>the best argument in DECADES to stop using Windows for gaming and it's...a controller
Works on my machine, troonix
>>738917951>>the best argument in DECADES to stop using Windows for gaming and it's...a controller worse than a console controllernice
>>738918019Explain your method.
come on /v/, post your gameplay
>>738917951Should've posted the 360 controller. Xinput and various other 7th gen Windows APIs were the first clear sign for gamers that Microsoft would torch existing, better standards like DirectInput and cripple their own products just to minutely fuck with their competition.
Surely the COMMUNITY recognizes the importance of Windows-native compatibility of this controller and designs their own driver for it.
when's the next quake live kbm vs controller match? this time controller has a chance
>>738917951But I'm using it on windows right now. Trackpad and buttons work to navigate my desktop.>>738918142just werks as long as steam runsTo make it work in non steam games just add game to steam library.
>>738918254If DirectInput actually had a more sensible way to deal with analog triggers I would agree but it's always just been hacked onto a single axis (so depressing both triggers is read as a single 0, not 255/255 across both).XInput at least got around this. I'm not sure if it was shitty driver implementation of controllers of yore or if the restriction actually exists within the DirectInput API (there is no way to designate four separate analog axes).
>>738918334>To make it work in non steam games just add game to steam library. That works for all but one class of game: UWPs.UWPs can be added to Steam but it is a BALLACHE.
>>738918239I don't have a video but I play Ultrakill with no aim assist, only gyro+trackpad.
>>738917951Not gonna happen, Linus.
How do I get that controller overlay that shows button presses and gyro movement that some streamers use?
>>738918312https://youtu.be/0bH9Mwh1bRIGyro has been really good since we got that shit implemented.
>>738918347Sorry, that should be six axes (X, Y, RX, RY, RT, LT).
>run SISR>now it works on Windows without steamwow that was hard
>>738918485I installed this for the brief time I had the Steam Controller but I didn't find it intuitive. That said I was already kind of checked out on using the controller in general for reasons beyond just struggling with non-Steam compatibility and ready to send it off to my friend who actually wanted it so I wasn't giving it a LOT of time.If this thing goes on sale to a degree I like in the winter I'll probably rebuy it and give it a genuine go with trying to gain full Windows compatibility.
>>738918124>a controller worse than a console controllerNo such thing.
>>738918124gyro mogs
>playstation controller requires running ds4windows>WiiU controller requires running WiinUPro>shitty third party controllers require x360ce, joy2key, vjoy, etc. pick your poison>Steam input comes along, adds Switch controller support, as well as supporting everything above>Switch controller requires running SteamWe were here until Steam controller came out, no one complained>Steam controller requires running SteamSuddenly it's an issue
>>738918368the hell is a uwp?
>>738918437nice video. while we're at it, what's the best currently still active game for instagib?
>>738918835Universal Windows Platform. That thing that MS introduced with Windows 8 for their full-screen touch apps.Basically shit bought from the MS Store. It isn't treated like a standard executable, even if the actual game software is launched as a regular Win32 program. It's also how Xbox games are deployed since the Xbox One.
>>738917951Playing citra/azahar through steam works just fine with a dual sense. Using the steam controller though it adds a bunch of input latency and dropped inputs. The controller works perfectly fine for every other emulator I've tried. No idea what could cause that.
>>738918790shills and contrarians will do anything to topple the last few companies that kinda give a shit about the consumer
>>738918914>emulator
>>738918582It seemed very simple to me, the only issue I had was a bug while disconnecting that caused it to send controller reconnect/disconnect in a loop until I force closed VIIPER.I'm currently trying to work out what causes joystick emulation on a trackpad to randomly just not work half the time with centering enabled, it seems like it's a software issue on Valve's side though because I can reproduce the same behavior through the test program while the trackpad is showing as working.
>>738918790The Steam Controller isn't made by a company that only expected their hardware to be used with their proprietary hardware.Unless it was, at which point fuck Valve.
>>738917951>ps1 adds thumbsticks as an afterthought>decades later companies are still copying this shitty layout meant for 2d gamescan we not also no actual good player thinks this shit is ok
>>738919127How small are your hands?
