The old icon sucked. Especially in context. Clearly the 3 spirit items are conveying the idea of growth of power in your hand. The first one holding a spirit pinch, the second a small flame in your hand, and now the third with an endless amount. Left shows you being overwhelmed by it, right shows you in control which is the correct idea on display.

This is actually fantastic worldbuilding because it tells you that Paldea is a nation where 1) people travel on a vehicle-like Pokemon more and 2) plays into the open world nature of the game.

Note how we already know that the new region does not use the same design but still uses open air Pokemon centres that look different to retain the ease of access while still being true to the new region.

To be fair that makes more sense with how the interior is designed. It needs to be huge and mostly intact for any of the gameplay stuff to work in a more realistic setting. If you popped out of the top of it and it looked like a plastic toy minichurch it'd just be jarring.

Yeah the design of the area doesn't feel very livable, though Aerith says no one lives there "anymore" so maybe it used to be more livable at some point. Not sure why people would move out when there's a magic church with flowers right there, though.

Yeah, that's part of the newer lore. They actually tried to build a proper "lower city" and "upper city", but the lower city got overrun by gangs and shit and it was easier for Shinra to maintain the upper city while letting people like Corneo have the run of the lower city.

Doesn't really bother me. Midgar's surroundings and the undercity's geography being more desert-y has been a thing since Advent Children.

This remaster makes me mad beyond belief. It's completely wasted effort. The original Spyro trilogy is already good, why not remake something like Enter the Dragonfly? The main reason that one sucks is that it was a borderline beta build rushed out for a Christmas release the year it came out. Game actually could have been good with some polish and removal of the abysmal loading times that plagued the original.
