Are there any good ones?
I tried Atom RPG and it genuinely sucked. It's obviously copying Fallout which is why I tried it to begin with, but outside of the UI/HUD design there were no similarities
The dialogue is overdescriptive. You get a 100 word paragraph describing what a character looks like, when you can literally see their portrait.
And the dev clearly has a smell fetish because he keeps describing how dirty/musky characters are.

Sorry I don't think this style of writing is any good

Depends on what you actually want from a CRPG.
In general, the ones listed already cover most things produced in the past decade that are at least above average
>Underrail
>Owlcat games
>Colony Ship

I'd also add Encased (just for the style and atmosphere) and BG3 (it's a decent, if a little basic, game, if you can ignore all the bear sex memes).

Tyranny and Tides of Numenera. They're both unfinished, and you shouldn't pay for them, but they're stupid fun and better than anything made by Owlcat or Larian.

I've finished both and I'd say only Tyranny is worth a playthrough, mostly due to the novelty of being an actual villain (at least at the start). Tides is basically just writers huffing their own farts in a room for 20 hours.
Comparing either of them to Owlcat or Larian games is just laughable.

I don’t know what you like but DOS2 is the best RPG ever made so might as well give that one a try.

I always bring up Tides of Numenera and Encased. Both are worthwhile.

I really enjoyed Sector Unknown.
>>
>>738845901
it's a game where Christianity is not portrayed in a comically bad way
the game is set on an xboxhuge generational spaceship that got taken over by a mutiny which of course made things really bad, with some sectors of the ship just straight up lost
you play as some shmuck from a shanty town made in the cargo bay trying to eke out a living as the life support systems gradually fail
>>
>>738845901
I thought the level design and exploration was genuinely cool. The game takes place after a big internal conflict that split the colony ship into a bunch of factions. So things like energy weapons are extremely rare, and when you find one it feels good.
You can also find cybernetic implants and the companions you bring along are interesting.
>>
>>738845852
Both are good, but in different ways.
Disco Elysium
>better story
>better writing
>better characters
>better music
Colony Ship
>better combat (DE has none)
>arguably more build variety
>more flexibility in choices and consequences
>more variety in endings
>dogshit story, writing and characters

I'd say they're both worth playing, but if you can only afford one, I'd pick Disco Elysium - it's definitely a more enjoyable experience out of the 2.
>>
>>738846486
Pick the game with no gameplay you say? Just a story and writer that is roughly equivalent to the better webnovel slop? Shan't be doing that fren.
>>
>>738846486
>>dogshit story, writing and characters
Really? I want my RPGs to have good writing
>>
Is Shadowrun Hong Kong good as a sinophile?
>>
>>738834754
Colony Ship to me is the best complete CRPG
I'd like to recommend DOS2, but the endings ruined the game for me.
>>
>>738845901
Colony Ship feels like a FO like game in that you're actually inside a dystopia but inside a colony ship.
The supposed mission pretty much died, all we have are 3 factions who hide behind some ideology but they're really the same underneath
the atmosphere is there, the worldbuilding is great (the ship citizens are practically illiterate from garbled and misunderstood history)
there is no romance
combat is tight, and i immediately wanted to do a solo run, but lack the time to pursue it
choices matter in some ways
but my ultimate favorite thing about Colony Ship is the bad end, which is the hardest to get
>>
>>738847027
>no gameplay
So any game where you don't kill anything doesn't have "gameplay"? That seems like a pretty narrow definition.
>>
>>738848145
How's the writing?
>>
How's Fallout Sonora compared to the modern crpgs it competes with?

>>
>>738835517
>>738837445
AoD is indeed terrible garbage.
Colony Ship is actually decent, you just need to play on the easy mode.
>>
>>738849667
Why
>>738847950
Act 3 is shit, too. Remember sven wanted 12 acts. The first three acts were chapter 1.
>>
>>738849359
It's kind of like Fallout functional but a bit more descriptive.
>Guess how I got this keycard
>Choices: spit it out already, so who did you have to kill to get that?, i don't really care
>Guy smirks, and explains that while other people were looking for the owner by name, he tracked him by the serial number of his gun. Guy is satisfied with his own methods.

I'm paraphrasing, but it's kind of like that. It's really not flowery like Owlcat games, and more like ordinary conversation.

The endings are cool payoffs.

>>738849763
I would put Colony Ship on Wasteland 2's level, maybe slightly better written and more atmospheric.
You just need to accept the unrealistic premise and a contrived conflict that basically would never happen among actual human beings.
>>
>>738834754
Any more about builds, gameplay, itemization and exploration over story?
>>
>>738834754
Baldur's Gate 3
>>
>>738850017
That's pretty good. Wl2 is killed by the slog of second half. Other than that it could've been 7 or 8 o' 10. Why play it on easy? That difficult? Does Cs has ng+?
>>
>>738850570
The dev has this weird obsession that people play RPGs to be a regular dude that can't do anything. So if you play on the "normal" difficulty and try to pick a fight with 2 thugs, you get fucking killed.
The easy mode is closer to normal in other games, in that it allows you to do things you couldn't do in real life.
>>
>>738850810
I hate that. This and pc is superhero is equally shit.
>>
>>738847475
>Really? I want my RPGs to have good writing

It’s not *dogshit*, that’s just /v/ hyperbole.

