You know why Geoff Keighley always has to put a bunch of random garbage at his shows? The reality of the matter is E3 made sense as an industry event, not just as a "lmao advertise to gamers" holy week, when publishers were shitting out 5-10 games a year. Now Activision shows up as part of Xbox to show off this year's Call of Duty, and maybe some random Blizzard expansion thing. That's all Activision does these days.Game development also takes a long ass time. Anybody will remember when for like 2-3 years Sony literally showed the same four fucking games at every conference east and west because they were taking forever to come out.So what would be the honest point of E3 in 2026 for any serious publisher, e.g. everybody who has enough clout to not bother with the Dorito Pope tax? Temporarily derail game development to produce a trailer or vertical slice for an arbitrary date. There aren't enough games being made by big publishers to warrant E3. And games aren't coming out fast enough to need a big one hour sizzle reel.Even Nintendo who pioneered the Direct format, literally not a few days ago just randomly dropped a new Star Fox game announcement. They've been de-emphasizing directs in favor of a tighter "reveal-to-release" pipeline.It was fun to have a little whimsy, a week or so when /v/ could actually care about video games, actual real fucking video games, instead of inane grievances, and have things to be excited for. But there is no real reason to have the infrastructure for something like E3 in place anymore. Circling back to Dorito look at how much he charges just for a minute of airtime. Hundreds of thousands of dollars for longer trailers. That shit could pay for multiple actual developers and artists and stuff.
