"The Treasure game history is a rich tapestry. But, since we're all gonna die, there's one more secret I feel I have to share with you: I did not care for Radiant Silvergun."
"What?"
"Did not care for Radiant Silvergun."
"How can you even say that, Anon?"
"Didn't like it."
"Anon, it's like the perfect game!"
"This is what everyone always said. Whenever they say..."
"Hiroshi Iuchi, Hitoshi Sakimoto, I mean, you never see, Studio Gonzo!"
"Fine. Fine. Fine team, did not like the game."
"Why not?"
"Did not... Couldn't get into it."
"What didn't you like about it?"
"It insists upon itself."
"What?"
"It insists upon itself."
"What does that even mean?"
"Because it has a valid point to make, it's insisted!"
"It takes forever memorizing the scoring route; you spend like six and a half hours on Stage 3... You know, I can't get through, I've never even finished the game. I've never seen the ending."
"You've never seen the ending?!"
"How can you say you don't like it if you haven't even given it a chance?"
"I agree. It's not really fair."
"It's outrageous."
"I have tried on three separate occasions to get through it, and I get to Stage 5."
"Yeah, it's a great stage. I love that stage."
"I have no idea what they're talking about. It's like they're speaking a different lang... You know, that's where I lose interest in it."
"You know what, Anon..."
"They're speaking Japanese!"
"The language they're speaking is a language of subtlety; something you don't understand."
"I love Cotton Boomerang. That is my answer to that statement."
"Exactly."
"Well, there you go."

Anon "figuring them out" is not the problem. They're easy to figure out, the brownesf favela monkey can. The problem is hundreds, if not thousands are also "figuring them out" and are competing with you to be on top. It's a constant struggle to stay on top of the meta, because if you don't, you will eat shit and fall down the ladder. That's when video games become a second job, and maybe that works for the lazy neets on 4chan and other shitholes, but for people with actual jobs, it's far too much. I actually can't think of another task that is physically and mentally more stressful and taxing than being good at fighting games. Besides, there are only a handful of good fighting games, and I've already moved on from them. You should to.

As said before I used the special extend strategy here. I think it's easier to chain medals into stage 4 than it is to just ignore scoring and fight Discharge raw. You don't really need to worry about rank in this game unless you're vacuuming up power ups for no reason or fighting extra bosses. Medaling isn't very hard once you get used to the idea that a medal can drop off the screen as long as all of them don't drop at once, the chain restores to the highest value medal you last picked up even if it resets. The biggest issue in this game is the bullets are pretty much fucking invisible and enemies with happily throw them out right in your face, so I pretty much try to keep tapping around constantly since everything is aimed. When you're labbing the stages pay attention to where ground enemies are spitting out bullets and try to go underneath or above those areas instead of horizontally because it's really easy to just slam into a bullet that get thrown right into your face. Shorty is great for survival because she eliminates bosses so damn fast compared to everyone else, and her powerful homing shots let you do stuff like sit on top of tanks and sealing them in stage 6 while busting turrets. I used the B type ship because the extra speed helps clutch out medals in bad situations, C is fine too but I don't really think the extra shot damage makes any difference. Normally Discharge is a huge wall but I find him pretty easy with this set up. I've played this game on the past and went into it kinda feeling like I wouldnt like it anymore, but routing out the medaling actually made it a lot of fun. If I went back to this I'd like to try Carpet for scoring or maybe a team and try to tackle extra bosses, but obviously not a good idea for a survival clear.

Also as a weird aside, spending some time on psikyo games was surprisingly helpful. I dunno, make of that what you will.

Insane falseflagging.

Ginga Force is decent for "modern" style gamers because you can grind levels to get more lives, similar to ZeroRanger, as well as unlock stronger weapons. The game is played through a stage select instead of one long run so you don't have to commit to a full 40 minute playthrough.

Strikers 1 and 2, Sengoku Blade, and Gunbird 2 in particular have really unique rosters that can change how the games are played, and are fun to play as too.

How would you compare playing a solo ship vs picking 3 different ones? Is the latter just outright harder, especially due to being able to fight more secret bosses? I'm assuming it's more for the novelty of facing said bosses.

Always meant to pick up Psykio games on steam but they recently all got delisted. Luckily they're back now under a new publisher I think but that also means that the steep discounts the games used to get for being on the store for years already aren't gonna happen any time soon.

I think you've confused me with someone else who recited information without any editorializing.
Specifically talking about the two things mentioned: Grazing typically isn't a very fun mechanic. I want to get as far away from bullets as possible, not stay pretty close to them but not too close. Shikigami no Shiro is another game that heavily relies on grazing, and I hated it there where I'd want to ride a single bullet all the way across the screen because it was just so much better than not intentionally grazing.
It's definitely weird to have a resource for shields. ESP Galuda has something kind of similar where you have a button that puts a shield up, but that still ends in an attack. It feels more like panic bombing where you use an attack specifically because it's invincible to something that would probably have hit you.

nta but
That's the thing about these kind of games, I'm really not the kind of player that improves much by playing them over and over.
Even if I *COULD* get really good at them by playing them over and over, I do not have nearly the patience for do to so and would rather just play something from a different genre in which the default assumption of the gameplay loop doesn't involve seeing the game over screen every three minutes.

