Feels like I'm the only person waiting for this thing, while the controller and gabe cube get a lot of attention. Why is that, is VR that dead?
Nobody cares because VR has no gaems
>>738818301>is VR that dead?Yes
>>738818301I'm waiting for the Steam Frame too.
>>738818301>Why is that, is VR that dead? There's only two (2, three [3] if we're being generous) VR titles and they came out a decade ago:-SuperHot VR (which can be played Flat/"SuperHot")-Beat Saber. That's it. BEING generous and giving a third title:-Half Life: AlyxThat's like... 6 years ago.I'm interested in it since it'll not need the 4 room sensors that the Vive/Index needed, but VR's been dead and buried for a while and unless you play "flat" shit on it like Euro Truck Simulator, there is VERY little reason to have one.
VR is dead enough that Valve had to add the gimmick of the Frame also being a ghetto PC.I still use my Quest 2 with my PC, so I have no real incentive to upgrade. Gabe Cube still holds interest since I'd like a tiny-ass PC for my office space that can do some adequate gaming with what I play.
>>738818301I don't care about the steam frame itself. I already have a Q3. What I do care about is this will improve VR compatibility on Linux, and improve Steam VR.
>>738818301I am, specifically because digging my Index out and getting it working is such a chore because I cannot commit to a wall wart, two USB slots, and the DP cable being in all the time.
>>738818482You're not wrong. But a new device in the market will give pushes for new VR games. Given how autistic Steamies are, this will sell out, so there will be demand for new ones.
>>738818301I'm really interested in how this thing is going to perform standalone.
I don't have any money and they dont ship to my country anyway so it's no use, hopefully I get some job this year and I'm gonna buy the frame and the gabecube when someone resells it.
>>738818301In a market where quality meta headsets are less than $500, I don't see the frame selling well at all when it's rumoured to be $1000 bare minimum. Massively overpriced. Valve lost the VR market.
As someone actually interested, I'm cautiously optimistic that this will be the start of HMDs that don't immediately go full retard and don't rely on a library of overpriced shitware because the developers think that people with VR headsets aren't discerning or rational with their finances.
>>738818726Oh nevermind, shit's already fucked, damn, at least Valve is patching the hole with flatscreen applications.
>>738818726>But a new device in the market will give pushes for new VR games.People still bitch about $300 as far too much for a standalone VR headset. A $1k device won't do shit in that regard.
>>738818482>There's only two (2, three [3] if we're being generous) VR titles and they came out a decade ago:What sucks is all the shit people would probably play in VR, are walled off between Meta and PSVR2.
>>738819096I think the angle volvo is going for is that you can still play your normal games with it on a virtual display anywhere you want like a steam deck
>>738818980Steamies paid the $1000+ fee for the Index back then. Just don't ask them how many times they've used it in total, or they'll get mad.
>>738818482There has to be more than that..
>>738818301I already have a BSB2 and I have a big ass head with 73 IPD. BSB2 is the only one that can get wide enough. I also don't want wireless bitrate bullshit.
>>738819234Fully willing to say that Valve profoundly fumbled the steamvr ecosystem dumb dumb.
>>738819234The thing is the Index was actually the best VR headset when it came out. It was unironically worth the price *at the time*. Nowadays there's plenty of high quality and budget options, you'd be retarded to spend a grand on the Index. And Valve never lowered the price of the Index even once lmao
It's the only one of the three I might consider buying. Not too likely though, because I already have Quest 3, I might wait for the next iteration that hopefully is powerful enough to run VR games standalone, and has better passthrough. If I got one it would be out of my dislike for Meta, partially.>>738818541Have you tried WiVRn? It uses Monado, which unlike ALVR, doesn't use SteamVR. I couldn't get HL2:VR mod working because it was 32 bit (although that may have since been fixed), but Subnautica VR ran nicely, and I was able to get it to work in Unreal Engine on Linux.Way better than the constant issues I had with ALVR (which were SteamVR's fault).
You are, VR sucks for anything but sim racing and porn, and this headset is not a massive upgrade from whatever headset you already own.I don't think they'd sell that many of these even if they announced today that HL3 is a steam frame exclusive launch title.
>>738818301>vr is actually dead?Yes! It is now. Extremely dead. VR first died when the Quest 2 came out, now it has died again with the AI hype cycle. If you missed out on VR before the quest came out (around the time everyone was calling it an expensive gimmick or whatever) you’ve truly and actually missed out on some of the comfiest, pre industry bullshit times to be in gaming ever. It was like when the ps2 first came out. Now everyone’s just making mobile games to try and copy gorilla tag’s success, it’s finally and truly over.>t. Based 2016 riftfag
What about things that aren't games like usual, like something where you paint virtually, or some space or under water exporation thing
>>738818301You are not alone, but I'm afraid the price will be as retarded as for gay cube.
>>738818301Nope. I'm looking forward to it too. I want to get away from the Oculus 3.
