Is the disc drive and physical games dead?

Insiders say Xbox is ditching physical for Helix and Sony may ditch disk drives for cost savings.
>>
>>738882360
Pretty much. 80% of PS5 game sales are digital. PC is all digital. Xbox is going digital. Switch has game cards but it's a scam or if you want true physical it's more expensive than digital.

Basically physical is dead.
>>
It's shrinking year after year, even Nintendo is now shipping games with download codes instead of physical copies and they're usually the slowest with those kind of things.
>>

>disc drive adds $100 to component costs
Who is this retard?

I switched to PC piracy during PS4 when it was clear that physical ownership was dying.
>>
>>738882360
Obviously, they're dead. Game stores are all shutting down or selling boardgames and toys and shit now, the secondary market has seen like a 800% mark-up, PC hasn't has physical games in years, even Nintendo is going digital now. It's the same for DVDs and the 50 different streaming "services" now.
It's over. We will own nothing and be (un)happy.
>>
>>738882360
CD is boomer tech.

>oh no, my data storage device got a scratch on it and is now unusable
get real.
>>
>>738882360
he's right, disc drives are obsolete.
we should have moved back to cartridges years ago
>>
>>738882714
stop with the anti-Semitic remarks
>>
>>738882360
>you're going to be lucky
No, I'm just not going to buy it.
>>
>>738882647
Yeah that'll show them moron lmao
>>
i thought gen z liked physical media and were driving some sort of resurgence of buying physical media? was that perhaps all a lie and was once again gen z being performative?

Xbox has no sales for almost a decade now yet they get more physical releases than Nintendo. I'm not saying physical not shrinking but every time I read shit takes like in the OP I can't help but roll my eyes. The PS6 will have a drive because there are tens of millions of hardcore users with wast libraries who buy more games than a thousand average user. And because the console market is shrinking they need to milk the leftover userbase even harder.
>>
>>738882360
Carts > discs

Always have been, always will be.
>>
Capitalism isn't to blame so don't even start
>>
>>738882714
>Cartridges
PFFFHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

the only reason disc based media managed to last this long is because it's dirt cheap to manufacture

no corporation is going to sell basically a 100 gig hard drive with every game
>>
>>738882360
They will both have drives that you buy separately.
>source
My dream with Asha.
>>
>>738882929
Protip: the internet is full of half truths and sensational clickbait takes. Twatter made it so that people build their opinion on feelings they got from reading shit takes.
Consoles are dead for a decade now yet GTA6 launches exclusively on them. Xbox are deader than dead yet tens of millions still buy their shit. Physical is dead yet there will be discs for another decade at least.
>>
I won't care, will save me plenty of money as I'll pirate everything
>>
>>738882681
okay, i just won't pay for any of it then
>>
>>738882360
Some company’s bottom line is not my problem as a consumer.
Give me a good deal or I won’t buy your shit
>>
>>738883081
Hi miyamoto your movie sucked btw
>>
>>738883220
PS will sure have, the only question is if they go with the PS5 slim disc / digital method where there will be two boxes and one will be a little more expensive or the PS5Pro method where no system will have a drive and you must buy a very expensive addon.
Xbox is speedrunning to their death because the next Xbox will be out of the budget of 90% of their users. So by that logic it could included the drive, it won't change much at that price point.
>>
>>738882542
What games?
>>
i am sinply not buying a console with no physical media
>>
>>738883413
I disagree.
>>
>>738883473
Based ownership chad
>>
>>738882360
xbox ditching physical is expected, they've already given up their shelf space and half ass their physical releases by not even including the game on the disc and forcing a download
ps dropping disc would be shit
>>
>>738882516
>80% of PS5 game sales are digital
this number's not exactly honest, restrict it to full games and not digital only content like DLCs/passes/microtransactions and it's more like 50/50
>>
>>738882360
Whatever problems the corporation has are not my problems, if I want a disc drive I sure as hell won't buy a console without one.
Plus, I bought a single GKC, and I won't fall for the scam again, if memory is so expensive you can't afford to ship it, then adjust the damn cartridge so it has less capacity so you don't have wasted space.
>>
>>738883220
separate disc drives still suck because they force an internet connection to set up
>>
>>738882360
>he thinks there will be next gen machines at all
lol
>>
>>738883904
You got a source for that?
>>
>>738882360
>Is the disc drive and physical games dead?
Killed
They were killed
>>
>>738882360
"You're going to be lucky if." As if they're doing me a fucking favour by releasing a locked down piece of plastic with a monthly sub to use the internet I already pay for. If the service continually degrades, I simply won't buy whatever they're selling and be no worse off.

he doesn't, nor can I help him out
but Sony can help all of us out
>>
Consoles are just becoming shittier PCs with more DRM. They aren't even much cheaper. Completely pointless.
>>
>>738884396
Ok so that anon was wrong. Thanks.
>>
>>738882360
no disc drive no buy. simple as, it's their problem to figure it out
>>
>>738882360
If they don't have a disc drive then it needs to run emulators right out the box.
>>
>>738884396
grim
>>
>>738882360
Probably. I only buy physical and am not particularly bothered by it going away either, because I've mostly stopped playing modern games. The Switch and PS4 will probably be the newest consoles I own from here on out. Anything that accelerates modern gaming's downfall is just a bonus to me at this point. Every company--Not just in the video game industry--That is having problems right now just seems to be doubling-down on the bullshit that's causing those problems, and I can't wait for it all to blow up in their faces. Then it will be on to political arguments over bail-outs for tech companies that are too big to fail.
>>
>>738882360
Do disc drives have a lot of DRAM and NAND in them? What's his point?
>>
>>738882360
The only reason to own a console is for the physical games. If they don't have that then what's the point.
>>
>>738882360
I hope they do it so there's even less reason to get a gay station
>>
>>738882360
I don't think I've purchased a physical game since 2017.
>>
Okay. I won't buy it.
>But others will
I don't give a fuck. I won't buy it.
>>
>>738882516
>>738884396
I'm pretty sure Nintendo's is still almost 50/50. I really wonder what causes the discrepancy. Is it cartridges vs disks?
>>
>>738883472
None. Only third party games. Everything developed by Nintendo and many of its second party devs are full game on cart.
>>
>>738882986
A lot of third-party games are released physically for Xbox Series X. Code Vein II, Monster Hunter Stories 3, Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad, Life is strange: Reunion, Invincible VS etc...
>>
>>738882360
>Add 50 to 100 to cost
Fucking out of touch techbro
Bluray drives are like 10 bucks in bulk
>>
>>738882929
They're buying vinyl though, not physical games. Young people only play Minecraft, Roblox and Fortnite
>>
>>738882360
Digital games = free games

You're going to be lucky if I even consider pirating your games
>we just gotta give you an inferior product!
>it's just economically impossible to not scam you with a cheap piece of plastic with maybe a whole (one) good game for it!
It's very simple
I don't work
I don't buy
I don't care

And to be completely honest?
I stopped pirating half a decade ago, games nowadays are so shit I don't even invest my time in them.
>>
>>738882360
how dare the consumers want things in products they want to buy?
