i've been asking myself that same question the last few days.
would Eve online count? I typically don't play these complex strategy games like OP's pic but I'm so bored of reaction speed gaming that I'm gonna start getting into them.

Only multiplayer games can be considered complex, Eve Online perhaps being the most complex.

GG's attention to minuscule detail extended to encompass resource acquisition, war production management, land, and naval warfare all in one, as opposed to WitE's sole focus on moving your counters to smash the enemy's ones. Although the former two are a much bigger factor on the Japanese side than the American (as they should be). As Japan, you've gotta run the naval war against the US, the land war against China and in SEA, make sure you've got oil coming in from the latter, and so on. It's even more logistics-pilled than WitE and WitW. There's an optional campaign that "turns off" the Chinese theater, though. Turns are also 1 per day IIRC, as opposed to WitE's one per week. That makes for a significantly longer campaign.

I faintly recall reading on the forums that unlike WitE, which was given a sequel, WitP:AE could not be remade again because its sheer complexity was the product of multiple irreplaceable devs who are no longer around.

kind of yeah. it's not so much the devs and their skillset so much as their encyclopedic knowledge of the war, weapons, ships, aircraft, etc. a lot of knowledge has been lost and it'd be almost impossible to find a teach with the skill and knowledge today.

Gary Grigbsy also said he would never make War in the Pacific again and that he was crazy/insane to make it in the first place. If he did it again, he'd make it simpler. We will most likely never see a newer WitP:AE game. It's all we got. 100 years from now, if you want to play the best game there is for the war in the Pacific, you'll have to boot up ye old Windows in an emulator to play it.

I love reading AARs but the fact it might actually take upwards of 5 years just to reach 1944 is one hell of a commitment. The fact it's even got scenario mods to add even more ship types and units is just insane.
