The novelization that came out the same year as the game features elements that weren't actually seen in a game until Brotherhood, like the Cristina Vespucci memories or Ezio's quarrel with Claudia both of which were also planned for AC2; in the book Ezio infiltrated the Vatican in 1503 not four years ealier, and after beating the Pope and opening the vault Rodrigo realizes he wasn't the Prophet and that the last 25 years of his life were a waste and kills himself with poison.https://youtu.be/Zv8ZPXRcFM0?t=40That's the way the original game ended, but they cut such a sizable chunk that they were able to rework it into another full game and so as it stands Cesare and Lucrezia are introduced into the plot and the former kills his dad with a poison apple. The story was supposed to feature one Assassin per game, we weren't gonna get three games with Ezio else they wouldn't have made a big deal in the first one about how we'd see his entire life only to then have two other games with him in his 40s and 50s.
