It seems like dying can become metamorphosis for things in elden ring's world. There's a short scene in nightreign that actually seems to show this in action, a crucible knight commits sudoku because the painter he was guarding got killed and his body falls on top of the painter's. The character "Executor" is a completely new being with residual memories from both the painter and the crucible knight and he comes to peace with that.I've seen vids that talk about how the divine tower has a lot of decorations that mimic irl Egyptian burials and the hornsent upper echelons are obsessed with having divine spirits take over their bodies. So whatever the divine gate actually does seems to be mixing the dead candidates and spirits together to create something not just new but divine.
