The thing a lot of classic JRPGs used to do where leaving an area would bring you to a giant map where you just walked around and most areas on the world were represented by icons/tiles on the map.

A more seamless transition between areas and the world that doesn't bring you to an entirely new screen/map. The perspective stays the same and fields retain the same kind of detail and level design as actual locations.
