They're still mostly wild though, and the Western fur farm foxes are not nearly as domesticated as the ones from the Russian domestication experiments, which are themselves still quite wild. Their piss stinks worse than a cat's, they can't be reliably housebroken, and only some are able to be trained for behavior.

So Europeans (I'm pretty sure the native range of cave hyenas was mainly Europe) having grudges against hyenas might actually be genetic to some extent.

They're very friendly and don't mind humans, the same way squirrels and opossums have adapted to living with us. We shouldn't make them pets, not just because it's hard, but because it wouldn't make sense. Most companion animals can be sedentary and not suffer for it. The only way to have a fox is if you live on enough land to let it run around, which is simply not possible even for most rural people.
