That used to be common when you had nothing else to play or you considered a game your GOAT. Same applies for score. Routes add replayability but instead the game should've defaulted to a difficulty closer to something like Afterburner Climax.

There's zero reason why you couldn't take the 7-9h campaign with an upgrade shop, branching paths and save system and bolt it onto SF. At the end of the day SF64 wasn't very innovative, it basically copied old 16 bit rail shooters without the difficulty which made it easy and short. It was made for kids with no shooter experience so it makes sense.
