These are pretty much the peaks of the series. Hell, of the JRPG genre.
>b-but muh day/night cycle
fuck off
>>
yes
as seen in every pokemon rom hack. idk if i've ever seen one use anything besides gen3 whether its rse or frlr
>>
What was the reason why gen 3 didn't have a day/night cycle?
Gamefreak just being lazy again?
>>
>>738896213
this is where they gave up. in gen 2 they didn't remove gen 1 pokemon. in gen 2 they didn't remove old regions.

gen 3 was where gamefreak realised they didn't need to put effort in and people would still buy pokemon in droves. they deleted 100 pokemon. they deleted johto. they deleted kanto. they deleted dozens of features. they couldn't be bothered including most of the stuff that was in gen 2, and they got away with it. And every gen since has been even more cut corners and removed content.

>>738896558
same reason everything else is missing. this was where they decided they couldn't be bothered including stuff from previous games.
>>
>>738896598
>this was where they decided they couldn't be bothered including stuff from previous games.
I thought Sword/Shield were the first ones not to include EVERY Pokemon up until that point?
>>
>>738897561
ruby/sapphire did it first, it's missing 100 pokemon
>>
>>738896598
>in gen 2 they didn't remove old regions.
No, but they did downscale a lot of things in Kanto like Veridian Forest. Honestly, it wasn't worth it because Johto is now only remembered for being next to Kanto instead of being a good region.
>>
>>738897781
Johto is my favourite region, the architecture and flora is a lot more interesting than any other region gamefreak has ever depicted. They really made it over-the-top Japanese, and because gamefreak are japanese they executed on that a lot more competently than every other time they've tried to depict anywhere else. Something to be expected when you work with what you know instead of coming in as an outsider with a very shallow interpretation.
>>
>>738897940
>Something to be expected when you work with what you know instead of coming in as an outsider with a very shallow interpretation.
I've played both GSC and HGSS. Johto is worse off as a region because of its association with Kanto. From the plot, to the gym leaders, the level curve, and the pokemon distribution.
>>
>>738898064
I don't agree at all, Johto is a lot better than anything that came after it. None of the other regions have an identity because gamefreak don't have the competence or the vision to execute on giving any other region a coherent aesthetic or design. Johto was the one time they nailed it

You can't tell me that Kalos actually feels like France, or Galar feels like the UK, or Paldea feels like Spain. It's absolutely laughable. It's a fucking joke

that the next game will have that pokemon in it and then you cam trade it back if you want to use it for a special playthrough. Even though RS lacked Bulbasaur, you could still use one after FrLG came out. This is completely impossible in modern pokemon

Back when they truly cared, not only did you get an amazing game but also
>Cool as fuck box with shiny effects, made it stand out from the rest of the boxes in your collection
>Nice manuals, Emerald came with a promo/poster and the other two with an e-card, useless but still a neat bonus
>The cart itself, not only was it colored but also was transparent
>If that wasn't enough the label in the cart itself also had that shiny effect the game box had

Getting a pokémon game was an experience.
>Gen IV did away with the colored carts
>HGSS brought some SOUL back with that cool box and pokéwalker
>Most soul gone by Gen V, boxart wasn't shiny anymore
>Eventually, we didn't even get manuals, but that happened to every game

Sucks buying physical nowadays...
>>
>>738897940
>They really made Ecutreak over-the-top Japanese while everything else was a bland generic town/city/dungeon/etc scarcely any different from what's in Kanto
FTFY
>>
>>738898676
I used to think this until I played ROM hacks where everything is available. It leads to insane route bloat where every area has like 20-30 available mons without an organic overlap between routes to make the areas more believable like zigzagoons being all over the place without inflating the encounter pools even more. It sucks that you can't find some of them at all even in post game, but having a solid regional dex of 150-200 is better for designing an RPG campaign.
>>
>>738899064
bad romhacks that fuck it up doesn't make it conceptually incorrect

r/s should have had johto and kanto in it and you could have still had reasonable habitats that didn't strain plausibility
>>
>>738898064
>Johto is worse off as a region because of its association with Kanto.
this, so much this
and it's so frustrating because I really really liked Jotho
>>
>>738898318
>hope you didn't take the water/ground mon that comes with earthquake
I have plenty of bitches to learn HMs and Swampert isn't one of them.
>>
>>738899159
If you were able to dump in more areas, sure, it'd be fine, but I don't think they had the dev time for that. They couldn't even add a day/night cycle in R/S so a whole other region was probably out of the question
>>
>>738898676
You could just cheat them in.
>>
>>738899195
Pokemon 4Ever and Heroes absolutely spoiled me because those were better showcases of Johto than the games themselves.
>>
>>738899206
>it's ok that there are 3 water HMs you just have to give up a whole ass pokemon slot or 3/4 moves of your starter pokemon so you can explore the game world!

surf is fine. surf, waterfall and dive are not. I can live with giving up at most a slot, MAYBE two if the HM move is really good, but they usually are not or have some kind of conflict. like surf and waterfall after the split for example. both moves are good, but you're going to favor one or the other based on the pokemon's attacking type. Gen 3 just has 3 water type HMs and they're all worse than Surf, the first one you get.
>>
>>738896213
Based

