I don't really understand this game

What game? You should pick up all that wood for sure.
>>
>>738947497
What's there to understand? Build your kingdom and kill your enemy to death.
>>
Play an easier to understand rts like starcraft brood war
>>
>>738947497
you need to learn the autistic build and cap order or else you're automatically behind by week 2 and can no longer win.

Heroes of Might and Magic: Golden Era

What buildings do I even pick in the city? Do I have to get a hero to the city to pick up the people? Why can't I march them out and merge with the hero? Feels like I am just running a hero back and forth from objectives to the city for reinforcements.

I think the tutorial needs to be better. It treats you like a retard but doesn't really explain this part. It just says "You can upgrade buildings btw off you go" which is weird considering the rest of the tutorial is like "The right mouse button is the button on your mouse to the right. When you click it, it will send a signal to your PC to be converted into game inputs".

>What buildings do I even pick in the city?
Depends of the map. Usually it's a good idea to balance the income buildings with some significant early dwellings and upgrades, like getting shooters or upgrading them to double shot, or some units with parry or double-strike.
>Do I have to get a hero to the city to pick up the people?
Not necessarily, there's a certain spell you can get from a skill that allows you to teleport reinforcements from the city.
>Why can't I march them out and merge with the hero?
Because the game is called Heroes, not Automated Supply Lines.
>Feels like I am just running a hero back and forth from objectives to the city for reinforcements.
Well, that's what you should do early on while you gather enough troops to sustain yourself, and about that time you probably should have enough astrology points to learn the town portal spell.

Try doing the challenges, they're more about in-depth mechanics like proper combat, spell usage, movement, etc.

I am a gray haired old man who has lived through all the HoMM and MM games and I still don't understand why people like the HoMM games. MM, especially old ones, love that shit. But as soon as Ho gets involved I just don't know. They've never really clicked
>>
>>738950429
Vice versa for me. Love HoMM, could never understand the appeal of M&M. They're just too antiquated to enjoy.
>>
How do I got gud at HoMM 3? It feels as though a single mistake can cost the entire game. I've much preferred HoMM 5 as a result, it's way more forgiving.
I always seem to fall behind with the first camps I fight while my opponents seem to snowball.

Learn to manage combat better to deal with harder fights early on.
>>
>>738947497
Haven't played this, but in 3 the archery unit is generally always what you want to build first since it helps clear the map more quickly. Also, creature generators are better than getting stuff in your town.
>>
>>738947497
pick all the shit you see and build monsters from your castle
>>
>>738951440
Archery units + magic for clears, should be able to do most of the roaming creatures without taking any losses. Be careful with stacks of archery units though since those can actually fight back.
>>738948608
>Do I have to get a hero to the city to pick up the people?
Not just for that, but having multiple heroes and thus maximizing movement for clearing the map is a good idea in general.
>>
>try playing game
>struggle to break out on week 3
>watch guy with funny accent play
>he is effortlessly breaking on week 2 and clearing black towers with his week 1 army
wtf I don't understand how they're doing it even though I'm watching them do it
>>
>>738956317
Well you said you "watch guy with funny accent play". Pay attention to what he does. It's a pretty straightforward game, you can learn to do the same from replays and commentary.
>>
>>738956554
yeah but it's hard to tell exactly what he's doing different.
>>
>>738957579
Post an example. I don't know this game, but I've played 3 a whole lot so I can probably help you analyze what's going on.

he gets angels on week 1 and then completely steamrolls the map
>>
>>738958636

Yeah, this is basically the same as how you'd approach HoMM3 playing any faction but Necropolis. Pick archers, protect with single stacks and wait for the enemy to come to you, killing the highest speed enemies as your top priority, then replacing his T1 cannon fodder using generators. He takes some pretty heavy losses to capture the angel generator, but that kind of things is usually worth it. There's some things he's doing here that wouldn't be optimal in 3 like picking experience over gold on chests and only using a single, but there might be some meta changes that I'm unaware of causing this.
