Imo dark souls 2 was designed to be a sequel to demon souls not ds1, the penalties upon death reducing the player's health is a mechanic from DeS, vendrick the king in ds2 has more in common with Allant, both are disillusioned royals, you can fight both of their carcasses, you can talk to them, the lost bastille seems to be inspired by the prison of hope, the iron keep is probably what they wanted to make in DeS with the dragon area that was cut short