3>1>2
>>
>>738900363
Surf is good because it can hit two mons at once and does 95, while Waterfall only hits once and does 80. Waterfall wouldn't become good until Gen 4 when it became a physical.
>>
>>738900619
I know anon, what do you think
>like surf and waterfall after the split for example. both moves are good, but you're going to favor one or the other based on the pokemon's attacking type.
meant? Gen 3 is not after the split, so all water moves are special, which means Surf has the most amount of BP, hits both slots, and is unlocked first. So with every water HM you put onto a pokemon after surf, you are just burning move slots to navigate waterworld. So your choices are
A. Give up an entire pokemon slot for an HM slave or
2. waste half of your water pokemon's movepool on dogshit
>>
>>738899608
not every kid had parents that bought them every random add-on
>>
>>738900887
or you just learn surf and dive, forget dive when you're done with it and learn waterfall, forget waterfall once you get to elite 4 and use your ice beam tm. playing through sapphire right now and that's what I did with my lanturn. surf, ice beam, tbolt, and confuse Ray. no need to rape your water mon permanently
>>
>>738896213

Because "new gen = new region" is all you faggots know. Every kid who imagined what shit would be like beyond the trees and barriers in Kanto got it in GSC. They're for all intents and purposes "Pokemon 2" and not just another place to slap new Pokemon in. Johto being associated with Kanto is not a bad thing.

RS were massive flops. Emerald had to basically remake the entire game because of how bad RS were.

Nigga it's the same as every other pokemon game. The abilites that were introduced had little to no impact on the game unless you're playing PvP.
>>best monster designs
That goes to gen 1.
>>best stories
All the pokemon "stories" fucking suck and I hate that Hoenn started the "le evil dudes grab the box legendary for their evil plot" story that they've been repeating ever since. Having little to no story like in gen 1/2 is the best way to do a pokemon game.
>>by far the best world
I love Hoenn but it does unironically have too much water. Kanto remains the best designed region to this day. Hoenn is more distinct though, lots of biome variation, which I appreciate.

Polished Crystal goes crazy with all its changes to GSC. I think the closest romhacks would be:

>Recharged Emerald
>Emerald Legacy/Legacy Enhanced
>Elite Redux (difficulty hack)
>>
>>738904305
For in-game the "massive game changing new element" does fuckall. The game plays exactly the same as RBY and GSC. If you unga bunga'd with your starter, like most kids did, you wouldn't even realize abilities were a thing. The only really impactful abilities you'll see during the story is drought/drizzle.

It's easy for me to see how much better these games are than FRLG.
>>
>>738905640
Not sure, probably for the reasons you're in this thread right now
>>
>>738904720
It certainly matters if you care about compfaggotry, but for in-game, which is what 99.9% of players do, it genuinely doesn't matter enough to make the combat noticeably different from gen 1 or 2. Abilities do get more important in later games, but in gen 3 they are very basic. The only really impactful one for in-game is compound eyes on butterfree in FRLG because it basically gets spore for the whole game.
>>
>>738904648
FRLG are unironically kind of bad. They're the first remakes though so some respect is due, but they're really boring games. They needed more to them beyond copying and pasting Kanto into Gen 3's graphics. Sevii Islands isn't enough and they're postgame anyway.
>>
>>738905867
and drizzle, drought, sandstream, shadowtag, guts, chlorophyll, intimidate, levitate, speed boost, static, swift swim, truant, and natural cure. they only don't matter if you are playing on the same level as NPC trainers, but I got alot of mileage out of swift swim ludicolo for example in emerald. You seem to be framing this entire thing around what the enemy does, and not what you can do with them.

The problem is that the AI is retarded and the game never even attempts to make you care to mess with options. Unless you're doing comp or some sort of special run, you never have to bother.
>>
>>738906790
What's competitive look like?

They don't matter if you play normally, because you're just gonna outspeed and oneshot the opponent anyway.
>drizzle, drought, sandstream
Locked to Kyogre, Groudon and Tyranitar. The former two would oneshot everything even without abilities because they're fucking box legendaries, and the latter doesn't get anything out of sandstorm in gen 3 aside from a bit of chip damage.
>shadowtag
Tell me with a straight face that you're unironically using fucking Wobbuffet for in-game
>guts
No status orbs so this is only an incidental upside that comes up once in a while. Unless you want to waste your time getting poisoned on purpose by some shitmon, or avoid using pokecenters to maintain the buff
>chlorophyll
Yeah bro I'm sure you're running manual sunny day to take advantage of this with, what, fucking Tropius? Vileplume?
>intimidate
You shouldn't be getting hit in the first place so this just wastes time at the start of every battle
>levitate
Actually kinda nice I'll give you that
>static
Again, why are you getting hit?
>swift swim
Same as chlorophyll, why the fuck would you manually set rain?
>speed boost
Ninjask does fuckall, dies to everything, and doesn't even unlock baton pass shenanigans until late game
>truant
The only thing this does is make you not want to use Slaking
>natural cure
Roselia is a shitmon and Starmie would outspeed and oneshot anyway
These only come up with you're doing a challenge run. In which case yeah they're impactful, but if you just play normally you never have to even thing about these.

I beat 99% of it on master just spamming shields (which procced bad stuff on enemies, but all I did was click shields). There was one story fight (and a couple optional legendary keepers) where that didn't win easily.
While Gamefreak's games are too easy for it to matter, I think Pokemon combat has more depth.
