From my experience you either are basically pre-hardwired to go for it or you'd not.I was a normal guy in high school and never really cared either way about anime, had friends in the anime club and always passed up invites to it, only very lightly geeky normal friends who wanted me to watch Akira and such and I still didn't go for that. But years later when Lucky Star came out and some chain of events of me searching led me to watch it, out of a morbid curiosity of some guy on a WoW forum having a gif of the OP dance as his profile pic and me being fascinated with its smoothness and cuteness? I got utterly hooked with 0 resistance. I was alarmed, had to lock the door and triple check to make sure nobody could ever see me watching it and was so confused at reality as I a sat there both embarrassed blushing like a fag that I was doing this, but also delighted in some way I never even conceived of. It was a discovery of an entire emotion, a type of media the West doesn't make at all and felt like seeing a brand new fucking color. So tl;dr in cases like me you are hardwired to get it instantly, were your whole fucking life, and just don't know if yet if you hadn't earnestly tried. or I guess you just aren't and can't even if you wanted to see what the fuss is about, like OP.
