>He goes to local 'computer repair' shops for repairs.

Seriously though, who actually goes to these? Also, if you allow your parents to visit/pay them, you're a piece of shit.
>>
Video games?

they don't really give a shit unless you're a hot chick
t. worked at a friends computer shop for 2 years (most of the time it was old people with hard drive failures or cases filled with so much dust the thing wouldn't even turn on)
>>
>>738965510
Bet you didn't know computers could play those

Yes little Jimmy, computers helped make video games.

I remember when my first shitty poor people Emachine computer broke when I was a kid, the disk drive failed. We took it to the local PC repair place in town, ran by a huge fat guy with literal stacks of old trash computers sitting in it. It took him 3 months to change the disk drive and it looked all fucked up and uneven. We were too poor to throw that chinese walmart dogshit out and get a new one.

12 years ago or so my moms computer got hit with some really bad ransomware. It was around the time malware like that was really getting big, so there were tons of variants and there wasn't some all-in-one decryptor you could download to save your files or Windows install.
My dad ended up taking it to local computer repair store in my town, and all they did was reinstall Windows AND installed one of those fake antiviruses that don't actually do anything and beg for you to purchase a license to fix "driver" isseus.
To this day I don't know why they did that.
>>
I took my PC into one of those sorts of places once because I didn't have a spare power supply at the time and I needed to confirm that it was my power supply that died on me.
>>
>>738965473
I went to one when my first PC build did not work. Turned out the GPU was dead from the factory and it worked if it was unplugged so I got a replacement. Never would have figured that out on my own. Also I had screwed my MB in with the wrong screws, he swapped those out.
>>
>>738965610
post one thing you don't want people to look at
>>
>>738965553
But assembling and swapping out parts on your computer is significantly simpler and more streamlined than, say, changing the oil on your car.
People who spend 8+ hours a day at their keyboard have no excuse for not knowing the ins and outs of their machine

I went into one once just to get a simple DVI connector because I didn't want to wait 2 days. Something that while "out of date" was still needed for an older monitor I liked and the fucker charged me $20 for some old ass replastic wrapped used cable, I was so pissed. I never went to one again and just deal with ebay/amazon now.

Since I saw this, I've always been caution about just trusting anyone with PC repairs.

>Unplug PC from inside
>$70 to just look inside
>Say it's a drive
>"You're gonna need a new PC, we can help with that."

I would sooner trust sending someone to one of these than the flunkies at Geek Squad who will charge you $170 for a diagnostic

I remember using that font on AIM decades ago to feel like a cool hackerman.

I do, where else would I go for repairs?

My computers generally have a lifespan of 5 - 10 years. If one of them breaks I'll just buy a new one lmao. Trying to diagnose non-obvious issue is just too much of a hassle for me to be honest.

I haven't seen a PC repair shop in like 20 years. the only similar store that still exists around here are phone repair and retro consoles that they bought off eBay and marked up 400%.

Went to one 5 years ago. Bro dropped his laptop and hinge broke. Let me have it if i repair it. Repair was beyond my skill. Was $200 to fix. Was worth it for a cheap modern laptop. Got me thru college

most faggots are phoneposters nowadays, so I'm not surprised

Are you joking? Tech illiteracy has regressed exponentially since the latter half of the 10s.

I have a family member who works in one. They charge fair prices. You have to understand there is an entire segment of the population, I'd say the majority, that just want things to work. They don't care how they work, they only care that they do. This is everything from cars to computers to phones. They don't want to learn how to put them together. They don't want to learn how to diagnose what's wrong with them. They simply don't want to spend the time. So they're rather drop their rig/laptop off at a place and have them deal with it. Its not a huge thing. They drop them off and they get repaired. Half the time it is something simple they could have googled or watched a couple videos on youtube to figure out. But they've got kids they need to drop off at soccer practice. They need to go over to their parents house and see to them. They've got shopping to do and other places to go

Its not that they're stupid, the intricacies of computers simply aren't important or interesting to them

Try going on the /poeg/ on /vg/. Even discussing a build is impossible there.

People who aren't computer hardware nerds or know a computer hardware nerd.
The same reason if you're a car nerd you don't use mechanics. Plenty of people don't know a computer nerd. And if you are a computer nerd, honestly, charge everyone else for your services, if they're not your mother then fuck 'em. Don't be that guy with the truck who's getting called over to cart some bullshit every other weekend because everyone's too cheap to rent a uhaul.

I went to one like 25 years ago for my laptop because it was cheaper to have them do it than buying a separate external 3.5" drive to reinstall what I think was some version of Windows 98.
my gaming was mostly limited to shit like emulators and some stuff like Warcraft I and II on it but I used it for that and porn quite a bit. Was some sort of IBM Thinkpad 385 though I forget the exact model. Got a great price on it on eBay as a kid back when they used to not have any sort of age verification stuff.

Where in NZ? Nice country but too many cooked methmen up norf and you guys need to sort your housing/homelessness shit out.
>>
>>738965473
>Also, if you allow your parents to visit/pay them
I don't, but I wish I did because every holiday and family get together is "Oh, hey, wow, anon, long time no see. So anyway I brought 5 laptops and 10 phones if you could sit in the corner by yourself and get them all working for me that'd be great"
>>
>>738966301
>To this day I don't know why they did that
Affilate sales, same as the tracking Amazon links. Cmon anon that's obvious

Auckland.
Its a very peaceful country. It actually still confuses me to this day why there are so many homeless drug addicts in NZ. Theres basically no reason to live in that level of poverty.
I am on below minimum wage weekly income after quitting my job. And I still have enough to buy healthy food, pay rent, and buy nice things like new hardware and games a few times a year without going negative.

>endless doomsissy posting

>genuine poe2 shilling when that game flops out like 3 weeks in
I've found that /poeg/ is sort of just useless at this point. Most of /vg/ could get nuked outside of a couple of generals and no one would notice. I did like them exposing GGG as running the RMT shops though, that one was fun. Or how most currency trading is done by dudes multiboxing, doing full clears and having scripted bots just pick up the gumball currency, dumping the remains on a trader.

For a good long time, you could run a map hack to see what rewards you'd get from Lab and Legion, back when people gave a shit.

It really is a cespit.
Cant even post a pob anymore. 0 discussion whatsoever.
then again the entire internet is heading in this direction.
