I know it’s petty but Isshin is only a decimal off from being the best final boss ever, and it’s only because I wish Wolf decapitated him for the finisher. He could’ve still talked after getting decapitated since that’s a common thing in Japanese media anyway.

Gehrman is anti-climactic. He fucks off for 90% of the playthrough then you progress through the game and all of a sudden he's the final boss. Isshin has way better build up, but when it comes to aesthetics and presentation, Gehrman shits on Isshin hardcore especially considering Isshin's arena is a rehash of Gehrman's. But then again Isshin is much better when it comes to gameplay. I prefer Isshin slightly.

Gehrman's lore and involvement in the story is very much in the background. some mumbling while he is sleeping, finding the old workshop. but in the overall lore he has no small role.
Isshin is just a more polished version of that. old mentor like figure that remains mostly remains in the background throughout the story, but this time his involvement spelled out more explicitly.

I couldn't really appreciate Gehrman because I fought him once, nuked him and then was like "that's it?"
I even parried attacks of his that I saw for the first time

1. he is magically bound by the mortal blade to do it, or
2. he does it out of respect for genichiro's sacrifice
to me, it seems like a mix of both. anyway it seems like to revive ashina, they would require kuro's magic, which isshin who when he was alive ignored as he rather accepted ashina's end.

Is it weird that I 99% completed this game twice and literally never even fought isshin? Both times I played through i was so burnt out by the end that I just didnt have the energy to make more than an attempt or two on the beast of rage or w/e right before the ending. Then I step away to play something else for a month or two and lose all of my muscle memory and feel like I need to start over from the beginning again.

Their storytelling style wore off for me too. Mysteries are only fun when they have cool answers. Open ended questions that will never be revisited are gay and a waste of time. Id rather they just tell an actual full story without any dangling threads that their constant vagueposting that requires extensive item description knowledge and problem solving just to wind up at an answer that's more like a wet fart than anything satisfying.

You kill the nightmare everyone think its causing the hunt, Gehrman gives you the choice to die, wake up and walk away from this cursed land, or you can fight him and maybe have the chance to kill the eldritch abomination thats actually causing the hunts. Idk, seeing the wheel-chaired fuck get up and fight you its pretty kino, and it makes sense your character wants to get out and forget all the horrors. Both options are great.
