When you get up into the high 8s, you're leaving the realm of "this game is good for fans of the genre" and entering the realm of "this is a strong candidate to become an all-time classic". It's ludicrous to put this into the same arena as Diablo 2, Witcher 3, Ocarina of Time, Resident Evil 4, etc. And IGN didn't just do that. They put Mixtape ABOVE those games. It shows that they're fundamentally worthless as a resource for people who like videogames and are a detriment to the hobby in that they pressure studios to do things that the actual customers don't want.

The fact that this isn't a gameplay-focused videogame should automatically disqualify it from getting anything above a low 8 (genre classic territory). Whether it even deserves that is a different discussion.

Now they make up all sorts of excuses for their importance in the industry. As if we were not better off just letting games release and allowing word of mouth to determine what was good or what was shit and that made an easier choice for whether you spent money or not. These people believe that without them there would be no gaming industry at all which is beyond delusional.
The older publications/magazines evolved into much far worse more pompous assholes from the magazine days. Back then even some journalists were suspected of being bought off. But if there were allegations of such a thing they wouldn't have coordinated gamers are dead articles in their magazines after they were found out to be corrupt. Most of those people would just leave the publication and never come back.
Gaming journalism does need to die to correct the wrongs of whatever the fuck happening during that saga. Considering there was a lot of people involved in GG i can't say i agreed with them on every issue. It's just that i was tired of gaming websites myself prior to GG. I essentially still don't think it's a real career and you're invading on a space that is a hobby. It's not a career. I will state that as fact and not opinion.

there should be some standards when giving scores, we all know what 10 represents. I've played thousands of games, a perfect 10 can only be a genre-defining or once-in-a-generation experience. with the passage of time some stuff I deemed worthy of being a 10 later became a 9 because the studio made better games (sekiro vs dark souls for example), some stuff I reevaluated to be better later on than I initially thought, like with mgs2. mixtape brings nothing new to the walking sim space and is a disgrace to the actual medium of video games with actual game design and gameplay. gone homo and life is strange already perfected this niche subgenre. even if you really liked the song selection, it realistically can't be higher than 8/10 unless you're pushing some agenda or think your shitty individual opinion is more important than the last 40 years of video games.

I have no desire to play either of those games. While I hate what Mixtape represents, but I also see no value whatsoever in Subnautica 2 and I don't understand why retards want journos to treat it like a gaming treasure just because steam users want to play it.
Seeing those two games getting any level of traction makes me lose even more hope in the future of gaming.

Yeah the standard is called metacritic or open critic. Mixtape isnt even the highest rated game of the year, it's in the middle of the pack in the 80s. What's wrong with a few people really liking the game? In the end just because there's a handful of publications that gave it a high score doesnt mean anything when it balances out when more people review a game.
