Using the headset is the difference between staring inside the world through a tiny little window, like you do on a flat, vs being inside the world itself. That is why I default to traditional controls but full 3d whenever I can. On that note you don't need to outright buy a headset from the get go. I know there are ways to rent one to try out and see if it is your thing. The scene is still very heavily enthusiast dependent with mods and third party tools like UEVR or Vorpx. Since official developers dont want to make VR versions as they believe VR=motion controls.
