Maybe the developer ran out of time, then rushed the last part of Half-Life 2? Almost the entirety of HL2 is a tech demo for the Source engine, so I think by the time Nova Prospekt comes along, all the Source engine gimmicks had already been done and the player is left with just the shooting parts(which suck).

I'd go as far to say the bridge is the peak of HL2 gameplay wise and everything that comes after never manages to hit this high.

i honestly think people would be much nicer to xen if there were a big glowing sign pointing you towards the lower level of the launcher section. the rest of it is just running and gunning but everyone seems to get confused on getting to the floating platform.

I'm honestly not sure why they put the launchers in the map in the first place, they launch you up high towards the moving platforms so everyone thinks you're supposed to do that when they just kill you and you're supposed to go to the caves below

I liked bringing every single turret to the portal chamber and just watching the slaughter. They usually could kill the elite troops that show up as you portal out, too.

Yeah the last quarter of the game becomes a slog, except for the super gravity gun that part is fun

It doesn't help that hl2 has probably the most boring shooting in a shooty game. Most of the guns feel pathetic and the early game weapons like the pistol, smg, and crowbar basically become useless later in the game

Same. Back in 2004 I liked chucking things with the gravity gun and improvising weapons to beat Combine to death with, but replaying it again I just enjoyed shooting things more. I wish the AR2 was more accurate, it's got a good kick and great damage and the Combine soldiers have decent AI for squad tactics, which makes things fun, and it's kind of a treat when you actually get ammo for it. Anticitizen One and Follow Freeman just being even more shoot was great.

It sucks because the uprising concept has been around in development since the very beginning. Like there are maps in the beta with the player going through a big river (which is why there's a huge river seen at the Citadel skybox) and another map of fighting through a park. Yet in comparison the version we got was very basic.

the gravity gun is cool and all but imo a power weapon with limited resource management is almost always more fun to use in a shooter and half-life 2 is really lacking in that compared to HL1 with stuff like the tau cannon

smg grenades, crossbow, and pulse ball i guess. it's not really a crime for a shooter to give you your full arsenal before the final stretch of the game so they can really play with the whole toolset but HL2 doesn't really have the effect of "finally I can play with that really fun weapon that I didn't get to use that much," the closest thing is the blue gravity gun

The only part of them which is actually dogshit is the hoppers. They made them take forever to pull up, and you can't chain-detonate them because that might actually be fun. Nope! You just get to enjoy all the fun of pulling weeds from your garden, one by one

Imagine if HL2 was the first game you'd ever played with movable turrets, squad mechanics, driveable first-person vehicles, or physics puzzles. It'd be pretty impressive, right?
And that's really what Half-Life 2 is. It's a bunch of cool tech demos smacked together that lost their luster within a year of it coming out once a dozen other games pulled off the exact same tricks.
Which is a shame. I like the core gameplay of HL2, I just hate everything else about it.

Really sad how Episode 3 never came to be. It's the one game in the HL2 saga that tried to add more stuff to the base HL2 gameplay. You got weapons like the ice gun, the so-called weaponizer and even Valve wanted to bring back gluon gun from HL1.

Half-Life is easily in my top 10 and is by far my most replayed game, but HL2 is really boring to replay. Also making the deathmatch an entirely different game was a retarded move. At least its not completely dead yet but itd have way more players if it was in base HL2

Half-Life 2 was a huge leap in physics and storytelling when it was released, it seems like after episode 2, they wanted episode 3 to be a similar leap but with the success of steam where they get a lot of money by just hosting other games and the equal structure inside Valve where employees could do what they want, there was no push to make HL3, TF3 or Portal 3 because they had other revenue streams. Now HL3 is so overhyped that it couldnt possibly match fan expectation so why bother trying?

Best part of the half life series is the atmosphere and feel to it, (thats why "the source engine" has a fanbase) they really nailed it on that part, obviously the physics too which is a core element of the gameplay which as far as Im aware no other game excelled at it like half life did. But the overall gameplay does get boring pretty fast, especially when half the game in an introduction to the physics. the story is pretty gay and shallow and the only reason people care about the story is because of le mysterious reddit theories involving gman.

Maybe im just stupid and or a low iq retard....Played it the day it came out and it blew me away...i will never forget the first time in ravenholm, the fear..the fun with the saw blades....The whole atmosphere of the game, the level design (soviet style)...i think its a masterpiece. Every 3 years i do a quick full run and i still can refeel some parts and the ones i cant refeel are still totally fine compared to shooters nowadays. Ye its a tech demo...but its a tech demo with an unique atmosphere.

The thing is people weren't expecting too much out of Episode 3. Previous Episodes were fine, people liked them enough and they didn't expect the current HL3 hype level out of Episode 3 back then. Only after years of silent wait did the hype build up considerably, and it became insurmountable. Valve should've finished it right then and there and maybe they wouldn't have to shoulder this huge burden of expectations.
