I personally thought that baby-Volvagia part was really cheap and forced, especially since it came out of nowhere in a flashback right as he killed Volvagia.
The OoT manga was only two volumes though, right? I feel like they were rushed in making that one, whereas the TP one felt like a passion project that took them several years and 11 volumes. I was pleasantly surprised with the Midna/Link angle—I always thought it was a perfect setup for a star-crossed lovers archetype.

At any rate, I’m a fan of their work. I think they did most of the Zelda mangas, with the exception of the WW gag manga, which I also liked.

Each individual title has a self-contained story that sometimes loosely references other titles, with OoT probably being the most referenced. How they fit together is an afterthought, with Miyamoto himself famously not caring, but there are three separate timelines that happened with OoT being the point they split. It doesn’t make logical sense there’s three and not two, but I think that was the only way to address other contradictions.
TP takes place in the child timeline, where Ganondorf’s conquest of Hyrule was thwarted by a child OoT Link warning them and leading to him being captured.

Every game was designed with lore that connected to at least one other game that already existed when it came out.
The timeline splits at Ocarina of Time because it's the game that involves time travel, but that's the only place it does.
There are three main timelines.
>The original timeline, which is the first two games + A Link to the Past
>The "child timeline", the results of Link being sent back before he opened the Temple of Time at the end of OoT, which is Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess
>The "adult timeline", the retroactively added thing that "REALLY" happened when Link beat Ganondorf at the end of OoT, leads to Wind Waker and the rest of the Toon Link games

One take is that the games really are told as legend. There's things that reoccur, overarching themes and ideas, and there is clear intentionality in what happens in each story and how they might fit together but overall there is no one canon, just as there isn't one for something like the Arthurian legend.
This makes it great as a game series because you can just jump in almost anywhere and you're not missing out just because you haven't played some other part of the series first.

The idea that the Zelda franchise wasn't meant to have continuity or it wasn't supposed to be important is western.
The "it's the same legend retold a bunch" explanation came from some random phone guy at Nintendo of America. It is about as far from canon as any Nintendo character participating in gender fuckery. It's an interesting interpretation, but requires ignorance of the actual franchise to work.

I explicitly indicated that there is intention in how the stories fit together, but for the purposes of someone who doesn't know anything about the series and might want to get into it then that isn't something to consider because almost every iteration of the game can be played on it's own without knowing anything about any of the continuity. The presentation of the story in any given game does not rely on it.

Of course an individual game can be played without knowledge of the timeline. But this is true of basically every game short of Mass Effect. People act like the Zelda timeline sits in some different place than the rest of media just because it simultaneously has both intentional timeline splits as plot elements resulting from time travel AND executive meddling resulting in reboots and retcons. But that also describes just about the entirety of the western comics industry. You don't get people waxing poetic about how Superman wasn't meant to have a continuity and thus you can start anywhere, people will just fucking tell you what the "main" Superman is.

Picrel is what Link would be like as an adult, Shade was the time Hero and Twilights ancestor so his height is good indication of what a full Link would be like.

The strength of continuity and the subsequent need for having played other games in a series is not some strict binary, it is variable, and indeed many other series match the level of Zelda. The point of my comment was to indicate to that poster that, compared to what they might have guessed for themselves as an outsider, that the Zelda games are in fact on the side of not being that interlinked from game to game and you can very comfortably jump in anywhere, as opposed to some other series where the bonus to playing some parts of the series first might be much bigger. You could still define some suggested order to experience the Zelda series in the best way even then, but in general the need for that is lower here than for many others, which isn't something that is magically obvious to just anyone.

Sometimes they're characterized close or able to be close. Other times there's a distance between them. Sometimes Link is her neighbor or guard and gets to know her. Other times there's barely any interaction or there's no way she'd actually be with him when she has shit to do and royal expectations.

There's lots of considerations.
There's the practical concerns for a light worlder staying in the Twilight realm.
Bringing Link there means depriving the hero of Courage from Hyrule as well as potentially attracting whatever it is that might target him. The main pathway being severed isn't going to prevent fate from warping around Link as it does, which Midna saw first hand.
Her being the queen may cause all sorts of problems. Imagine Link in a world alien to him with no way to go back to Hyrule but likewise not being able to really be together with her as they would want to.
The worst outcomes are not guaranteed but clearly Midna chose the side of caution. The only problem is really if you assume that the mirror would literally be the only pathway, which at least the manga implies is not the case.
You can even assume this from the game alone, with how unclear it is on how exactly Midna and Zant actually moved between worlds at different points in time.

In terms of the story, I’m pretty sure the people of the twilight and light realms can’t safely exist in the other, and the existence of the mirror allowed Ganondorf to go over and fuck up everything in the twilight and then for Zant to go over and fuck up everything in the light.
Midna starts the game as driven, but still self-centered and immature in some ways, and her growing to the point of choosing the safety of her people over her own heart caps off her character arc.

In terms of what literally happened, in the game she destroys the mirror without him knowing that’s what she was planning. In the manga she pushes him away

I liked TP Zelda, who ironically was almost a background character with how little you saw her. But she did leave an impression on me. I thought it was cool that she was a Zelda that had presumably already awakened to her full potential as the bearer of wisdom (not Hylia, since TP was before they invented her).
I think this is also the best that Zelda’s ever looked.
