PS2 to PS3 had insane leaps in terms of polygon count, texture resolution, render resolution and a million other things that had nothing to do with lighting. If anything lighting was the one thing that took a hit in the PS360 era compared to PS2/Gamecube because back then you still had a lot of prerendered backgrounds which resolved a much better image than real time lighting which was kind of shitty at the time

I'm one of those people who think we'd be in the golden age of gaming if publishers stopped dropping hundreds of billions of cash on graphics and instead released games that just look good, but with much more effort put into gameplay and world design. Plus it would mean development times measured in a couple of years rather than decades, and 1-digit GB install sizes rather than 3-digit

You're being extremely dishonest. Nobody would ever confuse any 3D PSX/N64 game for anything future gen because the leap in technology is so far advanced. Plenty of people could realistically mistake the best of that generation for PS3/XBox One games. This is the same generation that Nintendo decided to step out of the polygon arms race. That's not coincidental.

This is obviously false, just the render resolution alone would be enough to make the difference obvious and that wasn't even the biggest improvement. If nobody could notice the difference between SD and HD content there wouldn't have been universal and fast adoption of HD displays(which were extremely expensive at the time). But the internet was around back then, if you have evidence of people being unable to tell the difference between PS2 and PS3 graphics I'd love to see it

By whateve criteria the PS2 launch games blew Vagrant Story out of the water, the PS3 launch games also blew everything on the PS2 out of the water. There was nothing on the PS2 that looked remotely close to being in the same universe as Motorstorm on a technical level.
