What is THE best WAD?
>>738948154I have many hours in doom, but mostly just replaying doom 1 and 2 over again with different gameplay mods. I'm a big fan of DTWID and D2TWID.

>>738948154I don't know. All my suggestions are apparently gzdoom based games which don't count or something. So is a wad JUST a mappack or is it allowed to change other things as well? Or does changing more then a custom map make it a total conversion assuming that's still a phrase that's used.

the undisputed GOAT, along with Afterglowthough high noon drifter is a personal favorite and pirate doom will always occupy a special place in my heart
>>738949483They are most commonly used to reference map packs. Now I don't know where the line between a map pack and total conversion lies if you only change textures and don't change the gameplay but gzdoom-based games are definitely in the total conversion category
>>738949483WAD is specifically the file format so you could argue anything that requires a pk3 is discounted. But modern WADs often incorporate patches and such to do simple enemy replacements. Theres also a bunch of mapping formats supported by the usual engines that while in the spirit of doom, greatly increase what you can do with it even just using regular wad files.Theres also GZDOOM maps that just use the engine for nonuclidian shit or for the scripting or even just to support certain soundfiles but are otherwise vanilla doom.So at the end of the day it's probably down more to the spirit of things. Personally I don't like having to fiddle with ZDOOM settings and binds and shit all the time so I stick to whatever runs on prBoom style sourceports.
