https://www.phoronix.com/news/SDL-Steam-Controller-2026Steam Controller is saved.
what are those squares under the analogs?
>>738927338You use them for h-games for rubbing boobs.
>>738927220Wrong. People with an already updated SDL3 already have the controller working in their games, it just didn't have all those extra tidbits like the touchpads. The complaints are about the controller -not working at all-, which is because most games don't include an up to date SDL3. So this changes nothing.
>>738927338heating pads so you can keep your thumbs warm while watching cutscenes
>>738927220All this and image transparency using native methods is still broken in SDL last I checked
It needs a DRIVER to function fully. Games can pick up on it but that's just games written with the ability to recognize it when present. As an input device it still has no native recognition when Steam isn't involved.
>>738929437Isnt this the case for every piece of hardware ever? You have two options>use software that can directly use it>use compatibility layer software
>>738929437It has an open source Linux driver.>but what about Wind-lmao
>>738931709Well if it's open source it can be forked and ported, no?
>>738927338those are the DK bongo pads
>>738931769No, it can't be. To have a driver on Windows you need it signed and the signing process costs over 100k USD.
>>738932359How do chinks afford this
>>738933665Aren't chink controllers just generic gamepads with xinput? Windows has generic drivers. Those are only gonna support limited functionality though. You can also have userspace software (like Steam) to provide the necessary functionality.
>>738933828Yep that's limitedAlthough some people moan about how Valve could just do this, make the controller have basic functions outside steam. But then we're gonna get people complaining that their gyro isn't working outside of Steam.Best thing to do in this case is just cuck Windows users to be completely and fully honest here
>>738933956It's not just that, if Valve used the generic gamepad driver on Windows the controller would be unable to use trackpads in Windows which would be a complete deal breaker for most people since Windows with a gamepad is literally unusuable (none of the control inputs do anything).
>>738934085Could be enabled as a mouse though, couldn't it?I have a chink gamepad right here (mobapad huben 2) that works on xinput mode but also adds keyboard and mouse devices to bind keys to the back buttons.
>>738933956You can switch the Steam controller to a basic mode by just holding down the start button which makes it useable in programs outside of Steam, but you need Steam running and you are giving up all the extra features of the Steam controller.
>>738934194I think that would require the controller to actually be an USB hub with several devices connected to it. I'm not sure how you'd make that work exactly.Yes, it's certainly possible.
the touchpads should have been on the back and instead of back buttons it should have been two additional face buttons
>>738934370If Mobapad can figure it out surely Valve canNot that I'm saying they're doing a good job though, I have to add some weird fucking rules and fixes on linux to make it work because of this fucking quirk, and their 1000hz over dongle somehow are less responsive than the steam controller "oh so laggy an unusable 250hz", I'm never listening to polling rate obsessed neckbeards again
>>738934262>you need Steam runningThat's the main issue some people have that's solved on linux (with software that supports SDL)
>>738929437>As an input device it still has no native recognition when Steam isn't involved.SISR gives you a fake 360 pad you can map it to. If you can get away with M&K you don't even need that.
>>738934447So, the Vita? That shit sucked ass. There are already too many buttons on the front, although we could've had more menu buttons.
>>738934524It's not really a matter of figuring it out, it's more of a matter of wanting to make the design compromises and introducing complexity to make it work. I don't think there's any reason whatsoever for Valve to do it. They would get no benefit from doing this.
>>738929437Now that the sdl code exists writing a userspace driver for it would be llm-tier trivial. Might end up doing it because I think the steam input ux sucks and I’d rather just be editing a text file.
>>738934770>They would get no benefit from doing this.Don't get me wrong, I completely agree, but all I'm hearing from retards is "they're not appealing to the majority of the userbase by not supporting that"
>>738934920>I think the steam input ux sucksIt's not terrible. The quick settings don't work, though, making remapping your back buttons quickly tedious.
>>738927338cheeto dust absorbers
>>738935083They can keep saying that, but they'll still be wrong no matter how many times they repeat it. The target audience was never the "majority of the userbase". I don't think it's a stretch to say that Valve never intended console users to use their controller, or mobile users, or non-Steam users in general.
>>738935134It’s running into the limits of the checkboxes sliders submenus paradigm. It’s certainly more discoverable than a configuration language, but I’m the kind of weirdo who wants to just read a manual and be done with it.
>>738935441Fair, there's a lot of basic annoyances like not being able to just set a default setting for all trackpad mice. I know what sensitivity I want, I know how much acceleration I want, why do I have to set it up every fucking time or make endless templates for every style of game?
>>738927220Cool, I wonder if/how they handle customization though. It would be a huge hassle for every developer to need to implement all the functions themselves, not to mention a big annoyance for players. A good thing overall though, needless to say.
>>738935851Generally you just map to a base gamepad. There are a lot of annoyances. I wanted to play Pragmata with mouse aiming, you can't do that because you can't use KB&M and controller at the same time, so I'd either have to remap everything to keyboard and give up on shit like analog movement, or just play in controller mode. Using the trackpads in joystick emulation mode is terrible compared to mouse mode, so I just played with the joysticks.Ideally the game would properly support the controllers, which you can see in something like HL2 which lets you map directly to in-game actions instead of an emulated gamepad, and use action sets that automatically change depending on state (like when driving), but that requires devs to actually expose those commands to users. Maybe things will improve in the future now there's a big controller with mouse+controller as the default.
>>738937605There's a layout for pragmata that uses the trackpad appropriately and uses gyro as mouse that works quite well honestly.Ideally games would support both inputs at the same time but unfortunately that needs to be modded on a game by game basis and there's fuck all that can be done about that, just make devs more conscious about it and less retarded I guess
Anyone got their emails yet?
