There were no 486 CPU clocked at 40MHz. Very first ones have 25MHz clock, followed by 33MHz and later by 50 MHz.

>>738955026
IIRC the turbo was there because some older games using the CPU clock would run at unplayable light speed if they were being fed through a faster one, so it was there to artificially slow the CPU down so you could still play them.

Why they called this function turbo instead of slow-mo or compatibility mode or something I dunno, marketing I guess.
>>
>>738956583
Sort of like how games that use CPU without frame limiting jump up to huge numbers with modern hardware? (Touhou games from Zun for example if not from Steam.) They thought faster = better but for some games lower FPS/Refresh Rate is better. (2D Arcade games, bullet hells etc are better on 30-40ish fps, readable screens, 60fps is unplayable, 20fps will make it stutter too much.)
>>
>>738955934
>DX2
See >>738955026. It's showing a machine build around this exact CPU. Original clock speed was 20MHz, which when 'turbo'd goes into 66MHz,thanks to extra 16kB of cache with enabled 'writeback' function. 486 CPU with real 40MHz clock were rare and never ofically issued for the market of home PC's, They were used, but only in some embedded machines for industry

>>

>>
>>738957034
I fully admit I'm retarded, I have a probably unreasonable fear that putting a (comparatively modern) CPU to replace my 2700 would make my computer doodoo its farts, even if I feel like that'd be a good cheap replacement.
That and replacing my rx 5700 with something more modern
Even if admittedly the only modern game I see myself fucking around with in the near future is Half Life X if it has dev tools (for linux users)
>>
>>738956805
Turbo is the real clock speed. They didn't overclock to double their frequencies. They underclocked to half for compatibility (since some shit would run too fast at higher clock speeds). A 66 downclocks to 33. What that video is showing isn't true.
>>
>>738957238
just get a mid-range portable PC if you only care about old dated games and install linux on it.
>>
>>738957238
Only the early AM4 mobos have trouble running 5000s simply because the BIOS size started to get too big from adding too many gens.

I'm pretty sure the 7600 (or some kind of equivalent) is better than the 5700, but hey if I'm wrong I don't have to buy a new gpu.

I actually have one of these. It's a DX2 50MHz, some cirrus logic vga, and an SB Pro. Added an old CD drive I had. The only real problem is the 300MB hard drive, and it has no physical space for a second drive.

I used to play Wolf3d, Dune 1 (the music on this is INSANE good even by modern standards), Heroes of Might & Magic 2, Volfied, Pinball Fantasies, Raptor Call of the Shadows, Mortal Kombat 1-2-3. I think I tried Red Alert 1 but it was too choppy.
Doom runs too choppy on this so I wouldn't even try that.

Nowadays I'd just use x86box, it's finally accurate enough with all the ones I listed above, even the music in Dune. Dosbox fucking sucks.
>>
>>738954542
40MHz means it's a 386 chip.
So for Arcade games you could Major Stryker, Commander Keen, Wacky Wheels, Secret Agent, Crystal Caves.
Puzzle games like Millebornes, Sherlock Zen, Canasta.
You could also boot Windows 3.1 and play games like Klotski, Kye, Solitaire.

My childhood computer was a Macintosh with a 33mhz CPU and 8MB of RAM

And of course being a dumb kid I went for whatever I could run that was newest and fanciest at the time, so I successfully played

>Warcraft 2
>Civ2
>Alone in the Dark (real polygons!)

And of course the less demanding Lemmings, Oregon Trail, SimCity, etc.

It's because PCs started with "the IBM PC standard" which called for a 20mhz 386 processor and DOS with no true multitasking, a program would take over the whole machine like a console and use all of its resources exclusively. And for a while PC software developers didn't consider the possibility that anything would change ever, and tied the framerate of the game directly to the CPU clock.
