Did the games have bigger impact then the card game or was it the t.v show that caused Pokemania?I never had the chance to play the original card game was it really that good?
Pokemon as a card game is shallow and boring as shit. 95% of the people who bought packs, boxes, or tins were only collecting it because they looked cool. The same is true today, except now it's losers in their 40s trying to get rich off it.
Pika pikaaaaaa

There's some revisionist history when it comes to this topic since the anime is by far the weakest of the three in the current Pokemon climate. People who were actually kids during this time like myself know that the anime was the single biggest factor behind Pokemania. Cards would be next followed by the games
>>738864537If we're talking about gen 1. All 3 things (anime/game/cards) releasing around the same time was good for driving Pokemania. I would say at the time it was the anime>game>cards in that order which was good. A lot of people collected the cards but not to play the card game, just to collect them all.
>>738865456based on what?
>>738865885>revisionistHuh,anon it was always about the cards, the anime helped boost sales but by & large it was the TCG that made everyone lose their marbles
>>738865251Love these videos lmaoSeeing adults get into fist fights over pokemon cards is a special kind of comedy
>>738864537It was considered a cartoon with a bunch of spin-off stuff in the 90s. The card game is an extension of that, coming out when it seemed like there was a card game for everything. I don't think it was many people's introduction to Pokemon.
Pokemon would have had minimal cultural impact in the west had it not been for the godawful cartoon
>>738865251Part and parcel
>>738865251my favorite part is the guy literally one foot away from the fight not giving a single fuck still trying to scrape up as much cards as he can
>>738868150It was one of the 1st anime they saw m8
>>738864537It was all three. All three multiplied the effect of the other which resulted in whipping every kid up into a frenzy.
>>738864537At least where I was, barely anyone actually played the card game, just collected the cards. Also the people who did play the game didn't play it properly, just sort of made up rules.
>>738865251Land of debris, home of the depraved.
>>738865251Context what's going on here?
>>738870817Pokemon has attracted a large community of faggots who literally fight over trading cards in Target because they learned they could make money off it in 2020 when Logan Paul started shilling it.
Bump
>>738865251Good, Jamal, whoop these fucking scalpers
Not even Chris Chan really cared about the games. Here he is as Ash Ketchum playing the cards.
>>738864537the games had the most impact.every kid was playing pokemon during recess.i think the tv show had a lot of reruns starting out
>>738869456it was the same thing here, the only people that considered the evolution mechanic are the people that played the gameboy tcg
>>738873274What if I was an innocent gamestop employee and a new sonic tv series changed the color of his arms?
>>738870817A nog is nogging.
>>738864537When first released games weren't selling well, it was the rumor about Mew being inside the game that skyrocked sales. So basically, Morimoto saved Pokémon
I WANNA BE THE VERY BEST
>>738864537>receive Nintendo VHS in the mail that was a Pokemon promo video>I think it came with Nintendo Power>watch the first few episodes, it might have even been on the VHS, like up to the one where he steals Misty's bike and Pikachu shocks the Spearows>I already played Magic so I didn't really care about the cards, but my dad bought a pack because he loved us>soon Pokemania sweeps the neighborhood >people do play the game, but we only actually care about the cards>after a few months, they even need to ban Pokemon cards from school>if they see you with Pokemon cards, they confiscate the entire binder until the end of the year>...but they don't care if you bring your gameboy and play Pokemon during recess or after school or whatever
>>738870817Pokemon card restocks have become PvP hotspots, there are constant fights at them now. IIRC some stores are removing the vending machines because it's getting THAT bad. Card shops are being robbed at gunpoint and broken into at night just so people can steal Pokemon cards.
>>738864537No one played the card game back then. Very few people play it today. Its almost entirely for collectors.
>>738875332But why? This shit didn't happen with any other card game that had a popularity era. Not on this level anyway
>>738875503The other big card games have been in decline for a while. Also as >>738875463 said there's less money in them since they also have to appeal to gameplay fags. Yugioh is almost entirely gameplay focused and Konami does yearly reprints. So while there are occasionally $200~ meta staples, the price quickly drops and there aren't any real lottery ticket cards worth fighting over. MTG is somewhere in the middle, but despite their best efforts pandering to shitskins, literally the only people who give a single fuck about that game are 30 something white dudes who aren't likely to get into fights at Walmart checkouts.
pokemon would have been nothing without the animeit was a really effective commercial
I get why millenials would want a complete set of the original cards, nostalgiaWhy the fuck are 39 year olds getting into physical fights over fucking modern Pokemon cards with modern Pokemon in them? You're not gonna get a cool Gengar or Nidoking you're gonna get one of those gay motorcycle pokemon, or the furry cat starter thing or the bara cat starter thing, or the furry otter starter thing, or the furryWell you get the point
>>738876215Because there are special prints worth $1000~ in a couple of them.
They were all popular at the same time during pokemania, kids walked around with binders of the cards at recess and had a gameboy in their pocket.
>>738875503There's a lot of collectors willing to pay top dollar for cards and packs have alternate art versions of cards(imagine they rolled +1 or +2 in a game) for collectors to chase after. Also, what happens with these new cards is that the foils have different patterns on them, because the foil pattern is applied randomly to the card so you can get cards where it looks like Pikachu is farting and it will be rare amongst all the holographic Pikachus because it might be one of the only cards with the holo effect in that position. It's extreme gambling these days, it's not like the old days where you pull a card and it's the same as every other card. You can get rare alt art or silly holo effects. A competitive deck for Pokemon costs like $30, because you can use all the basic bitch card cards with bad holo placement.
>>738876703Why is he shitting fairy dust

>>738870946>faggotsSpics and niggers, specifically. I've been dealing with these scalping sneakerhead fucking cunts for the past 3 years because this pokemon craze is insane. I'm so fucking pissed
>>738876215>You're not gonna get a cool Gengar or NidokingYou sweet summer child. You think they open the stuff? Fuck no. They resell it for 3x or 4x the MSRP price that they paid. And faggots buy it up
>>738876215They get in physical fights because they're unemployed and make a living scalping pokemon cards because you can easily double or triple your money
if i remember rightly the cards were what made pokemon popular in my school but nobody actually played the card game, just collected them. most people also played the games though
>>738876215Its people that literally buy in bulk just to go back & resell for huge profits anon
>>738875332KEKKKKfucking burgermuttsI wish this was a thing in my country I'd go there just to beat the shit out of some zoomies