>>738918790It's because these are children who weren't there for how bad controller support was before steam input came and solved it all. They legitimately think that controllers 'just work' as if the whole reason it's like this wasn't all valves doing. Microsoft have done jackshit for a decade, letting their anitquited support bog down the entire PC landscape and this is also somehow Valves fault. The 'valve does nothing' meme is only true if you're completely tech illiterate and don't understand just how much effort valve has put in over a decade to unfuck an ecosystem they don't even have majority ownership in.
>>738919002they're trying to make Steam more normalfag friendly, so it's extremely important they create a unified system with the Deck <> Controller similar to what Apple have with their interop between hardware and the ecosystem.
>>738919229what does layout have to do with the size of the controlleralsoxbox > psmy hands are hueg
>>738919336Yes but unlike apple if someone at Sony came along and said 'hey we want the steam controller/steam input stack to be integrated into Ps5s valve would shrug and say sure. They hand steam os to anyone who wants to support it because they genuinely care about making the platform better instead of a walled garden.
>>738918859I wish I knew myself. I've given up on even looking at shooters these days because it's all controller slop. I just play custom Quake levels and Doom wads.
>>738919229>>738919462now what noob?
>>738919336BUT, and here's the key fucking difference, SteamOS is not the only (not even predominant) choice for gaming on PC and even if they didn't care to support Windows on their own for the reasons you stated they SHOULD be open to giving access to low-level APIs for developers who want to make their own efforts to bring the controller to other platforms. If they're doing that then good, I can just wait to see what the community does (and it isn't just about PC gaming but other ways game controllers can be connected to things, like via Brook's Wingman series of controller adapters) but if they're not then that is more than just appeasing the technically unenlightened. That's walled-garden thinking.
>>738919127As someone who has a Steam Controller, the stick placement feels closer to the xbox's left stick than anything Playstation, despite the symmetrical sticks.
got mine yesterday and it's kino
>>738919850I'd call it about halfway between, it's a nice middle ground. The D-pad and buttons are very comfortable in placement.
>>738917951windows made the argument by itself. windows is so fucking dogshit now
>>738918347>If DirectInput actually had a more sensible way to deal with analog triggers I would agree but it's always just been hacked onto a single axis (so depressing both triggers is read as a single 0, not 255/255 across both). No, that's just how the 360 controller handled it afaik, there are 8 available axes in the API and racing wheels have mapped pedals separately before. There was also an independent 3rd party driver for the 360 controller that fixed that issue under DirectInput, so it wasn't a hard limitation, they just intentionally fucked it up.
>>738918745>controller fag experiences out-strafing console plebs for the first time eversad really, you can still grow up
>>738920110Thats a good way of putting it. I've always hated the Playstation controller layout and the Steam Controller feels nice to me.
>>738918368>UWPsOh yeah those exist. Do they still make them?
>>738921363Well if I decide I like Forza Horizon 6 after my "Steam rental" period I'm getting the MS Store version so...yes.
it's much lighter than I was expectingalso typing on the virtual keyboard using the trackpads works surprisingly well
>>738918408His review kind of turned me off it though
I've been having a ton of fun just dicking around and seeing what shit I can do in Steam Input. In Warframe I:>Bound LT to both ADS and activate gyro for aiming>Bound back buttons to abilities so I don't have to use the shitty RB+face buttons (this also frees up RB to do something else)>Bound right trackpad to mouse specifically in menus to navigate those better>Play Lavos a lot, so I created a virtual menu and bound it to left trackpad to instantly infuse any of the combined elements by just selecting it in the menu>Since this requires taking my thumb off the left stick, left trackpad is also bound to W to make me automatically walk forward while I select an elementI think this triggers the same kind of autism as modding Skyrim. It's crazy how much depth there is to this and I still don't know 1/2 of the options in here
>>738920649you're misunderstanding, i meant gyro mogs analog stick. both players in the webm are on analog sticks, not gyro.gyro is almost as good as mouse aiming, in my opinion. webm related is my noob gyro aiming. even as a newcomer, this is miles ahead of sticks.
>>738922693It being light is good for gyro.
>>738918959YOUR COMPUTER IS EMULATING! TURN IT OFF RIGHT NOW!
>>738918263you can use x360ce. you configure it once and it works system-wide