"Repetition" is a part of all real games. In modern "games" the whole thing is just a tutorial from start to finish instead, the game ends before you get to even play it for real. I'd rather play 20 minutes of a real game for 20 hours than a 20 hour long tutorial that ends when the credits roll.

It plays good on the actual ps2. As long as your ps2 can read cds cause it's a cd game not a dvd one. Great game and great soundtrack but the final couple stages are super hard. Actually I take that back pretty much the whole game is brutal. I think level 2 ends with a friggin boss rush... Usually devs save that kinda shit for later but treasure goes all out. I wish Konami gave a shit about it and ported it off the ps2 onto the pc and switch but alas.

Shmups and rhythm games are my default genre when I don't know what to play and want to play for an hour or two
Shmups are even fine for when I work from home (even if in that case I kinda prefer other genres where pausing and coming back 5 minutes later isn't the exact same as dying)
Started playing this one the other day, it's not groundbreaking but I dig the aesthetic and the levels and bosses patterns are nice (It's a bit on the easier side, you have some purposefully unavoidable bs that is meant for you to use your "delete everything" button, but I don't mind it)

Thoughts on Senjin Aleste?]
I think it's kind of a weird game, I feel like it's absolutely hard as balls and there are loads of boss patterns that I just absolutely cannot dodge but ultimately the game is fairly "easy" because it gives you fuck tons of invulnerability windows and as long as they're decently spaced out you can take like 20+ hits in a run.
>>
>>738857126

I ""1cc'd"" it on Casual with 5000 deaths but it's legal as long as you don't lose all 4 ships in a short span. It feels great on PC for me, do you have a gsync/freesync monitor? If not, try forcing vsync off in GPU settings for the exe.

From what I understand about the scoring system, there are 4 medal tiers and you go up to tier 2 at 500 medal counter and then tier 3 at 750 I think, but that's as high as it goes. Medals only drop when you're in power up, they cancel off killed enemy bullets kind of like espgaluda. If you kill an enemy point blank it'll drop the next tier of medals instead, which means you can only get tier 4 medals from point blanking with your counter at tier 3. Your medal counter gets halved when you exit power up and outside of power up it slowly drains. There also seems to be a rank system in the top right which adds a scoring multiplier but getting hit probably reduces or zeroes it.

I'm working on a translation for it, I have no idea where I'd post the files though since this is all pirate shit for a still currently available game
>>
>>738875058
You honestly can, the struggle of completing the game is the story, which is why a theme often found in shmups is resolve and self-sacrifice. Plots are a dime a dozen, a well told story is what's rare and valuable, and in that regard I'd take a boring plot told well over wacky wiki bait told badly. The primary aesthetic in games is gameplay.
>>
>>738875213
I have a regular monitor but I'll try changing GPU level vsync settings for the game. I kinda gave up on it after failing to find anything vsync/latency related in the configs
>>
>>738873229
Another tragic thing, there are actually english versions of a bunch of the data in the files, but they all still have the Japanese text. That means early on there were probably plans to release this internationally but they fell through.

I think it'll probably get a console release eventually, they probably didn't want to release it for home systems too soon since it's an arcade first game and needs to have its run there. It's been like 5 years though so if it's happening it'll probably be soon.

>People parroting Mork's video essay without understanding it.

The whole point of the gameplay density argument is that your game shouldn't be padded with useless fluff that exists only to prolong the play time. In this instance having an optional story exposition between levels isn't taking away your gameplay density, you would have the option to skip it entirely by just going straight to the next level, it only exists if you personally want to get more information on the story. If you wanted it to diminish your gameplay density then the story segments would be unskippable cutscenes during the levels themselves where you have to sit and watch people talk just to pad the run time.

A session might only take 30 mins but you need 500 sessions to work up the skill to finish one.

The hundreds of quarters that "everyone" spends getting to the point where they can 1CC.

>How the FUCK do you even make money off a shmup if [thing that is not actually happening]

It was an ez clear

Definitely worth it to go for it. It validates all your retroarch settings. You can go from the cab to the emulator and know what feels right. Also if you cant get it on cab but you can get it on keyboard all your clears will feel fraudulent

They don't. That's why they went extinct. Every play at my local shmup cab is a quarter for 20+ minutes. The rhythm games are 50 cents for a song or two.

For me it's the bongo rhythm titles

Fucking Big Core MK IV, favorite boss fight in ALL of Gradius and in my top 5 shmup bosses of all time.
