundamentals of the game. You can read about it here if you're interested (the most important thing is that the predatory microtransactions that have infested the game since 2012 are gone)

Old School is vastly more popular for good reason. It is the game you remember playing as a kid, if it had committed to that vision into the modern day instead of trying to be like other MMOs and bleed its playerbase dry for its shareholders.
You almost certainly want to try OSRS, but your subscription pays for both games, so it's not like you have to actually pick one or the other beyond how you want to commit your time.

What do you want to play.
Why.
Do that, think for yourself anon

osrs is only played by trannies and 3rd worlders who live off selling gold

The only benefit RS3 had was that it shat out the stupid keys at you that made progression crazy fast so you could endgame and quickly get to the stuff you probably didn't see all of back in the day, but that's gone now so it's the same grind as OSRS except with gross art, dogshit quests and writing, a horrible half-baked combat system they never properly implemented and no players. There's a reason it's numbers aren't recovering.

Holy shit that's grim, I expected at least some bump in January.

I've played OSRS off and on for many years and I'm just finally getting into end game content after a 3 year break. I highly recommend it. Find a chill clan to join. Running group PvM & skilling minigames isn't just more efficient with a smaller group, it's also a bit more fun when it's a bunch of friends/acquaintances.

The game has recieved a lot of QoL over the years and RuneLite is its own QoL on top of that. One of my favorite things about OSRS is that unlike other MMOs that have been optimized and high-browed to death, people actually engage with unoptimized content in this game. Some of it is genuinely just dead, but most of it isn't. You create your own goals and also your own path to them.

Personally, I recommend just giving f2p a shot. When I came back, I didn't know if I'd end up staying or falling off again, so I went back to playing f2p for a few weeks to see how I'd feel. They even just added a new f2p boss this year that drops new f2p best in slot gear. Although 95% of the content is behind membership, f2p is a great way to dip your toes again.

My only suggestion I have is utilize quest rewards to skip as much early skilling as you can. The game vastly opens up when you get past the early-game

I'll just play both I guess. Like you said if both are covered there's no reason not to.

Next question. Is ironman something I should do? I've seen videos on it - and it looks cool but I should probably just play a regular account right?

Ironman mode is cool and interesting and probably makes some aspects of the game like progression objectively better (earning an Amulet of Glory by actually doing the skilling grind to make or get it yourself is infinitely more satisfying than just buying one off the GE for 10k) but in other ways it also kind of fucking sucks and you're just making things harder for yourself. A lot of ironman gameplay is always going to be doing your chores no matter how much Jagex makes the game easier for them. Going 5x dry for a critical point of progression and having absolutely no recourse because you can't just buy it from someone, or getting a very valuable dupe drop that is completely worthless to you because you can't sell it on the market and leverage the gold to progress your account, does not sound fun to me.
I would not recommend anyone play an ironman who doesn't already have a main. And the other gimmick accounts aren't any better, Hardcore Ironman is just waiting to die to a disconnect/server lag or one careless mistake over thousands of hours of gameplay, and Ultimate Ironman is certifiable mental illness

rs3 ironman is pretty good
all of the microtransaction stuff people talk about and all of the bullshit stuff is and has never been allowed in that game mode.
but the game has a lot of fucking dailies, which really is a fucking chore
it has lots of cool stuff you can do, fun, interesting, and varied bosses, lots of ways to change how you play and how you approach encounters, and millions of ways to progress.
they are looking to get rid of the dailies and fix up some of the other awkwardness caused by their removal, but that is still an ongoing thing. It's going in the right direction

osrs is kind of the opposite where you can play any mode and it will be fine
and it is a very consistent and fun game to play
but its so fucking scared to do anything new, skills outside of combat skills are basically worthless and you only do them for quests, every unlock is tradeable so its just better to buy the thing cheaply instead of actually getting the skill level for it, people sell at a loss because they use them for training. Sure if you play ironman this isn't an issue, but so much of the simply isn't designed around it and you have exploit bugs and abuse certain things to be able to do what was mid-level content, its only the newer stuff that actually function as intended.
and combat skills are still fucked up
the moment you get 70 in the stat you can equip effectively the best gear in the game that is ridiculously cheap, sure you can get stuff that is 2% stronger for millions of gold, but its irrelevant and bosses are not designed around you having anything stronger. The only things that are stronger are the 3 "mega rare" weapons which are billions of gold and only like <1% of the players have them.
They thankfully have also realized this is an issue and are being less retarded with actually making better gear but they are still hampered by the hard caps they implemented before and the core mechanics

Ironman doesn't enable you to do anything that a regular account can't. If you have the self-control to not skip most of the game by buying your gear off of the grand exchange, there's no reason not to play a regular account
>>
I’m curious on oldfags thought on sailing skill becoming real after years of memes and jokes
>>
>>738774229
I love it and I thought it should have been added to the game the first time they polled it. It ties in perfectly with the game world, feeding into the rest of the skills and providing an entirely new aspect of gameplay that fuels exploration/travel, combat, and questing

there are burnout grinds on both RS3 and osrs if you want to do endgame content on iron. From what I understand the bowfa grind in osrs is pretty brutal but I know that upkeep in RS3 is crazy. But its more about the journey then the destination.
