Knowing how the series has gone since then, it's probably not worth it. I haven't played it in like 10+ years, but I also distinctly remember Eternia being the best as well.

Destiny Director's Cut and Rebirth have a similar sprite style, couldn't remember offhand if the 3D parts are much better or worse in those, but before they got fan translations there was no other Tales game in English with the same art style. (I should've played them myself by now, but it's been a looong time since I played Eternia.)

I really recommend Phantasia PS1 version, which I did play. That was their third game, the first one that implements recipes and other standard features in the series. It's got the optional arena challenges, lots of endgame content, and a good story imo for jrpgs. Dhaos was one of the best villains in the genre.

Any of the 2D ones(including Symphonia which still handles battles on a 2D plane) are worth checking out. When they switched to full 3D combat, they were ruined. All the cool combo setups, gone. Magic? Useless, good lucking hitting anything with the cast times.