>>738819814>paint virtuallyTilt Brush. If it doesn't still work there's Open Brush.>under water exploration thingThere's probably something like that, alternatively you could play the community VR mod for Subnautica (the official one only supported gamepad and I remember needing a keyboard to enter door codes).I think Lone Echo 1 and 2 were good VR space games.
>>738819814>paint virtuallyhttps://store.steampowered.com/app/1608400/Vermillion__VR_Painting/This game is cool because it has multiplayer as well but I think the killer feature is that it can run as a steamvr overlay. You keep the 3D effect in the "background" so it's very unique in that sense.
>>738818301>I'm going to have to fight for an order again
>>738821091They will 100% do the reservation thing again
>>738820649you can paint and have sex in vrchat
>>738819276There is, he's just retarded. However almost all of it is exclusive to the quest standalone market. Nobody else bothered to make games for vr and meta intentionally pushed for exclusivity. There's even an entire complete assassin's creed game for vr.
>>738821147>I'm going to have to fight for a reservation
>>738821207Valve making buyers fight for their order in the Underdome would really cut down on scalpers.
>>738818301>Why is that, is VR that dead?Because most people don't have space for VR. To have a good experience for VR, you need SPACE. Not studio apartment space. Like a 2 Bedroom space where one room is dedicated for VR gaming. Once you're pass those economic hardships, most people play games to relax. Not to put on a headset and move around. We want to be couch potatoes. I still love Half Life: Alyx and The Wizards. But, most people can't. Until you can convince the populace to do brain chip implants so we can get a Sword Art Online type experience (you know without the horror of being trapped in a world while your body deteriorates in a hospital bed). Most people just don't care or have the means to care.
>>738821545I still feel like the whole spatial awareness thing is a skill issue. Sure maybe in the first few weeks I hit a couple of walls in action games but that hasn't happened to me in years and I played bonelab coop with my wife just last week. You eventually just learn to keep a position in space.
>>738821758I feel like you can't debate. It's way more fun to move around in VR than use the joysticks and "move". At that point, just get a big monitor that fills your field of view and play with a gamepad in hand.
>>738821918I wasn't debating, notice how I didn't say anything to directly refute your argument. It's almost like I wasn't even disagreeing with you. Dumb autist.
>>738818301I want it to trash my Quest 2.I need to replay Alyx and cockpit games are still the most fun you can have with vidya.
You're not. This is perhaps the most desired one of the three>Controller - Great (just got mine, first day using it) lower priced v other two, but despite its unique controller features its still a gamepad. Desire outstripped supply and player interest, Valve is pushing far more and has changed the checkout because of it and will be fulfilling for awhile. Least affected by hardware shortage>GabeCube Not of interest to me. Conceptually its neat and I think its great for those who need a set top box and/or used to play on console, but as someone who is strongly in the open PC camp preferable I have self-built main rigs and can build ITX or other HTPC if necessary that offer more variation. Price may be significant with the shortage thanks to shitfuck RAM >FrameOf great interest to me, as an Index owner. Frame has some advances and wireless VR capability (though I still wish they would have retained a wired option) and though I would have easily gone for a no compromises "pro" version, the Frame is the only non-shit VR headset that competes with Meta's surveillance nightmare. Frame runs SteamOS distro Linux and you can run locally on ARM64, or connect it to a x64 PC wirelessly etc- that alone is reason for me to give them cash along with the upgraded pancake lenses, wireless and other features. Shortage will impact the LPDDR5 necessary for this but its slightly different fab as its similar to mobile hardware so maybe less of a problem. Aside from the Frame the only other headset in which I'm interested is one of those $5K+ Varjo XR-4 Focal HMDs that's basically made for military sim training or drone pilot use, but I've not been able to justify it so far
>>738818301Its doomed to be more niche. For some reason only a fraction of people can even play VR games without their head reacting badly to it, even with the adjustment period factored in.
>>738818482nah, Wipeout Omega Collection and GT7 are awesome but stuck on playstation
This saved VR for me20+ hours in a few days
>>738818301VR is pretty niche nowadays and that's fine, everybody expecting it to become the standard way of play back in the day were fucking morons.
>>738824453The thing that saved VR for me is porn. It's hard to go back to normal porn
I'm going to buy cause I want a screen attached to my face so I can lay in bed and post on 4chan with a steam controller
>>738821918At some point you need to adjust so I don't really see why joystick movement is bad.
>>738821207old accounts get priority
>>738824436VR will forever be cucked because of shit like thistoo many VR games stuck in random VR ecosystems, even PSVR2 doesn't support PSVR1 games, that shit is fucking embarrassing
>>738818301>Valve confirmed they're not making VR game for thisYou'd think they would try to get people in, dangling them with another killer app like Alyx was with Index. Though I guess they got their captive audience for this already.
>>738819204There's really nothing on either on those platforms.Just get yourself a second hand PSVR1 and a PS4 with an outdated Firmware so you can jailbreak it, and run Summer Lesson and nude modded DOAX3 Fortune, and you're good to go.
>>738818301>inside-out tracking>asymmetric controllers for VR>no hand strapsFrame is dead on arrival. Just buy an Index.
>>738829004Wired was and still is a compromise,
