Just let it keep being playable by releasing the server files after the official ones are shut shut down. No refund needed if you can host your own server.

I just played Thief gold, and had a grand time. There are less people playing that than were playing Highguard when it was shut down.

Are you seriously saying it's a permissible business practice to remotely brick people's copies of Thief gold to force them to buy Th4f? They literally did that with The Crew, and The Crew 2 retard.

based. i don't care and you wanna know why?
because this means game developers will try to do all they can to avoid adding online features to games that don't need them.
any online games will be the based old school kind where anyone is able to set up a server and they will be designed from the ground up in such a way that the developer can completely drop support and players will still be able to run it.
it's all a matter of designing games to support continued playability. yeah, that means certain kinds of slop games may go extinct, but i never played them so i don't care.

Libertarians live on a fantasy land delusion where the government doing anything is going to lead to 1984, where if you just “pull yourself from the bootstraps” you’ll become the CEO of a fortune 500 company, and that the people will just “vote with their wallets” of a company does morally wrong thing.
This is despite historical and even modern things proving that companies would in fact use child labor to sell you a lamp that is designed to break after warranty is up, and that vwyw doesn’t work.
There is overwhelming evidence to show that companies do in fact need regulations. But half of them have monetary incentive to be against government intervention, while the other half are stupid and too stubborn to admit they are wrong.
The best thing you can do is constantly make fun of them.

It's actually very common for everyone who isn't a AAA publisher trying to sell The Crew 2 by shutting down The Crew. From looking at Steam's New Releases Only Up: Chan Chained Together which was released today does not depend on a central server, like basically every game.

abiotic came out last year, multiple others within just the past few years, although many more are much older
this is just my own library, I'm sure if you looked on steam you could find more
there isn't any specific tag for dedicated servers, but in the section on the store page with a list going 'single player, online co-op, steam achievements, etc.' some games will have 'LAN co-op' and that's close enough to get an idea of whether or not they'll have it
I really think store pages should tell you whether or not a game comes with a dedicated server tool, it'd be useful information

Yes.
By law all cars manufactured after 2022 have to have telemetry transmitting data back to the manufacturer and law enforcement.
By law all cars manufacturer after 2026 have to have driver monitors that will automatically shut the car off if the car's AI believes the driver to be intoxicated or otherwise impaired.
You voted for this when you approved of the "infrastructure" bill to fix your collapsing bridges and pothole filled roads.

The government is involved anyway. Why can't you make a private server for games you want to play right now? Why can't you mod always online games to be playable offline? Because corporations have convinced the government to fine you, or jail you, or ultimately shoot you if you try.
Corporate shills are happy to play libertarian when the government is actually helping people, but the moment someone tries to weaken copyright or give actual ownership of products to the individual that buys them suddenly it is absolutely critical that the government step in, this dangerous anarchy cannot be allowed to continue.

Murder, rape, assault, arson, all free reign for anyone else.
Their employers having 0 obligations to pay them at all if they don’t feel like it.
When they go into a grocery store, there will be a special “libertarian” section where companies can sell you anything that’s normally illegal, and the store itself can do fuckass shit like changing the prices of items or require them to watch an ad to use the fire escape.

nta, but im a fan of making things accessible and open to the public. Similar to copyright or trademarks expiring so anyone can use the work, or a drug patent expiring so others can make it.

if a game developer no longer wants to support a product's online functionality, make it open source. This should be the way for all human creations, so all knowledge can be shared, learned, and advanced. Not thrown in a box, lost, and destroyed.

>>
>>738942134
>when the game dies out eventually, as all games do
i dont know man, i can still play 40 years of games
this idea that games "die" when the developers stop supporting them is literall a new thing, something that has been going on for barely 10 years or less, and even then, most games developed during this era where games "die" aren't games that do die
so no, not all games die, and in fact the absurdly vast majority of them does not die at all
so yes, when you buy a game, you buy it with the correct expectation that you will retain the product you bought even after the developer stops supporting it.

also, learn to read, i said "i'll be able to play it at least FOR A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME", and "if the game shuts down after a week"
if i buy a 40 dollars game, and i have my plenty of time with it, with the game shutting down 5 years after i bought it cause a new version came out or cause the playerbase naturally faded until there weren't enough players to justify the costs of keeping the servers up, then no, i don't want my money back, i got my value out of the game, plenty of it.
but if i buy a 40 dollars game and it's shut down 1-2 WEEKS after i bought it cause there was no enough players, then yes, i do want my fucking money back, cause one of the promises was that if i buy that product i'll be able to play it against other players, with new maps incoming, new modes, etc, all of which won't happen cause it's being shut down in 1-2 weeks, and that is the literaly definition of scam, so yes, i absolutely want my money back, and yes, i deserve it.
>>
>>738947540

>The only reason its passing is california lawmakers
The only reason it's passing is because corrupt californian lawmakers (not unique to california obviously) know the further this progresses the bigger their bribes to shut it down will be.

Gaming is one of the biggest industries on the planet, it will pay fucking handsomely for this to not happen, but they need to make the threat, very, very real. There are so many examples of this shit.

I'd love to see some actual pro consumer shit happen, but I guarantee this is just lawyers and judges shaking down the gaming industry for their own benefit, not that of the consumers.

That shit doesn’t work. Even if a game flops, the company still has the data of people who bought it and the investors who want Always Online Games to succeed.
And that’s assuming the vast majority of peope coordinate to not buy a single always online game, something company can just sneak into a game without telling you, and can collaborate with social media companies to take down users criticizing/exposing their game.
That’s why there is no such thing as a “free” market or freedom in general. It’s either regulated through laws, or regulated through money rich and powerful people pass around each other to make sure they get richer.
