No, it doesn't deserve hate. There are parts of it that feel dated and have not aged well, but that's to be expected of a ~40 year old NES RPG.

I enjoyed it
Playing a lot of nes rpgs makes you tolerate it and appreciate it
And I'm saying this who didn't grew up with the system
There is that romhack remake coming next month which I'll be trying out

I can see the combat grinding down on people, but as someone who moved to this from Nethack and Wizardry Mother 1 actually felt pretty forgiving.
