Evercold feels like a panic-induced course correction from what we've seen. The EW patch series was bad on its own, but then DT doubled down and ~4 years of shit story has made them go back to "what works." Scions are together again even if we absolutely should have properly split up after EW and had new characters (still showing up occasionally but never more than 1-2 at a time), and there's some new and immediate world ending threat out of nowhere. It doesn't feel natural, nor really doing what was supposed to be the start of a new story saga. The planet initiating a mass-rejoining just feels like the aftermath of the Zodiark plotline like we never really got over it. I get wanting to focus on the shards and stuff, but the reasons for doing so should have been completely different. Perhaps even more in-line with ShB where they're just self-contained plotlines for the most part. You can tell the backlash over how bad DT was handled (should have literally just been a low-stakes vacation expansion, seriously) means they're afraid to ever touch Meracydia now that they completely fucked up the New World. Shards are "safe" in comparison, I guess.