It’s more like… utilitarian. The writing does the job. Factions have coherent motivations, companions have arcs, choices get acknowledged in satisfying ways. But it’s not trying to be Disco-tier literary or emotionally introspective. No long inner monologues, no quirky metaphysical gimmicks. Mostly grounded, pragmatic dialogue between people trying to survive in a collapsing tin can.

If you want:
>tight reactive quests
>consequences that actually branch
>grounded, fallout-style exchanges
>minimal quip spam

you’ll probably be fine.

If you want:
>lyrical prose
>deep psychological character studies
>memorable quotable one-liners
>companions you fall in love with

it’s not that game.

Think “Fallout 1 but written by an engineer instead of a poet.” Whether that’s good or bad depends on what you’re in the mood for.
>>
>>738846486
>Disco Elysium
>better writing

Holy pseud.
>>
>>738853162
>It’s more like… utilitarian
The word you're looking for is "bland". Yes, it's not necessarily terrible, but very aggressively unremarkable. I could not for the life of me tell you the names of any character in that game, despite putting like 40-50 hours into it. I remember more characters and plot details from the OG Fallout, despite not touching that game for a good 15 years. For a genre where you're supposed to actually engage with the story, the characters and the world its set in, it's a pretty grievous sin, as far as I'm concerned.

>>738853475
Yes, it's better than Colony Ship. It's not exactly a high bar to measure against.
>>
>>738853162
I swear that post reads like chat gpt
>>
>>738855272
Colony Ship writing is fine, if unexciting.
Disco writing is actively bad. I dare you to post a single paragraph from that game that doesn't make you cringe when you read it.
>>
>>738855449
>Colony Ship writing is fine, if unexciting.
Colony Ship writing is actively boring, which is kind of a problem in a game genre where writing is one of the central pillars.

>Disco writing is actively bad. I dare you to post a single paragraph from that game that doesn't make you cringe when you read it.
I enjoyed that game and its writing enough to finish it twice, so obviously nothing in it is "making me cringe".
>>
>>738856375
Colony Ship writing is only boring if you lack the imagination to picture the things it's describing.
Also nice dodge, just pick some Disco screenshot that you believe contains good writing.

>One of your henchmen fucks a his friends wife while he is in a coma both he and the wife pretend nothing happened and that it is a good thing

>You deflower some teen same guys calls you a douchebag and the game treats it as something bad

Stupid as fuck writing.
>>
>>738857305
Anon, it's boring because the game itself lacks imagination in describing its story and characters. If it came out today, you'd be calling the dialogue in it "ai slop".
That does not mean that the game as a whole is bad, mind you, just that it could be so much better if the devs hired some who can actually write prose instead of having the software engineers do it.
>>
>>738858431
Waiting for that screenshot of good writing

There is magic and super high tech stuff.

The new update added magic 3 spells and one henchman comes with 1 spell.
>>
>>738867910
how hard is it to get it, is it super secret hidden or late game only or can you get it decently early i don't want to play as some oooga booga spear chucker instead of a spellcaster gentleman
>>
>>738865259
I played it at launch. Not bad and it was a fun mashup of Fallout and old IE games, but clearly unfinished and I didn't like the twist.

>>738867910
Actual magic or more crystals style stuff?

>>738834754
Black Geyser is decent if you like BG1, don't bother if you're expecting BG2 thougbeit

You get three words of power healing fire and wind (the best). The best spell is having a full party though rushing henchmen and respeccing them to not be shit.

Daggers and bows are still the best weapons.

Underrail is pretty much the only good modern successor to classic Fallouts formula.

I never cared for DnD styled CRPGs regardless if they're modern or from the 90s/early 2000s.

NTA but disco's world is interconnected enough you can't really pull a random paragraph without spoiling shit or coming off random and preachy without context and branching choices (and success/failure being a large part of the context). It would be like posting nothing but the T-1000 walk through the prison bars and going "DUDE THIS SCIFI IS SO BADASS".
I'd argue the best thing to post would be the beginning monologue when Harry is hungover. But I'm biased as that's how the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy text adventure started off as well and that's my favorite zork-like. So just look that up

Fallout party members where really just a 2nd difficulty slider or for Charisma builds. The encounters where largely designed around a single MC.
>>

>>
>>738873618
afaik encased is the "finished" one whereas the others are liable to get major updates. I'd push them down the backlog for that reason
>>
>>738837445
AoD was great, has a tendency to softlock when you're clueless but I beat the game four times in radically different ways each time and always discovered something new to do.
>>
>>738870656
I mean is it actual, real magic or just more scifi tech.
>>
>>738867409
Space wreck is quite interesting ij how the game was not designed with xkmbat as its core solution to issues.
Have yet to buy it, just liked the demo.
>>
>>738874345
I pirated it but yes, being able to talk or steal or tech your way through everything was well done. The environmental interactions in particular is very cool, like making an opening to kill everyone not wearing a space suit.
and the non combat skills still have combat applications. tech will give your robo companions more options, charisma will let you manually control human companions instead of dealing with cpu, etc.
